If The Sims 4 will not open from the EA app, the cause could be damaged game files, an app-cache problem, the EA in-game overlay, incompatible mods, or a PC or Mac that does not meet the game’s current requirements. The right first step depends on what is failing: the EA app itself, the game after you select Play, or a game that starts and then crashes. Work through the matching checks below; none identifies a universal cause.
First, identify what is not opening
Before changing files, note whether the EA app opens, what happens after you select Play, and whether an error message or splash screen appears. Also record whether you use Windows or Mac, whether the game or app updated recently, and whether you have mods or custom content installed. These details help distinguish an app problem from a game launch failure or a crash after startup.

If the EA app opens but The Sims 4 will not launch
Repair the game files
In the EA app, open Library, find The Sims 4, select the game tile’s three-dot menu, and choose Repair. Let the process finish, then try launching the game again. EA lists repair as an initial step when an EA app game does not load. EA says the in-game overlay can sometimes contribute to crashes and recommends disabling it when a game will not start. Turn it off temporarily, retry The Sims 4, and restore the setting if it makes no difference. The overlay guidance is part of EA’s PC, PlayStation, and Xbox crashing or freezing troubleshooting; this check applies to PC.

If the EA app itself will not open
Windows 10 and Windows 11
Open Start > All Apps > EA > App Recovery, then select Clear Cache. This route does not require the EA app to open. EA notes that clearing the cache cannot resolve a game or server outage, so check again later if the problem appears to affect EA services broadly. See EA’s cache-clearing instructions.
Mac
EA’s cache instructions for Mac use Help > App Recovery inside the EA app. Because this method presumes the app opens, it will not help if the app itself cannot be launched. EA’s page does not provide the same Start-menu route for Mac.

Test whether mods or custom content are involved
EA states that mods can cause problems or conflicts with The Sims 4, and game updates can make mods that previously worked incompatible. If you use mods or custom content, test a launch with the Mods folder moved out of the game folder rather than deleting its contents. If the game opens, the issue is likely connected to one or more removed files, but this test does not identify which one.
- Move the Mods folder to a temporary location outside the game folder.
- Launch The Sims 4 and check whether it starts.
- If it does, restore mods in small batches, testing after each batch.
- When a batch brings the problem back, split that batch into smaller groups and repeat until you isolate the file or files involved.

Check your computer against EA’s current requirements
Compare your operating system, memory, free storage, and graphics hardware with EA’s live The Sims 4 system requirements. EA’s listed minimums at the time its page was retrieved include:

EA’s page also lists a DVD-ROM drive for installing from a physical disc. That requirement is limited to disc installation; it does not mean a disc drive or physical copy will fix a launch failure in the EA app. Requirements can change, so use EA’s current page for the latest specifications. Do not assume you need new hardware unless you have confirmed a specific requirement your computer does not meet.

If it still crashes or fails to start
After repairing files and testing relevant app, overlay, and mod checks, EA’s broader troubleshooting includes closing background apps, trying a clean boot, or reinstalling the game and EA app. Reinstalling is one option for a persistent problem, not a step that must come before repair or mod isolation. If you contact EA support, include your platform, the exact error or observed behavior, whether the app opens, recent update history, whether mods are installed, and which steps you have tried. That information helps support narrow down the issue without assuming a cause.
