If you can’t cancel Xbox Game Pass, first check that you’re signed in to the Microsoft account that bought it. The other common blockers are an overdue balance, billing managed by a third party, or a subscription that is already set to expire. If the page says “Turn on recurring billing,” your subscription is already scheduled to end on the displayed date; it is not set to renew.
Check these issues in order
- Sign in with the purchasing Microsoft account. Open Microsoft Services & subscriptions and check the account that bought Game Pass. If the subscription is missing, try other Microsoft accounts you may have used. Microsoft’s cancellation steps are to find the subscription, select Manage, then Cancel and follow the prompts. See Microsoft’s cancellation instructions.
- Read the button and end date. If the page offers Turn on recurring billing, recurring billing is already off. Microsoft says the subscription will expire on the date shown and won’t automatically renew; you can use it until then. You do not need to cancel it again.
- Look for an overdue balance. Microsoft says an amount owed may prevent cancellation until it is paid. If you believe the balance is incorrect, contact Microsoft Support rather than paying a charge you dispute without checking it.
- Check who bills you. If an app store or another seller handles payment, manage cancellation and refund requests with that provider. Microsoft’s instructions for its own subscriptions may not control a subscription billed elsewhere. See Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance.
If you were charged after trying to cancel
A charge does not by itself prove the cancellation failed. Microsoft lists cancellation too close to the billing date and signing in with the wrong account among possible reasons for a post-cancellation charge. Check the subscription’s status and end date in the account that purchased it, then use Microsoft’s payment and cancellation troubleshooting. If the charge or subscription still does not make sense, contact Microsoft Support.
Cancellation and a refund are different
Turning off recurring billing stops a future renewal; it does not automatically mean you will receive money back for a charge already made. Microsoft assesses refund eligibility during the cancellation process, and eligibility depends on factors such as country and subscription type. Its general subscription refund policy is not a guarantee that a Game Pass purchase qualifies. Xbox subscribers should check the Microsoft refund policy and follow the Xbox-specific cancellation or refund route linked there. Purchases billed by a third party must be addressed with that provider.
Who can cancel the subscription?
The Microsoft account owner must sign in to cancel. If someone else pays for or uses the account, the person who owns the Microsoft account needs to manage the subscription; a payer cannot necessarily cancel it on another person’s behalf. Microsoft’s official Xbox subscription cancellation video describes this account-owner requirement.

Microsoft-billed or third-party-billed?
| Billing route | Where to manage it | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft bills the subscription | Microsoft Services & subscriptions | Use the purchasing account, check the recurring-billing status and end date, and resolve any overdue balance. |
| A third party bills the subscription | The app store or seller that processed payment | Ask that provider about cancellation and refund steps; Microsoft may not be able to manage the third-party billing arrangement. |
