How to redeem an Xbox code
- Open Microsoft’s gift card and code redemption page or the Xbox redemption portal.
- Sign in to the Microsoft account that should receive the code. Codes are redeemed to a Microsoft account, so check the signed-in account before continuing.
- Enter or paste the code and follow the on-screen instructions.
What to check when redemption fails
Confirm the account
Make sure you are signed in to the account you intended to use. If you have more than one Microsoft account, check which one is active before submitting the code. The Xbox portal also provides access to account order history and code-redemption information.

Look up the exact error
If Xbox displays an error, consult the Xbox prepaid-code help page and the Xbox Error & Status Code guidance linked from Microsoft’s redemption article. Use the wording or code shown on screen to find relevant official guidance; don’t assume the code is expired, already redeemed, region-restricted, or blocked without confirmation.
If you bought the wrong code
Microsoft Support says: “If you bought the wrong code, please contact the retailer.” The retailer is the appropriate first contact for an incorrect purchase.

When the cause is unclear
Microsoft’s redemption instructions explain how to redeem a code and what to do about a wrong purchase, but they do not establish a fix for every possible error. If the official guidance does not resolve the message you see, contact Xbox Support with the exact error and purchase details. Avoid buying a replacement code until you know whether the problem is with the purchase or the account.
