A MineColonies farmer that stands idle usually has one of five problems: missing tools or crop input, the day/night cycle turned off, a Field block that is not set up or not recognized, a field the hut cannot take on at its current level, or the normal one-action-per-day pace, which makes farming look slower than it is. Work through the checks below in order. Most idle farmers are fixed in the first three steps.
Start with the farmer’s supplies and the world setting
The MineColonies Wiki’s Farmer’s Hut page lists what the farmer needs before any field work can begin. Check these first:
- A hoe for preparing and planting the field.
- An axe for harvesting crops.
- The crop to cultivate, either its seed or, for crops without seeds, the raw crop item.
Open the Farmer’s Hut inventory and check any racks built or upgraded with the hut, since the worker draws from those storage locations. A missing tool or an empty crop slot is the most common reason a new farmer does nothing.
Also confirm that the day/night cycle is enabled. The same page states that a farmer must have the day/night cycle running in order to work. A world with the cycle turned off will leave every farmer idle regardless of how the fields are set up.

Configure the Field block
A farmer works only the fields that have been properly set up. The Field block is the scarecrow-shaped block placed in farmland. Set one up like this:
- Place a Field block on farmland inside the area you want farmed.
- Open the Field block’s GUI.
- Place the crop seed in that GUI. For crops that do not have seeds, place the raw crop item instead.
- Adjust the field’s area if the default does not cover the plot you intended. The documented maximum area is 11 by 11 blocks.
A field with no crop set in its GUI will not be planted, so the farmer has nothing to do there even if the hut otherwise looks correct.
Confirm the hut recognizes and assigns the field
Open the Farmer’s Hut window and switch to the fields tab. This tab lists the fields the hut can see, along with indicators that show each field’s status:

- A red X means the field is already assigned.
- A green check means the field is unassigned and available.
- A greyed-out control can mean the field is being assigned automatically, or that some other restriction applies.
Hover over a field entry to see the stated reason it cannot be used. If a field you built does not appear at all, the Field block is either not placed correctly or outside the hut’s reach, so recheck its position and setup. If the field appears with a red X, another worker may already own it, which is the normal result of assignment and not a fault.
Check field capacity against hut level
The number of fields a hut can manage depends on its level. The Farmer’s Hut page documents one field per building level, up to five fields at level 5. A lower-level hut with several fields may therefore leave some of them unworked.
| Farmer’s Hut level | Fields supported |
|---|---|
| Level 1 | 1 |
| Level 2 | 2 |
| Level 3 | 3 |
| Level 4 | 4 |
| Level 5 | 5 |
If you have built more fields than the hut’s level allows, either upgrade the hut or remove or unassign fields until the count fits.

Understand the one-action-per-day pace
A farmer performs only one action per field each day. That action is hoeing, planting, or harvesting, so a single field goes through several separate days before it produces a harvest. A farmer that appears to be doing nothing may simply be waiting for the next day’s action on a field that has just been planted or harvested. Check the field’s growth before assuming the farmer has stopped.
Treat fertilizer as optional
Bone meal and compost speed up growth during the harvest phase, but only when they are available and fertilizer requests are enabled. The MineColonies Wiki’s Compost page states plainly that compost is not required for the farmer to work. A farmer without fertilizer will still plant and harvest. It will simply take longer to bring each crop to maturity. Do not build a fertilizer supply chain to fix an idle farmer; that step will not address the cause.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCheck requests, stored items, and stuck workers
The hut inventory holds the supplies the farmer uses, and the tasks tab shows the requests the colony has placed and where those items are being sent. If a request sits unfilled, the farmer may be waiting on an item that never arrives.

If the farmer has wandered away from the hut and gets stuck, use a Recall Worker to return it to the hut. Once the worker is back at the hut, rerun the checks above, since the problem often becomes clearer when the worker is in place.
Rule out colony-wide food problems
Citizens with zero saturation stop working and request food. The MineColonies Wiki’s Food page documents this behavior. If several workers are idle at once, the colony’s food supply is the likely cause, not the farmer’s setup. Check the food requests in the tasks tab and make sure the colony has food available. This is a broader colony problem; it does not by itself establish a farmer-specific fault.

If every item above is correct, the problem may be tied to the specific Minecraft or MineColonies version, or to the modpack you are running. The MineColonies Wiki does not document a single universal fix for an idle farmer, so do not assume a bug without first confirming your setup. Before reporting the issue, collect:
