Sony has not announced whether PS6 will support discs. Former PlayStation executive Shawn Layden argues that the company’s international audience makes a fully discless console harder to justify, because some players cannot depend on reliable high-speed internet. That is a strategic argument, not a Sony hardware announcement. Sony has, however, said production of discs for new PlayStation games will end starting in January 2028.
What Sony’s January 2028 announcement actually changes
Sony Interactive Entertainment’s July 1, 2026 announcement says production of physical game discs for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting in January 2028. Sony says new games after that date will be available through PlayStation Store and retailers in digital formats only. The change does not affect games released, or scheduled to release, before January 2028 in disc format. Sony’s announcement attributes the decision to consumer preferences and the broader entertainment industry shifting toward digital.
This is a plan for producing game discs for new releases. It does not say that existing discs will stop working, that previously announced physical releases will be cancelled, or that a future console will lack a drive. Nor does “available at retailers in digital formats” mean boxed physical games: retailers can sell digital game codes.
Why Layden says PlayStation’s global audience complicates a discless PS6
Shawn Layden, a former PlayStation executive, argues that a digital-only console could leave some customers poorly served. In comments reported by Push Square from an interview with Kiwi Talkz, he pointed to rural areas without high-speed internet, people travelling with consoles, and military bases with limited online access. His point is that a worldwide platform has to account for players whose connectivity makes downloading games unreliable or impractical. Push Square’s report quotes him saying it would be hard for Sony to go fully discless in the next generation.

Layden’s comments are informed opinion, not a statement of current Sony policy. His estimate that PlayStation is the leading platform in “probably 170 countries” is his own formulation, not an independently verified market statistic in the material cited here. The underlying access concern is plausible, but no figure here establishes how many PlayStation customers would be unable to use a discless console.
What a disc can offer when internet access is limited
A physical copy can give a player another way to obtain and install a game when downloading is difficult, and may suit households that prefer to lend, collect, or resell games. But a disc should not be treated as a guarantee of permanent access to every feature: some games require downloads, updates, online services, or account access. A disc drive also adds hardware and potentially cost. An optional drive could give buyers a choice, while a digital-only design would make downloads and the availability of games through digital storefronts more central to access.
Sony’s business is already weighted toward digital sales
Sony’s Corporate Report 2025 gives a FY2024 sales breakdown for its Game & Network Services business: physical software represented 3% of segment sales and digital software 20%. These are shares of business sales, not shares of full-game units sold. The same breakdown lists hardware, add-on content, network services, and other sales separately. Sony’s report also describes a global platform strategy built around software, add-on content, and network services.
The figures help explain why Sony’s commercial direction and Layden’s access concern can coexist. Digital distribution supports the company’s software and services business, and Sony’s own stated reason for ending new-disc production is a shift in consumer preference. That does not establish that digital is equally practical for every customer or that Sony has settled the hardware question for PS6.

In July 2026, Sony CFO Lin Tao acknowledged players’ emotional connection with games in remarks reported by Ars Technica: “Games are loved by many people,” she said, adding that games are connected to people’s fond memories. Ars Technica also reported Sony’s view that the disc itself is not the primary point of differentiation from PC gaming, with curated content, system stability, and affordability cited as console strengths. Those comments help explain Sony’s positioning, but do not resolve concerns about connectivity, preservation, or ownership. Ars Technica’s report covers the earnings-call remarks.
Will PS6 have a disc drive?
That remains unknown. Sony’s announcement about the production of new game discs does not specify whether PS6 will have a built-in drive, support an optional drive, or omit disc support. Ending physical production for new games could reduce the commercial case for a built-in drive, while the access and consumer-choice concerns Layden raises could support keeping some form of disc compatibility. The available statements do not show which consideration will determine Sony’s design.

| Hardware approach | Potential advantages | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| All-digital console | No disc-drive hardware; convenient access to digitally purchased games. | Downloading and digital-store availability matter more; players who value lending, collecting, or resale lose those disc-based options. |
| Console with an integrated or optional drive | Can support disc access for players who want it, alongside digital purchases. | A drive adds hardware and potentially cost; an optional-drive setup depends on compatibility and availability of the accessory. |
These are general trade-offs, not specifications or pricing predictions for PS6. A disc can also have limitations that vary by game, including online requirements or content delivered through updates.

Sony says its new-production cutoff does not affect games released or scheduled to release before January 2028 in disc format. The announcement does not say that existing copies cease to work or that disc playback on current consoles is being withdrawn. If you are buying a physical game, its usefulness still depends on the console model and on any game-specific online or download requirements.

Can I use a disc drive with a PS5 Digital Edition?
Sony lists a separately sold CFI-ZDD1-series PS5 Disc Drive for compatible PS5 Digital Edition model groups CFI-2000 and CFI-7000, as well as PS5 Pro. It supports 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs, Blu-ray discs, and DVDs, and requires an internet connection to pair the drive with the console during setup. Compatibility is model-specific: Sony says the CFI-1000 Digital Edition does not support disc-based games or media. Check your console model and Sony’s official accessories page for local compatibility details. This accessory applies to specified PS5 hardware; it says nothing about PS6 support.
