NPC Sims can propose to your active Sim in at least some situations, according to an individual EA Forums bug report. EA’s published descriptions, however, do not define the conditions, ownership requirements, or odds for that to happen, and nothing in them lets you schedule or guarantee it. The one proposal behavior EA documents is different: a neighbor Sim deciding whether to accept a proposal from a Sim they are already dating. Keep those two cases separate, because most confusion about this question comes from treating them as the same thing.
Two different things “NPC proposes” can mean
The phrase covers two situations that work through different systems and carry different levels of evidence.

What EA’s Neighborhood Stories rules say
Neighborhood Stories is the only system in which EA describes NPC marriage-related behavior. Its rules are worth reading closely, because the wording is narrower than many players assume.
- Who counts as a neighbor. EA defines “Neighbor Sims” as most NPC Sims, not only Sims living on the active household’s street.
- How autonomous changes work. For autonomous life changes, the neighbor contacts a Sim in the active household for input before acting. You can have the active Sim say yes, say no, or leave the decision to the neighbor. The resulting change is not necessarily immediate.
- The marriage-related item. EA lists “Accept a marriage proposal, if they are already Boyfriend/Girlfriend of another Sim” among autonomous-only life changes. This describes a neighbor responding to a proposal, not a neighbor proposing to your Sim.
- The limit. In the same list, EA states: “Neighbor Sims will not autonomously get married for now.” The accepted proposal is a listed possibility; the marriage itself is not something neighbors do on their own through this system.
In its March 15, 2022 update, EA said each type of story can be turned on or off individually. If you are watching for neighbor-to-neighbor proposals, check the Neighborhood Stories settings first so you know which story types are active before you judge what the game is doing.

Autonomous proposals to your Sim: what the bug report shows
The only documented case of an NPC proposing to the active Sim is an EA Forums report, marked as verified, describing an autonomous marriage proposal after a date. Its author says the behavior had occurred since acquiring The Sims 4: High School Years and seemed more frequent after Lovestruck.
That report is useful as evidence that the behavior has happened to at least one player. It does not establish that either expansion pack is required, that the behavior is guaranteed, or how often it should occur. Community phrasing such as “Will npcs autonomously propose to marry you?” reflects how players ask the question, not confirmed mechanics.

None of EA’s published material establishes one.
- If you want to test whether neighbor proposals are firing at all, confirm the Neighborhood Stories story types are switched on in settings.
- If a proposal does happen, record the Sims involved, the game version, and the installed packs. That is the information a bug report needs to be useful.
Current game context
EA’s September 22, 2026 update lists PC version 1.128.90.1030, Mac version 1.128.90.1230, and console version 2.39. It makes broad autonomy adjustments, including tuning relationship autonomy for Lovestruck and Growing Together. Those notes do not announce any change to the Neighborhood Stories rule on accepting proposals or on autonomous marriage, so the rule described above remains the current official wording. The update does not show that proposals to the active Sim were newly added.

EA’s July 29, 2024 update adds a safeguard to Neighborhood Stories: related Sims no longer form inappropriate relationships through the Romance Changes story type.
Practical outlook
If you are hoping for a proposal from an NPC to your active Sim, the honest answer is that it is a reported possibility without published rules. If you are asking whether neighbor Sims can accept a proposal from a partner, EA’s Neighborhood Stories description covers that, and it is the part of the feature you can actually plan around.

NPC proposals to the active Sim have been reported, but EA has not documented how they trigger, so do not count on them. The documented behavior is a neighbor Sim accepting a proposal from a Sim they already date, and EA says neighbors do not autonomously get married through Neighborhood Stories.
