A zombie villager that already exists and has been named with a Minecraft name tag should not naturally despawn. The name tag’s documented effect is that a named mob does not despawn on its own. That protection covers natural despawning only. It does not make the zombie villager immune to death, damage, commands, or other causes of removal.
What a name tag actually prevents
A name tag is the standard item-based way to give a mob a custom name. Applying one also changes how the game handles that mob over time: a named mob is exempt from the normal despawn process that removes idle mobs when a player is far away or when the mob has been loitering in the world. This is the behavior the article is about, and it is the reason players name-tag mobs they want to keep.

Official Bedrock Edition documentation confirms that Zombie Villager belongs to the zombie-type entity family and that it can be named with a name tag. Those pages establish that the mob accepts a name. They do not spell out the full despawn rule in their own text, so the general name-tag behavior is the best-supported statement here.
The conversion caveat
The more important nuance involves how the zombie villager came to exist. A zombie villager is created when a villager is converted by a zombie, so a villager that was named before conversion is a different situation from a zombie villager that is named after it exists.

A historical Mojang bug report describes a named villager that, after converting into a zombie villager, lost its persistence data and could despawn once the player moved far enough away. The report establishes that the problem was raised. It does not establish that it still happens in current versions, and the evidence available here does not tie the report to a specific release.
The practical takeaway is to avoid relying on a name carried over from the pre-conversion villager. Tag the zombie villager after it has become a zombie villager, then confirm the name is visible above it before you leave the area.

Java and Bedrock may not behave identically
Do not assume the rules match across editions. The sources available for this topic support the general name-tag behavior and the conversion caveat, but they do not provide a verified, current Java-versus-Bedrock comparison. Java Edition data also includes a persistence condition linked to a villager’s prior trading history. The exact rule is not documented in a source that can be cited for this article, so treat it as unconfirmed rather than as a reliable factor in your own world.

Keeping a zombie villager you want to cure
Many players name a zombie villager because they plan to cure it back into a villager. The naming step is simple, and the sequence below keeps it from being lost during setup.
- Rename a name tag at an anvil, entering the name you want the mob to carry.
- Hold the named tag, stand next to the zombie villager, and right-click it to apply the tag.
- Confirm the name appears above the mob. If it does not, the tag was not applied, and you should repeat the step before continuing.
- Keep the zombie villager inside a sealed, lit room or pen while you prepare the cure, so that daylight and other hazards do not interfere.
- Prepare a Splash Potion of Weakness and a Golden Apple, then throw the potion at the zombie villager and feed it the apple to start the cure.
Keep a spare name tag in your inventory in case you need to reapply the name after a conversion or a respawn.

What naming does not protect against
- Death: a named zombie villager can still be killed by damage from players, mobs, lava, fall damage, or the environment.
- Burning: naming does not prevent a zombie-type mob from being set alight by sunlight if it is exposed to daylight without shelter.
- Commands: a named mob can be removed with commands such as the kill command or entity-removal commands, regardless of its name.
- World-specific causes: chunk unloading, mob-cap rules on certain servers, and custom world settings can remove mobs in ways the name tag does not override.
Product note
The item you need is the Minecraft name tag, and it is an in-game item. Marketplace listings for physical game-themed items or collectibles are not usable in the game, so a purchase outside the game will not help you name a mob.
