What does “Tetris” mean?
The name is a blend of tetra and tennis. In the explanation attributed to Pajitnov, tetra means “four” in Greek, and tennis was his favorite sport. Together, the words became “Tetris.”
What does “four” refer to in the game?
Each of Tetris’s seven distinctive pieces is made of four square cells. That four-cell design is the reference behind tetra in the name.
How did Pentominoes inspire Tetris?
Pajitnov began with an interest in Pentominoes, a puzzle game built around five-square pieces. He adapted the idea for an electronic game using pieces of four squares each. The inspiration and the finished game’s pieces are related, but they are not the same: Pentominoes supplied the puzzle idea, while Tetris’s pieces have four cells.

In a 2014 TIME interview, Pajitnov discussed his fondness for Pentominoes and translating the puzzle to a computer screen. The Tetris Company’s account connects that project to the game’s seven four-square pieces and its name.
Did Pajitnov confirm the tennis connection?
