No. An Eye of Ender leads you toward a stronghold, not directly to the End portal room. The portal sits in a separate room inside the stronghold, and whether you find one depends partly on whether you are playing Java Edition or Bedrock Edition.
What an Eye of Ender actually points to
When you throw an Eye of Ender, it flies toward the nearest stronghold and marks its location. According to the Minecraft Wiki’s summary of the Eye of Ender, which the Wiki describes as the behavior since Java 1.7.2, the eye guides you to a stronghold entrance rather than to the portal room itself. A community tutorial describes the target more specifically as the chunk containing the stronghold’s starting spiral staircase. Either way, the eye tells you where the stronghold is. It does not tell you where the portal is inside it.

Finding the portal room inside the stronghold
Once an eye leads you to a stronghold, the search for the portal room begins. Work through the structure in this order:

- Follow the eyes until they point down. A downward-pointing eye means you are over the stronghold. Do not dig straight toward a supposed portal marker; the portal room is somewhere in the connected rooms, not at a fixed spot.
- Enter the stronghold and deal with its monsters. Mojang’s 2021 Minecraft article puts it this way: you need to locate a stronghold using eyes of ender, fight through the monsters inside, and then, if you are lucky, find a room containing a portal frame.
- Search every connected room. Follow corridors and check each room in turn until you find the one with the frames. Keep moving through the structure even after you have reached the target area.
- Confirm you have found a portal frame. The room you want contains End portal frame blocks arranged around a central portal. If you see frames but no portal yet, you have found the right room and only need to fill it.
Java and Bedrock differ on whether a portal exists
The edition you are playing changes the odds of finding a portal at all. Mojang’s 2021 article states the difference directly: in Java Edition every stronghold has an End portal, while in Bedrock Edition only some strongholds do. The table below summarizes what that means in practice.
#1 Best Overall
| Edition | Does every stronghold have an End portal? | What to do if your thorough search finds no portal |
|---|---|---|
| Java Edition | Yes, according to Mojang (2021) | Keep searching the stronghold’s rooms. A missing portal is more likely a search gap than a missing structure. |
| Bedrock Edition | Only some strongholds, according to Mojang (2021) | Leave this stronghold and follow your eyes to another one. |
Mojang’s 2021 article also gives a count of 128 strongholds per world. That figure depends on edition and version, so check it against the game version you are playing before relying on it.
Activating the portal takes eyes too
Finding the portal room does not open the portal. The frame blocks have to be filled with Eyes of Ender before the portal activates, so bring enough eyes to fill every empty frame. Some frames may already contain an eye. Mojang reports that each frame block has a 10% chance of generating with an Eye of Ender already in it, so count the empty frames on arrival rather than assuming you need a full set.

Troubleshooting when no portal appears
- The portal room is not at the entrance. Explore the connected rooms before deciding the stronghold has no portal.
- Check your edition. On Bedrock Edition, a stronghold without a portal is a normal outcome, so move on to the next one.
- Re-follow the eyes. Throw a fresh eye from your current position to confirm the direction of the stronghold you are searching.
- Be cautious with older worlds. Worlds generated under older versions or modified settings may place strongholds differently. This article does not verify behavior across every legacy version, so if your world predates the features described here, test with a fresh world before drawing conclusions.
Bring spare eyes
Each throw carries a risk of loss. A Minecraft Wiki search excerpt reports that an Eye of Ender has a 20% chance to shatter when thrown. That figure comes from a secondary summary rather than an official Mojang statement, so treat it as an estimate. Since you will need eyes both to find the stronghold and to fill the frames, carry more than you think you need.
