Gehrman was Maria’s teacher, and she is described as one of his students. A GDC narrative-review document calls her his favorite pupil, but that closeness does not establish that Maria shared his feelings or that their relationship was romantic. The most direct wording comes from Maria’s attire description: “Maria[…]had great admiration for Gehrman, unaware of his curious mania”. This is an in-game item description, reproduced by The Paleblood Hunt, not a developer’s explanation. “Curious mania” makes clear that Gehrman’s attachment was unusual, while leaving its exact nature open.
What does the Doll have to do with Maria?
The Doll strongly resembles Maria, and its clothing description emphasizes the care behind its making: “A deep love for the doll can be surmised by the fine craftsmanship of this article, and the care with which it was kept.” The item description does not identify a speaker or say why Gehrman made the Doll.

Taken together, the resemblance and the Doll’s meticulous clothing make it plausible that Maria’s image mattered deeply to Gehrman and that the Doll became an outlet for his feelings. That is an interpretation of the clues, not a confirmed account of his motive. The Gehrman character reference also points to the relevant in-game descriptions.

Romantic or unreturned love is one possible reading of “curious mania,” especially alongside the Doll’s resemblance to Maria. But the game’s wording does not explicitly call Gehrman’s feelings romantic. Possessiveness, grief, loneliness, or a mixture of motives are also possible interpretations, not established canon.
