Epic currently documents proximity chat as an optional setting for creator-made Creative and UEFN islands. The limited-time Delulu mode used it during weekends in September 2025, but that past appearance is not confirmation of a future return.
Does Fortnite still have proximity chat?
Yes, in a specific form: Epic documents proximity chat for creator-made Fortnite Creative and UEFN islands. Island creators choose whether to enable it and set how far away players can hear one another. It is not a standard Battle Royale setting that players can turn on in every match.

Epic introduced the feature for creator islands on August 6, 2024, describing it as Early Access and writing, “Creators can now add proximity chat to their islands!” It was off by default at launch. Existing player voice-chat settings still apply, including settings managed by a parent or guardian. Epic’s announcement explains the launch and creator controls.
How proximity chat works on supported islands
Proximity chat applies to the Game Channel, not party chat. Its volume depends on distance: creators can set the range at which players can hear each other and how the sound fades as they move apart. Epic’s feature documentation also says a required HUD element identifies active speakers. Voice reporting, muting and blocking remain available.

Why can’t I use proximity chat in Battle Royale?
The feature’s availability depends on the experience. In Creative or UEFN, proximity chat works only when the island creator supports and enables it. In standard Battle Royale, Epic has not announced a general proximity-chat option or a return date in the official materials covered here.
Voice settings can also affect whether you can communicate. Epic distinguishes party chat from game chat: party chat connects party members across supported Epic services, while game chat connects players in the same island instance when that island supports it. Check your communication and parental-control settings if voice chat is unavailable, but changing them cannot enable a feature the island or mode does not offer.

What happened with Delulu?
Delulu, a limited-time Fortnite mode, used proximity voice chat during weekend runs in September 2025. PC Gamer reported on September 23 that a further run was scheduled for September 26–29, 2025, and that Epic said “thousands” of players had already been banned during the first weekend. The report also described in-game voice reporting. Those dates are in the past; Delulu’s use of the feature shows it appeared in a time-limited mode, not that Epic has promised to bring it back. PC Gamer’s September 23, 2025 report covers the mode and enforcement.

How is proximity chat different from party chat?
| Communication option | Where it works | Who controls availability | How players hear one another |
|---|---|---|---|
| Proximity chat | Supported Creative and UEFN islands; used in Delulu during limited 2025 runs | The island creator enables it and configures its range | Game Channel audio varies with distance |
| Party chat | Party members across supported Epic services | Party and player communication settings | Party-wide communication, not distance-based island audio |
| Game chat without proximity chat | The same island instance, if the island supports game chat | Island support and player communication settings | Game Channel connection; proximity-based volume is not established by this option alone |
Epic announced Epic Parties on September 3, 2026, describing voice chat across Fortnite, the Epic Games Store/PC launcher and Epic mobile apps. That announcement concerns party chat; it does not say proximity chat is returning to Battle Royale. Epic’s Epic Parties announcement is not a proximity-chat roadmap.

What is confirmed about a return?
Nothing in the official announcements and documentation cited here confirms a date or plan for general Battle Royale proximity chat. Epic’s status page listed Fortnite and Voice Chat as operational when checked on October 8, 2026, but service health does not indicate which modes or features are available.
So the most accurate answer to “Will Fortnite proximity chat come back?” is: it is possible, but unconfirmed. For now, players can use it on creator islands that enable it; a future Battle Royale return has not been announced.

- An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
- If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
- The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
- Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.
