If shift-click does nothing or the hidden cheat options never appear, the most likely cause is that testing cheats are not enabled, or that the input does not match your platform. On PC or Mac, enable testing cheats in the cheat console and hold the physical Shift key while clicking. On console, there is no keyboard Shift key, so you use a controller combination instead. Work through the checks below in order, because the first two cover most cases.
What shift-click does in The Sims 4
Holding Shift while clicking a Sim or object opens a set of cheat interactions that are not in the normal right-click menu. Electronic Arts’ own cheats FAQ describes shift-click as one of the cheat actions that depends on testing cheats being active. That means a missing option is usually a setup problem, not a broken click. The available options also vary by target and by what the game is doing at that moment, so a single missing item does not on its own show that shift-click has stopped working.
Step 1: Enable testing cheats on PC or Mac
This is the main prerequisite to check first.
- Press Ctrl+Shift+C to open the cheat console. If nothing appears, confirm you are pressing the combination shown for your operating system and that no other program has captured the shortcut.
- Type
testingcheats trueand press Enter. - Close the console, then hold the physical Shift key and click the Sim or object.
If the cheat console opens but the command produces no effect, check that you typed it exactly as shown, with no capital letters or extra spaces.
Step 2: Use the controller equivalent on console
On console, the keyboard Shift key does not exist, so the documented method is a controller combination that EA describes in its cheats FAQ:

EA’s FAQ names PS4 and Xbox One when it gives these controls. If you play on a newer console, check EA’s current console controls guide to confirm the mapping for your edition before assuming it matches.
Warning before you enable cheats on console
On console, enabling testing cheats disables trophies or achievements for the current save, according to EA’s console guidance. Tell players this before they turn cheats on, especially if they are working on a save they want to keep trophy progress for. The effect applies to that save, so a new save is a separate case.

When the menu appears but an option is missing
If the cheat menu opens and some options are present while another one is not, the cause is usually the target or context rather than the input. Try a different Sim or object that suits the option you want, and check that the Sim is in a state where it can be interacted with.
Some community posts on the official EA forums report that individual cheats have been disabled. These reports come from community members, not EA, and the official sources reviewed do not confirm the status of any specific option. Treat them as a lead to check, not a confirmed fact.

When a Sim is stuck or unresponsive
If the Sim itself will not respond, EA’s help article on reset guidance covers the cheat console on PC and Mac and a console-specific method. That article also warns that the wildcard command resetSim * does not always reset every Sim and can return a “Sim not found” error. Use the reset as a separate fix for a stuck Sim. It is not a guaranteed repair for a shift-click input that does not respond.
What the sources do not establish
The official guidance covers the cheat prerequisite, the controller equivalents, the console achievement and trophy effect, and the stuck-Sim reset caveat. It does not diagnose keyboard remapping, operating system shortcuts, accessibility settings, hardware faults, or mod conflicts on a particular machine. If the steps above do not restore the behavior, those are the next areas to check.
