A Fortnite update showing as 20 GB does not have one universal explanation. Epic says update sizes can vary by platform and even between players on the same platform. On PC, optional installation content can affect the size; a platform-specific patch can also be unusually large. If the Epic Games Launcher’s figure looks wrong, it may be a reporting error. Without the platform, update version, and the label attached to “20 GB,” the specific cause cannot be confirmed.
First, check what “20 GB” refers to
A launcher or console can show the size of the update download, the space needed to install it, or the game’s total installed size. Those are different measurements. Check the exact wording on the screen before comparing the number with a friend’s or treating it as the amount of data that will be downloaded.
Epic’s support guidance says Fortnite update sizes can differ across platforms and among players on the same platform. A useful comparison therefore needs the same platform, comparable PC installation options, and the same update.
Why Fortnite updates can differ in size
Platform and PC installation options
Epic identifies three PC installation options that can affect update size: High Resolution Textures, Save the World Campaign, and Pre-download Streamed Assets (also called Cosmetic Streaming). If you and another player have different options installed, your update figures may not match. See Epic’s explanation of Fortnite update-size differences.

Epic’s 2021 PC guidance said removing high-resolution content would remove around 14 GB and that the final game size could be as low as 18 GB with all optional components removed. Those are historical figures about installed content, not a forecast for the size of a current update. They illustrate why installation choices matter, but do not explain a particular 20 GB download today. Epic’s 2021 guidance on disabling high-resolution textures.
Platform-specific work in a patch
A patch can be large on one platform because of how its files are reorganized, even when the work is intended to improve performance. In Fortnite v3.5, Epic said data-layout changes intended to improve console loading made the Xbox One download larger than normal. The same notes reported load-time reductions of 25–30 seconds on Xbox One and around 10 seconds on PS4. These figures describe that historical release only; they are not evidence that a current 20 GB update has the same cause. Fortnite v3.5 patch notes.

Epic’s v3.4 notes also provide a historical example of an initial download differing from later updates: the first launch of a mobile data-download system downloaded the full game data, around 1.8 GB. That one-time initial-download figure is not a current size benchmark. Fortnite v3.4 patch notes.
What to check before troubleshooting
- Identify the platform. Note whether the update is on PC, PlayStation, Xbox, or another platform; sizes are not necessarily the same across them.
- Read the size label. Determine whether the screen means download size, required free space, or final installed size.
- On PC, compare installed options. Check whether High Resolution Textures, Save the World Campaign, and Pre-download Streamed Assets are selected.
- Confirm the update version or date. A comparison is meaningful only if both players are downloading the same release.
If the Epic Games Launcher’s size looks incorrect
Epic Games Store Support says a communications error can cause file sizes to be misreported. If the Launcher’s display seems anomalous, Epic recommends verifying Fortnite’s files and clearing the Launcher cache. Verification checks for damaged or different files and repairs them; these steps address a possible display or file issue, but are not a guaranteed way to reduce the size of a legitimate update. Follow Epic’s Launcher file-size troubleshooting steps.

What can be concluded about a 20 GB update
Twenty gigabytes alone does not show whether Fortnite is downloading more content because of your platform or installation options, applying a platform-specific patch, or displaying an incorrect size. To identify the cause for one device, you need the platform, exact update version, relevant PC content selections, and whether the figure is a download or storage requirement. Epic’s general guidance supports those checks, but does not establish the cause of an unspecified 20 GB update.
