An Xbox gift card usually fails because the wrong Microsoft account is signed in, the card’s currency or purchase country does not match the account’s region, or the redemption route is showing a specific app error. Start by checking the account at Microsoft’s redemption page; then use the matching fix below.
Check which Microsoft account is signed in
Xbox and Microsoft gift card value is added to the Microsoft account that redeems the code. If you use more than one account or Gamertag, make sure the intended one is signed in before redeeming. Otherwise, the balance may be added to a different account than the one you meant to use. Microsoft explains this in its guidance on adding money to a Microsoft account.

- Open Microsoft.com/redeem.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account associated with the Xbox profile where you want the credit.
- Enter the code and follow the prompts.
- Check the balance for that same account.
Check the card’s country and currency
A card bought for one market may not work with an account registered in another. Microsoft’s U.S. Xbox gift card listing says its cards are denominated in local currency and work only in the country where purchased. Microsoft’s gift card terms say a card’s currency can be added only to an account registered in a jurisdiction that recognizes that currency; balances cannot be converted.
Compare the card’s purchase country and currency with the account’s registered jurisdiction. The product listing cited here is for the U.S.; check the terms and product information for your own market. If the card is not suitable for your account’s region, contact the retailer about the purchase. The published guidance does not establish a workaround such as using a VPN or changing the account country.

Try redeeming in a browser if the app fails
If redemption fails in the Xbox console or an app without showing the specific Microsoft Store update error below, try the official web route at Microsoft.com/redeem. Microsoft says a code that cannot be redeemed through the app can be redeemed on the web instead. Confirm that the intended Microsoft Account or Gamertag is signed in before entering it.
Update the app only for the matching update error
If the message says, “Unable to complete this transaction. Please update to the latest version of Microsoft Store,” Microsoft recommends updating the relevant app or device. Its guidance for this error covers Microsoft Store on Windows, an Xbox console, or the Xbox app on PC.

- Windows: Update Microsoft Store.
- Xbox console: Open Settings > System > Updates and install available updates.
- Xbox app on PC: Update the app.
If app redemption still fails, try the web route. These update steps are for the stated update message; they are not a confirmed fix for an invalid-code or already-redeemed message.

Know when to contact the retailer or Microsoft
If you bought the wrong code, Microsoft says, “If you bought the wrong code, please contact the retailer.” For a code or account problem that remains unresolved, use Microsoft’s gift card redemption help and its linked Xbox Error & Status Code guidance or support options.

Keep the receipt and card or packaging available for the retailer or support conversation. Do not post the full code publicly or send it to an unofficial helper. Microsoft’s public guidance does not explain every invalid, already-redeemed, or generic error, so use the exact message shown to find the appropriate support route.
