Errors you may see
Common messages include:
- “The program can’t start because WiaExtensionHost64.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because WiaExtensionHost64.dll was not found.”
- “There was a problem starting WiaExtensionHost64.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “Error loading WiaExtensionHost64.dll.”
- “WiaExtensionHost64.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”

wiaextensionhost64.dll is a Microsoft Windows component associated with Windows Image Acquisition, or WIA. WIA allows applications to communicate with scanners, cameras, and other imaging hardware. Windows uses this extension-host architecture when 32-bit imaging software needs to work with 64-bit WIA components.
On 64-bit Windows, the normal location is:
C:WindowsSystem32WiaExtensionHost64.dll
Do not download a replacement from a random DLL website. First install pending Windows updates, then run DISM and SFC in that order. If the file is present but only one scanner, camera, printer, or imaging application fails, repair that device driver or application next.

What causes the error
The filename does not identify one particular game or application. The most common possibilities are:

- A damaged or missing Windows component.
- A failed Windows update or damaged component store.
- A broken scanner, camera, or printer WIA driver.
- An imaging application that is damaged or incorrectly loading its dependencies.
- Antivirus quarantine or a false positive.
- Malware or an unauthorized replacement.
- A missing dependency rather than the DLL itself.
“The specified module could not be found” does not always mean wiaextensionhost64.dll is absent. The file may exist while another DLL that it needs is missing.

Why a 32-bit program can mention a 64-bit DLL
The 64 in the filename describes the Windows component, not necessarily the application that displays the error. A 32-bit program can use WIA through Windows’ compatibility architecture. That program may therefore trigger an error involving a 64-bit WIA extension host.
Do not copy the file into SysWOW64 simply because the failing application is 32-bit. On 64-bit Windows, System32 is the normal directory for 64-bit system components. The name is historical and does not mean the directory contains 32-bit files.
Check the file before repairing anything
1. Check the expected location
- Press Windows key + E.
- Select This PC.
- Open the Windows drive, usually Local Disk (C:).
- Open Windows, then System32.
- Look for
WiaExtensionHost64.dll.
If it is missing, continue with Windows repair. If it is somewhere outside the Windows directory, treat that copy cautiously.

2. Check the digital signature
- Right-click the file.
- Select Properties.
- Open Digital Signatures.
- Select the signature and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports a valid signature from Microsoft.
A matching filename is not proof that a file is genuine. Be especially suspicious of copies in:
Downloads%TEMP%- A user profile folder
- An application’s writable data folder
- A recently extracted archive
If the file is present in System32 but the signature is invalid, do not restore or manually register it. Run a security scan and repair Windows instead.

Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
A failed update can leave protected Windows files incomplete.

- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install everything available.
- Restart when prompted.
- Check Windows Update again after restarting.
Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Update & Security.
- Open Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install the available updates and restart.
Test the affected program after Windows starts again. If the error remains, run the repair commands below.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies. Running SFC first can leave it unable to obtain a usable repair source.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Choose Yes if User Account Control appears.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows after both commands complete.
How to read the result
- “The operation completed successfully” from DISM means the component-store repair completed.
- “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them” means SFC replaced damaged protected files.
- “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them” means the repair is incomplete. Run Windows Update again, restart, and repeat DISM followed by SFC.
- If both commands report no integrity violations but the application still fails, investigate the WIA device, application, or a missing dependency.

If DISM cannot use Windows Update
A damaged Windows Update source can prevent DISM from completing. Microsoft supports using a genuine, matching Windows installation source:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the correct path to your matching Windows repair source. Do not use a random folder or files copied from another Windows release.
Fix 3: Reinstall the scanner, camera, or printer driver
If Windows repair does not help, determine whether the problem occurs only when a particular imaging device is connected.

- Disconnect the scanner, camera, or printer.
- Visit the hardware manufacturer’s official support page.
- Download the driver for your exact Windows version and device model.
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Cameras, Imaging devices, Printers, and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Uninstall device.
- If offered, select the option to remove the driver package.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the official driver you downloaded.
- Reconnect the device and test the application.
Do not replace WiaExtensionHost64.dll with a vendor DLL. The manufacturer’s software should integrate with Windows WIA rather than substitute the Microsoft system component.
Driver version hunting is often the slowest part, especially when several imaging devices are installed. Fix 4: Repair or reinstall the affected application
If only one program fails while Windows scanning and other imaging software work, the application may be damaged or loading an incompatible dependency.
Repair a Windows 11 application
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair, if available.
- Start the application again.
If Repair is not available or does not work:
- Uninstall the application from Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Download a current installer from the application publisher.
- Install it again.
- Test the program before adding optional plugins or extensions.
For a desktop program, use its own repair option if it provides one. Reinstalling the application remains the definitive fix when that application incorrectly packages or loads its own files.
Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can quarantine a legitimate Windows file or a related WIA extension.
In Windows Security:
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an action involving
WiaExtensionHost64.dll. - Do not restore it unless the copy is in the normal Windows directory and has a valid Microsoft digital signature.
- If verified, use the available restore or Allow on device action.
- Run DISM and SFC afterward.
If the file keeps disappearing, do not repeatedly download replacements. Run a full Microsoft Defender scan, check the antivirus detection details, and consider disk errors or malware.

WIA depends on Windows services, although a stopped service does not by itself prove that the DLL is damaged.

- Type:
services.msc
- Press Enter.
- Find Windows Image Acquisition (WIA).
- Double-click it.
- Set Startup type to Automatic or Manual, according to the existing Windows configuration.
- If the service is stopped, select Start.
- Select Apply, then OK.
Test the scanner or camera again. If the service will not start, return to DISM and SFC, then reinstall the device driver.

regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide a registration procedure such as DllRegisterServer. WiaExtensionHost64.dll is a Windows extension host, not a normal ActiveX control that should be blindly registered.
Avoid running:
regsvr32 WiaExtensionHost64.dll
It may produce an entry-point error and does not repair a missing file, damaged component store, or absent dependency.

A downloaded DLL can have:
- The wrong Windows build
- The wrong architecture
- Missing dependencies
- An invalid or missing signature
- Malware
- A different servicing level from the rest of Windows
Copying it into System32 or an application folder can also change DLL search behavior and hide the real fault. Safe sources are Windows Update, DISM, SFC, official Windows installation media, the device manufacturer’s driver package, and the application publisher’s installer.
If the error still remains
Use these escalation paths in order:

Check Event Viewer
Right-click Start, choose Event Viewer, then inspect Windows Logs > Application around the time of the failure. -
Test another Windows user profile
Create a temporary local account under Settings > Accounts > Other users and test the application there. If it works, the original profile may be damaged.Best Value

Use System Restore
Press Windows key + R, typerstrui.exe, and press Enter. Choose a restore point from before the error. Reinstall Windows without removing personal files
On supported Windows 11 systems, open Settings > System > Recovery > Fix problems using Windows Update > Reinstall now. This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving applications, files, and settings. -
Perform an in-place repair installation
Use official Windows installation media and choose the option to keep personal files and applications. Back up important data first.

Is wiaextensionhost64.dll a Windows file?
Yes. It is associated with Microsoft Windows and the WIA architecture used by imaging applications and device drivers.
Should I put it in SysWOW64 for a 32-bit program?
No. On 64-bit Windows, the expected location for this 64-bit system component is normally C:WindowsSystem32.
