Restocking is not instant: Mojang’s Java release notes say villagers can restock up to twice per in-game day when they can work.
First, check whether the trade is exhausted
An exhausted offer is disabled until its stock is replenished. In Java Edition, the trading interface marks it with a red X; in Bedrock Edition, the trade slot appears red. These indicators mean the offer is out of stock, not necessarily that the villager has lost its profession. The Minecraft Wiki’s trading reference describes these edition-specific indicators.
Check the villager’s job site and access
A villager needs to work at the job-site block associated with its profession to restock normally. For example, a librarian works at a lectern and a leatherworker at a cauldron; Mojang lists these profession-workstation relationships in its Java Village & Pillage release notes.
Make sure you are checking the workstation the villager has actually claimed, not merely a nearby block of the right type. The villager must be able to get to and work at that job site. A blocked path, inaccessible workstation, or a different villager claiming the block can prevent the expected work and restock.

Allow time for the work schedule
Trades do not refill continuously or necessarily at the moment you expect. Mojang’s 2019 Java release notes say villagers restock up to twice per in-game day if they can work at their workstation. Its Bedrock Village & Pillage changelog says villagers resupply trades when arriving at their job site. Give the villager an opportunity to reach and work at the station rather than repeatedly checking for an immediate refresh.
If you play Bedrock, check the bed link
The trading reference says a Bedrock villager must be linked to a bed to restock, but does not need to sleep in that bed. Check for a valid bed link if the villager can reach its workstation but still does not replenish trades. The cited reference does not establish bed linkage as a Java requirement, so do not assume the same check applies there.

Use this quick troubleshooting order
- Open the trading screen and confirm the offer is exhausted: look for a red X in Java or a red trade slot in Bedrock.
- Identify the villager’s profession and its corresponding job-site block.
- Verify the villager has claimed that workstation and can reach and work at it.
- Wait through a suitable work period; restocking is limited and tied to work, not an instant player-triggered reset.
- In Bedrock, verify the villager is linked to a bed, even if it does not sleep there.
- If the issue persists, note the edition and exact game version, and whether the world uses a preview, mods, or a server. Those details matter before attributing the behavior to a bug.
When to suspect a bug
Restocking bugs have existed, but an old report is not a diagnosis for a current world. Mojang’s issue tracker records a Java restocking issue for 1.14-era versions, fixed in 1.14.3 Pre-Release 1: MC-147740. That historical fix does not establish that a present-day problem has the same cause. If the normal checks fail, provide your edition, version, and whether you are using mods, a preview build, or a server when seeking help.
