The fix depends on the message you see. An Xbox profile or account-link problem needs different steps from a game-service or network error. Identify the exact error first, then follow the matching path below; don’t unlink accounts as a first move.
Start with the exact error message
Check the message on your Xbox or in the game. Epic’s support guidance distinguishes account and login errors from connection errors. For the specific Xbox message “Error Connecting to Epic Services Queue,” Epic directs players to Microsoft Support.
- “There was an error processing the credentials from the external login system”: Check whether the Microsoft account has an Xbox profile and whether the right Xbox profile is active.
- “This account for [platform] is already linked to another Epic Games account”: Find the Epic account already associated with the Xbox account before trying to change links.
- “Error Connecting to Epic Services Queue”: Follow Epic’s direction to Microsoft Support.
- A general connection or matchmaking error: Use Epic’s network troubleshooting guidance rather than assuming the Xbox account link is the cause.
Fix an external-login credentials error
Epic says this error can appear when you sign in with a Microsoft account that does not have an Xbox profile. Complete Xbox profile setup at Xbox.com, then try connecting again. Confirm that the intended Xbox profile is signed in on the console as well. Epic states: “Banned Xbox accounts cannot be linked to an Epic Games account.” See Epic’s external-login credentials guidance.
Find the Epic account already linked to Xbox
An Xbox account may already be connected to an Epic account created automatically when the player first played, even if the player never completed a full Epic account registration. To identify it, open Epic’s sign-in page in a private browser window and choose the Xbox sign-in option. This helps avoid being silently signed into a different Epic account. Epic explains this process in its guidance on a console account connected to another Epic account.

If the browser keeps choosing the wrong account
Use a private window and make sure the Xbox sign-in option is selected. Epic also recommends clearing the browser cache when a browser automatically signs into the wrong account; its Epic account login error guidance covers login issues and related steps.
Understand the risks before unlinking
Unlinking is not a safe diagnostic step. Epic warns that unlinking can affect access to data stored on the account, including progress when playing from that console. First identify which Epic account is linked and confirm that changing accounts is necessary. If it is, read Epic’s current linked console account change and restriction-removal instructions before proceeding. Epic describes a restriction-removal step for changing a linked console account and says it can be used only once every 365 days; verify the current instructions because account policies can change.

For general connection or matchmaking problems
If the error is not about account credentials or an existing link, follow Epic’s connection troubleshooting guidance. It includes restarting the modem or router and switching to public DNS. These are general network troubleshooting steps, not evidence that a router is causing an account-link error.
