Neither cancellation meant the game itself was canceled: it was delayed, then released.
What Ubisoft canceled in September 2024
On September 24, 2024, Insider Gaming reported that Ubisoft had withdrawn its online participation in Tokyo Game Show 2024. The broadcast had been scheduled to begin on September 26 at 3:00 PM. Ubisoft’s statement, quoted in the report, said: “We regret to inform you that due to various circumstances, we have decided to cancel our online participation in Tokyo Game Show 2024 which was scheduled to start at 3:00 PM on September 26th.” The company also apologized for the short notice and to people looking forward to the broadcast. Insider Gaming’s September 24 report is the source for the statement and schedule.
The preview decision is a separate piece of reporting. Insider Gaming said it had learned that Ubisoft also canceled Assassin’s Creed Shadows press previews planned for the following week. The outlet reported that Ubisoft did not comment on that cancellation. That makes the preview cancellation a contemporaneous media report, not a separately confirmed Ubisoft announcement.
Why did Ubisoft cancel its Tokyo Game Show appearance?
Ubisoft’s quoted explanation was “various circumstances.” The statement did not identify a specific cause, and the available reporting does not establish a fuller official explanation for either decision. The word “panic” in the original topic title is therefore a framing, not a demonstrated account of Ubisoft’s motive.

Ubisoft had acknowledged criticism of Assassin’s Creed Shadows in a July 23, 2024 message to the Japanese community. The development team described the game as “an entertaining video game” and “historical fiction set in Feudal Japan,” and said it had worked with consultants, historians, researchers, and Ubisoft Japan staff. It also said the game was not intended as a factual representation of history or historical figures. Ubisoft’s message from the development team provides that context, but does not connect the criticism to the September cancellations.
It is possible to note that criticism preceded the event decisions; it is not supported to claim that it caused them. The same applies to theories about the game’s readiness or corporate alarm: the cited statement and report do not establish those explanations.

Was Assassin’s Creed Shadows canceled?
No. The September 2024 report said the game had been delayed until February 2025, not canceled. Ubisoft later released it. In a June 16, 2026 announcement about the game’s final update, Ubisoft listed platforms including PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC through Ubisoft Store, Epic Games Store, and Steam, as well as Macs with Apple silicon through the Mac App Store. Ubisoft’s final-update announcement documents the later release and platform information. Ubisoft had said in March 2026 that the game was entering its final phase of support. That franchise update is separate from the 2024 cancellation and delay.
