As of October 4, 2026, Rockstar’s official game page and pre-order announcement do not announce either feature. That means players should not assume they can play with friends on another platform or carry progress between platforms.
What cross-play and cross-progression mean
- Cross-play lets players on different platforms play together.
- Cross-progression lets a player carry account or game progress between platforms.
They are separate features: a game could support one without the other. Rockstar’s current public materials confirm neither for GTA 6.
What Rockstar has announced about GTA 6
Rockstar’s official GTA 6 page lists PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S as the launch platforms and gives a release date of November 19, 2026. The page does not describe cross-play, cross-progression, or an online mode.
A June 24, 2026 pre-order announcement from Take-Two Interactive for Rockstar Games describes the game this way: “Grand Theft Auto VI features a single-player experience set in the biggest, most immersive evolution of the series yet.” That is the announcement’s description; it does not establish what online content or platform features Rockstar might announce later.

Does GTA V’s progress migration tell us what GTA 6 will do?
No. In 2022, Rockstar announced a one-time migration of existing GTAV Story Mode and GTA Online progress to PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S. That was a GTAV-specific offer for moving to the newer console generation, not a promise of permanent shared progression and not evidence that GTA 6 will support cross-progression. Should you choose a platform based on cross-play?
If playing with friends on another platform is important, do not choose a GTA 6 platform on the assumption that cross-play will work. Wait for Rockstar to explicitly confirm cross-play and name the supported platforms. The same applies if carrying progress between systems matters to you: look for a specific cross-progression announcement rather than inferring it from GTAV’s migration offer.

An independent GTA Intel FAQ updated September 12, 2026 likewise reports that Rockstar has not confirmed cross-play, cross-progression, or an online mode. That is secondary reporting; the current official materials remain the relevant basis for what Rockstar has announced.
