2. Check the disc, if you have a disc copy
Inspect the disc for visible dirt or damage. If it needs cleaning, wipe it gently with a soft, clean cloth. If the symptom looks like a disc-reading failure, test another game disc in the PS4. 3. Check USB extended storage, if the game is installed there
If Prototype is stored on a USB extended-storage drive, make sure the drive is connected properly before launching. 4. Restore licenses for a digital copy
For a digital copy, confirm you are signed in to the account that owns the game, then restore licenses using the PS4 option Settings > Account Management > Restore Licenses. PlayStation includes license restoration in its game-launch guidance; it is not relevant to a disc copy.
5. Delete and redownload the game
If the game still fails to start, delete its installed game data and download it again from your Library. A wired internet connection, if available, can make the redownload less vulnerable to interruptions. Deleting the game application is different from initializing the console; check what you are selecting before confirming any deletion. 6. Update PS4 system software
Check for and install the latest system software available to your console. Follow the PS4 update option under Settings > System Software Update. Once installation is complete, try the game again.
7. Rebuild the database in Safe Mode
PlayStation recommends rebuilding the database as a troubleshooting step for certain game-launch and disc issues. To enter Safe Mode, turn the PS4 off completely, then press and hold the power button until you hear the second beep; connect the controller by USB and press the PS button. Select Rebuild Database from the Safe Mode menu. Do not confuse this with Initialize PS4: initialization is a separate, destructive option, not the next button to press.

8. Test another game and record what happens
Launch another game and note whether it also crashes. Record the exact error code, whether Prototype fails at launch or during play, and the steps that reliably trigger the crash. If only Prototype fails, contact the game publisher with those details; if multiple games fail, contact PlayStation Support. Which details matter when the steps do not work?
- Copy type: disc or digital. A disc check cannot explain a digital-copy crash.
- Crash timing: at launch, during a particular section, or at seemingly random times.
- Scope: whether other games crash too.
- Storage: whether the installation is on USB extended storage.
