Calling it the genre’s best is an opinion, not a proven ranking—but on momentum, route choice, learnability, combat use, and mastery, it makes a persuasive case.
What makes Titanfall 2’s movement momentum-based?
Momentum is the connective tissue between the moves. Wall-running, wall jumps, slides, air-strafing, and—depending on the pilot’s tactical—grappling can feed into one another. Instead of treating each action as an isolated animation, the game invites you to build speed, carry it across a space, and redirect it toward a new route or attack angle.

Respawn’s design discussion, reported by Game Developer in 2017, describes the acrobatics as allowing pilots to traverse levels at up to 30 mph, more than twice a pilot’s sprint speed. That is a design-era “up to” figure, not an average or a promise about every live-match run.
Wall-runs and wall jumps turn walls into routes
Jump toward a suitable wall to transition into a wall-run. The mechanic is straightforward to start, while gravity gradually pulls the pilot downward. Respawn added a speed benefit to make wall routes useful, not merely stylish. Jumping away from a wall adds another boost, creating a link to a second wall, a landing, or a different combat angle. As lead software engineer John Haggerty put it, “The next problem was to give players a reason to wall-run.”

Slides connect airborne movement to the ground
Crouching while sprinting starts a slide with a small initial speed boost. It helps carry movement back to ground level without making the landing feel like a full stop. Sliding can also set up a leap into another wall-run or an open-ground speed-preserving sequence.
Slide-hopping and air-strafing reward practice
Slide-hopping—also called bunnyhopping—is a learned timing technique, not a separate ability button. In the technique described by Game Developer, the player jumps, slides in the air, then jumps again shortly after landing. Repeating timed jumps can preserve built-up speed over open ground; mistimed inputs or obstacles can slow or stop the run.
Air-strafing means steering left and right while airborne. Respawn’s design discussion describes it as a way skilled players can reach high speeds. It is not an automatic boost for every jump: controlling the line and maintaining speed takes practice.
The grapple adds another option, not a universal requirement
Titanfall 2 also offers a grapple tactical that changes how a pilot can traverse and maneuver. That expands the route possibilities, but the core movement case does not depend on every player using the same tactical. Game Informer’s 2016 preview discusses grappling alongside the game’s other movement options and identifies PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One as platforms at that time.

Each action sets up another
A wall-run can lead into a wall jump; the jump can become a slide or another wall-run. That continuity makes level geometry part of the decision-making. You are looking for the next useful surface, landing, or opening—not simply holding sprint across the ground.
Rank #2
- Captivating Single Player Campaign – Step on to The Frontier as a Militia rifleman with aspirations of becoming a Pilot.
- Deeper Multiplayer Action – With six brand-new Titans, a host of deadly new Pilot abilities, an expanded customisation system, new modes and much more.
- Play with Friends, or Make New Ones – The social tissue of Titanfall 2, Networks makes it fast and easy to play with friends old and new.
Campaign director Steve Fukuda described the teaching goal this way: “One of the main goals was, let’s try to find a way for players to learn the mobility of Titanfall.” In a Shacknews interview, he also discussed movement puzzles that combine slides, wall-runs, and trick moves through changing spaces.
The game gives movement physical cues
Respawn adjusted view tilt to help communicate when a pilot is running along a wall and to help players anticipate the move. Animation, gun pose, and audio add further cues. Those choices make the movement easier to read, though they should not be taken as a claim that the game prevents motion sickness; that response is subjective and complex.
It is easy to start and harder to optimize
A new player can initiate a wall-run without first mastering advanced movement tech. Getting more from the system means learning how to chain actions, preserve speed, choose routes, and aim while moving. The gap between a simple first move and a higher skill ceiling is one of the game’s strongest design qualities.

How does the campaign teach movement before multiplayer?
The campaign introduces wall-running early and uses varied spaces to help players trust the mechanic. Instead of asking players to memorize an abstract movement system, it gives them room to try routes and encounter movement puzzles in context. That gradual introduction makes the same skills more usable when multiplayer adds opponents, weapons, and pressure.
Mobility has practical value in combat and navigation: wall and aerial routes let pilots change elevation and approach, while avoiding a direct crossing of exposed ground. A Prima Games movement guide similarly advises using wall-run paths to move faster and more safely than crossing open ground.

A fair argument should name its measures rather than imply a universal verdict. The available developer interviews explain Titanfall 2’s design choices; they do not establish a controlled ranking against every movement shooter. On the criteria below, the game’s particular strength is the way its actions connect.
| Criterion | What Titanfall 2 offers | What that means for the “best” claim |
|---|---|---|
| Momentum continuity | Wall-runs, jumps, slides, and practiced air control can link into speed-preserving routes. | A strong case for flow: movement choices can build on one another rather than feeling like disconnected abilities. |
| Route expression | Walls, open ground, elevation, and tactical options create different lines through a space. | Players can choose routes and approach angles, not just move faster along one lane. |
| Learnability | Starting a wall-run is simple; chaining and optimizing movement takes practice. | The entry point is approachable, with visible room to improve. |
| Combat integration | Mobility helps pilots reposition and attack from different angles, while multiplayer design also has to preserve readability. | Movement is useful in a fight, but speed alone is not enough; opponents need a chance to read and answer it. |
| Mastery depth | Timing, air control, route knowledge, and tactical choices reward practice. | There is a meaningful skill ceiling beyond basic traversal. |
These criteria explain why someone might call the system the best: it combines speed, clear cues, a simple first step, and substantial room to refine routes. They do not prove that it beats every competitor. A 2026 PC Gamer interview records one developer citing Titanfall 2 movement as inspiration for Echo Point Nova. That is evidence of influence in one case, not a genre-wide comparison.
How did Respawn balance speed with readability?
Fast movement can make close-range fights chaotic and hard to predict. During the 2016 multiplayer tech test, designer Steven DeRose said the team was addressing low predictability and close-range chaos while trying to retain speed. PC Gamer’s report said planned test-era adjustments included air and wall-run speeds and bunny-hop dampening. This is historical development context, not a description of current live balance.
In a separate Game Informer preview, multiplayer design lead Todd Alderman described the value the team wanted to preserve: “The strong value I wanted to retain was definitely the speed of the game,”. The tension is central to the system: movement should feel expressive to the pilot without becoming unreadable to everyone else.
