What ended was its run of ongoing content updates. EA’s official announcements confirm that the game later received a Nintendo Switch Complete Edition, but the official material reviewed does not explain why updates stopped. Claims that sales, budget cuts, or a particular studio decision caused the change are not established by these sources.
What was actually cancelled?
“Cancelled” can mean that a game was withdrawn or abandoned before release, or that a released game stopped receiving new content. For Battle for Neighborville, the evidence supports the second meaning: the game was released, and its updates later ended. EA’s official game page continues to list it, while EA’s later announcements document a new edition for Nintendo Switch.

EA and PopCap announced the game in September 2019, with an early Founder’s Edition and a full launch planned for October 18, 2019. EA’s announcement establishes that it was a released product, not a project cancelled before launch.
When did updates stop?
The final update is reported as September 29, 2020, by the secondary source Wikipedia’s article on the game. That date should be treated as reported rather than independently confirmed from an accessible original EA announcement: the cited EA address is no longer available in the reviewed material. The date of the last update does not, by itself, establish why updates ended.

Why did EA stop updating the game?
EA’s official materials cited here do not give a verified internal reason. They establish the game’s release and its later Switch edition, but do not say that updates stopped because of sales, budget constraints, staffing, management choices, or any other specific cause. Without a direct statement or reliable evidence, those explanations remain speculation rather than confirmed facts.
