The right target depends on your stream configuration: use the expected dimensions in the warning rather than assuming every stream should be 720p or 1080p.
What YouTube’s resolution warning means
YouTube checks the incoming stream, not just the prerecorded file you selected. The encoded video arriving at YouTube must have the height and width chosen on the Ingestion Settings page. A source file’s resolution, an encoder’s canvas, and its scaled output can differ, so the file’s properties alone may not reveal what YouTube is receiving. YouTube’s live-streaming error guidance states that the incoming video must match the selected dimensions.
Pay attention to the warning’s exact wording. YouTube distinguishes a current resolution that “is not optimal” from one “which is not supported for this configuration.” The latter message gives the expected video resolution. Follow the dimensions and guidance shown for your stream; do not treat the two messages as interchangeable or assume one universal target.
How to diagnose and fix the mismatch
- Open the active stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Read the entire resolution warning and note its timestamp and any expected width and height. YouTube says the Live Dashboard and Live Control Room check the stream being sent and display errors beside the Health Indicator with timestamps. Red errors are critical and may prevent an event from starting or cause viewer problems; yellow errors are moderate and may degrade quality. Use the message itself to identify the issue, not color alone. YouTube Help: Live streaming error messages.
- Check the dimensions actually being encoded and sent. Inspect the encoder’s outgoing video settings or output. Do not rely only on the prerecorded file’s properties, camera or source resolution, or canvas setting: scaling or encoding can change the final dimensions.
- Compare the outgoing dimensions with YouTube’s Ingestion Settings. Make the encoder output match the selected ingest resolution, or select an ingest configuration that matches the output, as appropriate for your setup. YouTube’s requirement is that the incoming video have the dimensions selected in Ingestion Settings.
- Apply the warning’s specific guidance. If it says the current resolution is unsupported, use the expected dimensions it provides. If it says the resolution is not optimal, treat it as that distinct warning rather than relabeling it as an unsupported-configuration error.
- If you use primary and backup feeds, compare both. Keep their resolutions matched; YouTube identifies different primary and backup resolutions as an issue.
- If the warning returns during a prerecorded playlist, check each item. Compare file dimensions and frame rates, and verify that OBS’s Base (Canvas) Resolution and Output (Scaled) Resolution reflect the output you intend to send. Inconsistent playlist media settings can help explain a warning that appears when playback changes items. StreamNeo’s playlist troubleshooting guide also recommends consistent resolution, frame rate, audio sample rate, and codecs across items; YouTube’s message remains the authority for the platform warning.
- Change the setting implicated by the message, then check stream health again. Look for a fresh warning after the change. Avoid changing unrelated settings such as bitrate or audio unless another error points to them.
Which resolution should your encoder send?
There is no single resolution to prescribe from the warning alone. The correct dimensions are determined by the active stream’s Ingestion Settings and, when YouTube reports an unsupported configuration, by the expected dimensions in the message. The YouTube Live Streaming API documents configuration values including 240p, 360p, 480p, 720p, 1080p, 1440p, and 2160p, as well as variable for automatic detection. These are configuration values, not a recommendation to choose any particular resolution; the API specifies that variable resolution and frame rate must be selected together. Common causes and what to check
- The encoder is scaling the video: The source file may have the expected dimensions while the encoded output does not. Check the outgoing width and height and any scaled-output setting.
- The ingest selection and encoder output disagree: Match the encoded dimensions to the resolution selected in Ingestion Settings, or adjust the ingest selection to match the intended output.
- A playlist changes to a differently configured file: Inspect every item, especially if the warning timestamp coincides with a file change. Look for inconsistent dimensions or frame rates.
- Primary and backup feeds differ: Compare their video resolutions and align their stream settings.
- The message is about optimization, not support: Read the full wording before changing settings. A “not optimal” warning is not the same as an unsupported-resolution message that names expected dimensions.
The warning does not, by itself, identify your encoder, actual output resolution, selected ingest target, or whether you have failover configured. Those details have to be checked in your own stream setup.
