Most Minecraft bubble elevators fail because the base block is wrong for the direction of travel, or because the shaft contains flowing water instead of source water all the way through. Use soul sand for an upward ride and magma for a downward ride; then check the entire water column for interruptions.
Check the base block and intended direction
The block at the bottom determines which way the bubble column moves:
| Travel direction | Base block | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Up | Soul sand | Pushes entities upward |
| Down | Magma block | Pulls entities downward |
If you want to go up but the column pulls you down, replace the magma with soul sand. A magma block is not an alternative upward-lift block.
Make sure every water block is a source
A bubble column needs source water throughout its vertical path. Flowing water can interrupt the bubbles, even when the shaft looks full. Inspect the column from the base upward, paying particular attention to the height where the bubbles stop.

A practical way to make a shaft of source water is to fill it with water, grow kelp through the water, then remove the kelp and replace the bottom block with soul sand for an upward lift or magma for a downward column. This is a build method, not a Mojang official guide.
Find blocks interrupting the column
Check the point where the bubbles disappear for waterlogged blocks or other blocks interrupting the water path. Waterlogged blocks can stop bubble transfer. Clear the interruption and confirm the water above it is still a continuous column of source blocks.

Check your edition and version before calling it a bug
Mojang’s bug tracker records a historical Bedrock Preview issue, MCPE-189889, involving water interactions with magma and soul sand in Bedrock 1.21.60.27 Preview. The tracker lists the fix as Bedrock 1.21.70 Preview and Bedrock 1.21.70. This is a version-specific report, not evidence that a bubble elevator failing in every current Java or Bedrock build is a game bug.
If the base block, source water, and path are correct but the elevator still fails, note your edition, exact version, and whether you are playing a Preview build or using add-ons. Those details help distinguish a construction problem from a version-specific issue. Java has a separate tracker report concerning waterlogged blocks and bubble transfer: MC-141860.
