Valve’s October 22, 2025 update changed how players can obtain knives and gloves in Counter-Strike 2: five Covert-quality items can now be traded up for a higher-tier item. A market estimate reported days later put the skins market’s fall at roughly $3 billion—but that was a decline in estimated aggregate value, not proof that players collectively lost or withdrew $3 billion in cash.
What Valve changed in Counter-Strike 2
In its October 22, 2025 update notes, Valve said it had “Extended functionality of the ‘Trade Up Contract’ to allow exchanging 5 items of Covert quality.” The change opened a new route to high-tier items that had previously been obtained through cases or by buying them on the market, according to contemporaneous reporting.
How the five-item contracts work
- Five regular Covert items can be exchanged for a regular knife or gloves from one of the selected collections.
- Five StatTrak Covert items can be exchanged for a StatTrak knife.
The collection selection matters: the contract does not promise any specific knife or gloves. The update changed how these items could be obtained; it did not guarantee a particular outcome for an individual contract.
What the reported “$3 billion crash” measures
Tom’s Hardware reported on October 25, 2025, citing Price Empire, that the estimated market value had peaked above $6.08 billion before the announcement and fallen to $3.08 billion afterward—a roughly $3 billion drop. Those figures describe a third-party estimate of aggregate item value, not a verified sum of completed sales or cash losses. An estimated inventory valuation does not show that every item could have been sold at that price, or that holders realized the difference.

The market was already being described as multi-billion-dollar before the update. A February 2026 New York Attorney General pleading recited a Bloomberg figure that the Counter-Strike skins market exceeded $4.3 billion in March 2025. The document identifies itself as an unreviewed pleading copy that could be rejected by the county clerk, so the number should be treated as a figure recited in that filing—not a court finding.
What changed after the October 2025 update
Demand-based sticker pricing in the Major Shop
In May 2026, Valve announced a redesigned IEM Cologne Major Shop where sticker token prices respond to relative demand. Valve said that if a sticker’s price fell by at least 25 tokens within 24 hours after redemption, the buyer would receive a token refund for the difference. This was a later shop feature; it did not reverse the October 2025 Trade Up Contract change.

Souvenir items became eligible for contracts
On May 21, 2026, Valve announced that Souvenir-quality items could be selected in Trade Up Contracts. Their Souvenir attributes are removed, and the contract returns a normal item one quality tier higher. This is a separate contract change from using five Covert items to obtain knives or gloves.

The figures above do not establish the market’s value or direction as of October 8, 2026. The reported post-update estimate is historical, and the later figures describe different dates or changes to the game’s item systems—not a current market valuation. A meaningful comparison would need dated estimates from the same valuation provider and methodology, with estimated inventory value kept separate from completed transaction proceeds.
