The Far Lands stopped appearing in Minecraft: Java Edition when a terrain-generation change arrived with the Beta 1.8 pre-release. That change fixed the numerical precision and overflow errors that created them. The documented outcome is a bug fix. The sources do not establish whether Mojang set out to eliminate the Far Lands as a feature.
What the Far Lands were
The Far Lands were a terrain-generation glitch at extremely distant coordinates. They were not a biome, a designed destination, or a deliberate part of the world. A post on the official Minecraft Feedback site, written by a community member rather than by Mojang, describes them as a wall-like landscape and places their starting point at about 12,550,821 blocks along both the X and Z axes. Read that figure as a community-reported observation, not an official specification from the developers.
What caused them
The community-maintained Minecraft Wiki, in its technical history of the feature, explains the mechanism. It is community documentation rather than a published Mojang engineering account, but it is consistent with the effects described elsewhere. In summary:
- Terrain generation samples noise using floating-point inputs tied to world coordinates.
- Far from the origin, those inputs grow large enough that the arithmetic loses precision and overflows.
- At those values the noise stops varying normally, producing the flat, wall-like terrain.
- The correction applies a remainder to the input before sampling, so the overflow no longer occurs within normal vanilla bounds.
The same Wiki history notes that other floating-point precision errors shared this cause. The Minecraft Feedback post makes the same point about the Bedrock-side behavior discussed below.

What changed in Java Edition
According to the Minecraft Wiki’s version history, the familiar Far Lands persisted through Beta 1.7.3 in Java Edition. The Beta 1.8 pre-release introduced the world-generation change, and from that version the Far Lands and other floating-point precision errors stopped occurring within vanilla bounds. The Minecraft Feedback post likewise attributes the resolution of these floating-point errors to the Java world-generation change in Beta 1.8.
Two wordings fit the documented event: the Far Lands were “fixed,” or they “stopped generating.” Both describe the technical result without making a claim about motive.

- BUILD THE DREADED CREEPER – Young explorers, ages 10 and up, build a large poseable version of the iconic Minecraft mob
- MINECRAFT ACTION FIGURE – Kids construct every detail of the Creeper, from its 4 poseable legs to its detachable head
- HIDDEN SURPRISE INSIDE – Builders can remove the Creeper's head to reveal a compartment that hides a first-version Creeper minifigure and TNT element
- POSEABLE ROOM DECOR – After building, kids can put their creation on display in the bedroom or playroom
- GIFT IDEA FOR KIDS – Makes a wonderful birthday or any-time gift idea for boys and girls
Was their removal intentional?
The available sources document the fix and its mechanism. They do not document why the developers made the change in terms of whether they wanted the Far Lands gone. No statement from a Mojang developer addressing motive appears in the sources reviewed, and the Minecraft Feedback post is a community account, not an official quote.
For accuracy, the claims break down as follows:
- Established: the Far Lands were a terrain-generation effect at extreme coordinates, caused by floating-point precision and overflow in noise calculations.
- Established: in Java Edition, the change introduced with the Beta 1.8 pre-release stopped them from occurring within vanilla bounds.
- Not established: whether Mojang intended to remove them as a feature, or whether the outcome was fully anticipated.
- Not established: the exact developer reasoning behind the specific correction.
Edition and version scope
The Beta 1.8 milestone applies to Java Edition only. Bedrock Edition is not covered by the same account, and the sources do not supply a complete, authoritative history of Bedrock behavior across platforms and versions.

| Edition | What the sources document | Scope and limits |
|---|---|---|
| Java Edition | Far Lands persisted through Beta 1.7.3; the Beta 1.8 pre-release world-generation change stopped them within vanilla bounds (Minecraft Wiki version history). | Milestone is specific to Java Edition and the Beta 1.8 pre-release. |
| Bedrock Edition | The Minecraft Feedback post says a similar phenomenon existed and was entangled with other floating-point problems. | Not stated: no authoritative account of when or whether it was resolved, or how it behaves across platforms and versions. |
Do not extend the Java Beta 1.8 date to Bedrock. Any Bedrock answer would need its own version-specific source.
