Fury Bowser normally retreats once you collect a Cat Shine. If he keeps rampaging after you grab one, you have most likely reached the late-game stage of Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury on Nintendo Switch, where he stops leaving on Shine collection. The way out is to keep collecting Cat Shines until the final main-story battle opens, then use the Giga Bell to fight him as Giga Cat Mario.
What Fury Bowser is supposed to do
Nintendo’s game page describes the mode as a free-roaming adventure: you travel to islands in Lake Lapcat to collect Cat Shines, which reignite lighthouses and clear darkened terrain. Bowser is the berserk threat behind that loop. Fury Bowser appearing during exploration is part of the design, not a sign that something has broken.
Under normal conditions, collecting a Cat Shine while Bowser is attacking makes him leave. You can keep exploring and progressing while he is around, and the Shine and Giga Bell progression is the core of the mode.
Ordinary events and the late-game rampage
Two different states explain most reports of Bowser refusing to go away. Nintendo’s official page does not describe the switch between them, so the distinction below relies on Gamer Guides and the Super Mario Wiki’s Fury Bowser and Cat Shine pages.

If Bowser has been stuck in place after a Shine, you are most likely in the second state. Gamer Guides warns that the continuous rampage can begin near the end of the progression, and the 50-Shine figure is the point it gives for when the final main-story bout becomes available.
How to end the rampage
- Check your Cat Shine count. The final battle is tied to a count of 50 Cat Shines according to Gamer Guides. If you are still short, keep collecting Shines as you normally would.
- Keep collecting Shines until you reach the threshold. Gamer Guides places the rampage at the late-game stage, so the remaining Shines are what advance you toward the final fight.
- Find the Giga Bell. Nintendo says the Giga Bell lets Mario transform into Giga Cat Mario, described as going toe-to-toe with Bowser “in a titanic battle of biggies.”
- Engage Fury Bowser as Giga Cat Mario. Beating this battle is the progression step that resolves the continuous rampage.
Troubleshooting checklist
- Bowser just appeared while exploring: Collect a nearby Cat Shine, or wait for the event cycle to move on. Nintendo does not document exact event timing.
- He stays after you collected a Shine, and you are well short of 50: Your situation most likely falls under ordinary events, since guides tie the continuous rampage to the endgame. Keep collecting Shines and advancing; this reading is an inference from the guides, not a published rule.
- He stays after a Shine, and you have 50 or more: You are in the late-game state. Go to the final battle and use the Giga Bell.
- You are unsure whether you have reached the final battle: Check your Cat Shine count and story progress against the guide thresholds above.
Why an amiibo will not fix it
Nintendo says amiibo are supported, but its page states that the Bowser amiibo makes Fury Bowser appear rather than retreat. Using one will not send him away, so it is not a fix for the problem described here.

What is and is not established
- Nintendo’s official page confirms the premise, the Cat Shine and lighthouse loop, the Giga Bell’s role, the Nintendo Switch platform, and the amiibo behavior.
- Nintendo does not explain the continuous-rampage trigger or the event timer. The 50-Shine threshold and the endgame rampage come from Gamer Guides, a third-party walkthrough whose page does not clearly show a publication date.
- The Super Mario Wiki is community-maintained, so its progression details are secondary and should be checked against the game if they conflict with your save.
