If your Minecraft villager has completed even one trade, its profession and offers are locked; breaking its workstation will not make it unemployed. If it has never traded, remove other villagers’ workstations, break the block it claimed, and let it reach a replacement during the day. In Bedrock Edition, also check that the villager belongs to a village with at least one bed.
First, check whether you have traded with the villager
Trading history is the decisive check. A villager that has completed a trade keeps its profession and trade offers, so removing its workstation cannot reset the job. The Minecraft Wiki’s trading-hall tutorial states that “Once a villager has traded once, they will keep that trade forever.” If you have traded with it, keep the profession or find another villager that has never been traded with.

If no trade has ever been completed, the profession can be changed by removing its claimed workstation and allowing it to claim a different one. Wait to trade until the desired offer appears, because that first completed trade locks the result.

How to reset an untraded villager
- Clear competing workstations. Remove nearby job-site blocks, including lecterns, composters, smokers, and any other workstation another villager might claim. In a shared trading hall, a different villager may take the block you intended for your target.
- Break the target’s claimed workstation during the day. Keep the villager close enough to reach the block. Villagers need to process job-site changes, and inaccessible blocks or competing claims can make it appear that the profession is not resetting.
- Place one intended workstation. Watch for green particles around the villager and block, then give the villager time to update its profession. If another villager claims the block, isolate the target and try again.
- Check the offer before trading. If it is not the job or offer you want, remove that workstation and repeat the process. Complete a trade only once you are satisfied with the result.
If you play Bedrock Edition, check the village and bed
Bedrock has additional village and workstation-claim behavior. Mojang’s Bug Tracker entry MCPE-73804 documents a case where villagers only claim workstations if they are in a village defined by at least one bed. If a Bedrock villager will not claim a replacement job site, place or restore a bed and make sure the villager is part of that village before testing again.

Bedrock has also had documented workstation-ownership issues, so the exact game version and setup can matter. Isolating one villager with one bed and one workstation helps distinguish a village or competing-claim problem from a locked profession.
Why breaking the workstation may not change the job
- The villager has traded: its profession and offers are locked, regardless of workstation changes.
- Another villager owns the replacement block: clear competing workstations and test with the target isolated.
- The villager cannot reach the job site: keep the block accessible and let the villager pathfind to it.
- The village is not recognized as expected: this is especially relevant in Bedrock, where a bed-defined village can be required for job-site claims.
- You are checking at night: make the change during daytime so the villager can process job-site behavior.
Java and Bedrock troubleshooting differences
In Java, an untraded villager generally relinquishes a profession when its job-site block is removed or inaccessible, provided it can reach a replacement. In Bedrock, village and bed-link behavior adds another condition, and workstation-claim issues have been documented. If the same setup behaves differently than expected, identify your edition and game version before changing the whole trading hall.
