Ubisoft CEO Apologized for His 2023 Email, but Employees’ Concerns Remained

Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot apologized after employees said his January 2023 email shifted responsibility onto staff. The reported apology did not resolve their questions about company direction.

In January 2023, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot apologized after employees objected to an email telling them “the ball is in your court now.” Staff had read the phrase as putting responsibility for the company’s troubles on workers. Guillemot said he meant to recognize their talent and energy, but contemporary reporting said the apology did not resolve questions about Ubisoft’s direction or provide the specifics employees wanted.

Why Ubisoft employees objected to the email

The dispute unfolded amid disappointing business results, canceled or delayed games, and restructuring, according to GameSpot’s January 18, 2023 report. Those were the immediate circumstances described in the coverage, not a complete account of Ubisoft’s financial performance.

Guillemot asked developers to look inward and wrote that “the ball is in your court now,” as reported by HotHardware on January 19, 2023. Employees objected to the implication that staff should fix problems they believed management had mishandled. One employee response quoted in the coverage asked why workers had to take responsibility after the ball had been in management’s court for years.

Another employee response, as HotHardware reported it, questioned why Ubisoft was chasing industry trends instead of setting them. The article did not identify that speaker, so the remark should be understood as an attributed report of an employee’s response, not a named person’s statement.

What Guillemot said in response

At an internal meeting, an employee challenged management over how responsibility for the company’s situation was being assigned. GameSpot reported Guillemot’s reply: “I heard your feedback and I’m sorry this was perceived that way.” He said his intent had been to recognize employees’ talent and energy, and described the work as a collective journey.

The apology addressed how the wording had landed and Guillemot’s stated intention. It did not, in the account from employees cited by GameSpot, settle their concerns: sources described the meeting as light on specifics. In other words, acknowledging a communication problem was not the same as answering employees’ questions about the company’s plans.

What the 2023 coverage does—and does not—establish

HotHardware reported that Ubisoft Paris employees planned a half-day strike for January 27, 2023. The reporting captures a particular dispute and the reactions described at that time; it does not establish that every Ubisoft employee shared the same view or that the apology alone caused the planned strike.

The complete original email and a public transcript of the apology meeting are not reproduced in the cited accounts. The record here is therefore limited to the passages and exchanges those outlets reported.

How the 2020 workplace-culture commitments fit into the timeline

Ubisoft’s January 2023 email dispute came after the company’s public response to misconduct allegations in 2020. In July of that year, Ubisoft acknowledged that it had fallen short of its obligation to provide a safe and inclusive workplace. In a statement, CEO and co-founder Guillemot said, “Ubisoft has fallen short in its obligation to guarantee a safe and inclusive workplace environment for its employees.” The company also announced management departures and changes to how creative teams worked, according to Ubisoft’s workplace statement.

A later July 2020 company financial update described steps including investigations by external consultants, an anonymous reporting platform, changes to HR processes, training, anonymous employee feedback, and listening sessions. These are measures Ubisoft said it had announced or pursued; the company’s descriptions do not establish that the initiatives succeeded or restored employee trust. See Ubisoft’s July 2020 update.

Later labor concerns are separate events, not a continuation proved by the 2023 apology

Reporting in 2026 describes further employee and union criticism amid a different restructuring period. It should not be folded into the January 2023 email story as though the same employees, concerns, or events continued unchanged.

Union representatives’ criticism in February 2026

Game Developer reported in February 2026 that two Ubisoft Paris union representatives argued management could not rebuild employee trust while Guillemot remained CEO. Their comments followed a company reset involving studio closures, game cancellations, planned cost-cutting, and a five-day return-to-office mandate. The view about trust and leadership belongs to those union representatives; it is not evidence of a uniform position among Ubisoft employees.

Employee reactions to a later town hall

Insider Gaming’s 2026 report described employee criticism of a later internal town hall, including concerns about the office policy, restructuring, expected headcount reductions, and communication. Its account relied on more than a dozen anonymous employee sources and on a recording the outlet said it received on the condition that it not be made public. The criticism should be attributed to those sources, not treated as a public transcript or as a verified account of every employee’s view.

The same report included management’s explanations: Guillemot discussed the office policy, and CFO Frederik Duguet addressed future headcount. Those statements belong to the later town hall and do not change what was said—or left unanswered—in the January 2023 meeting.
