There is no single guaranteed cause. The usual candidates are one Sim stuck in a broken state, a mod that stopped working after a game update, or a wider interaction or freezing bug. The fastest route to a fix is to work out which of these you are seeing before changing anything, because each one calls for a different response.
Work out the scope of the problem first
Before you try any fix, check whether the problem is limited to one Sim or affects the whole game. The pattern you see points to different next steps.

These comparisons narrow the possibilities. They do not prove a cause on their own, so treat each result as a clue to test rather than a diagnosis.
Reset a stuck Sim
EA Help’s reset article states: “Sometimes your Sims get stuck—here’s how to reset them.” Resetting is the first step when only one Sim is unresponsive. The shortcut that opens the cheat window depends on your platform:

Method 1: reset by name
- Open the cheat window with the shortcut for your platform.
- Type
resetSim Firstname Lastnameusing the Sim’s full name. - Press Enter and check whether the Sim responds to clicks.
EA also documents resetSim *, which targets all Sims in the current game. This wildcard does not always reset every Sim, so if a Sim is still stuck afterward, reset that Sim by name.
Method 2: reset from the object menu
- Open the cheat window and enter
testingcheats true. - Shift-click the stuck Sim.
- Choose Reset Object (Debug).
A reset returns the Sim to a playable state. It does not send them home. Their needs stay the same, while their wishes and moodlets are canceled.
Test for a mod conflict
EA says a mod that caused no trouble before an update may cause problems afterward. If the symptom began after a patch, run a clean test before you assume the game itself is at fault.

- Launch the game with mods disabled.
- Check whether clicking Sims works in Live Mode.
- Exit without saving while custom content is absent, so that missing content is not written into your save.
- Before you re-enable any mod, check with its creator for a version that is compatible with the current game patch.
If the problem disappears with mods off, move on to isolating the culprit. If it persists, the cause is probably outside your mods, and the broader steps in the sections below apply.
Narrow down the mod responsible
- Remove mods in batches rather than one at a time, and test after each batch.
- When the problem returns after a batch, split that batch in half and test again.
- Start with functional game mods. EA says these are more likely to cause issues than custom content, so remove them first.
- If a mod adds menus to Sims or objects and those menus fail to open, treat that mod as the first suspect.
This method is diagnostic guidance. It shows which mod is associated with the failure in your setup, but it does not confirm that the mod is inherently faulty.
Community leads from older forum troubleshooting
An older EA forum thread about this symptom suggests a few steps players have tried. These are community suggestions rather than guaranteed fixes, and they may not match the current game version:

- Check whether UI Cheats are active and turn them off to see whether the issue changes.
- Move the Mods folder out of its usual location to test whether a mod is responsible.
- Delete the
localthumbcache.packagefile, which is a cache file, and let the game rebuild it. - Start a new save to check whether the problem is tied to the save you are using.
Use these steps as tests. If one of them changes the behavior, record exactly which step made the difference before you rely on it.
What EA’s September 2026 update fixed, and what is still open
EA’s September 22, 2026 update notes describe several interaction and freezing problems. According to those notes, EA:
- fixed a major case in which interactions became stuck in the queue, tied to interaction priority and duration, especially for sleep and chat (including group chats);
- addressed a case in which Sims and time froze while the environment kept animating;
- adjusted some object-tending interactions that left Sims waiting.
The same notes say EA is still investigating other freezing and canceled-interaction bugs that can look similar to this symptom. The update also fixed a case in which some infant interactions were canceled or blocked. That fix applies only to infant interactions and does not cover Sim menus in general.

The team’s statement in the same notes reads: “Sims getting stuck or freezing and interactions resetting are major pain points for players that we put a lot of attention on for this update and that we’ve been investigating for a while.” It is attributed to the team rather than to a named individual.
Because the update does not specifically describe a fix for a failed click on other Sims, do not assume the update resolved your problem. If the symptom persists after you have updated, the reset and mod tests above are still the right next steps.

- the game version your game displays;
- when the problem began, and whether it coincided with a patch or mod change;
- whether the problem also happens in a new save;
- which tests you have already run, such as the reset methods, the mods-off launch, and the batch-removal test.
No published figure establishes how common this click failure is. The forum reports described above are individual accounts and were not controlled tests, so they show what players have tried rather than how widely a single cause applies.
The fixes in this article come from EA’s published guidance and community leads. Results can vary by game version, mod setup, and platform, so keep track of what changed when you test each step.
