In a June 2024 interview, AMD said its Ryzen 7 7800X3D would still outperform the then-upcoming standard Ryzen 7 9700X in gaming, but by a smaller margin than in earlier X3D-versus-standard comparisons. That was a directional, launch-era claim—not a published game-by-game benchmark, and not a ranking of every Ryzen 9000 processor available today.
What AMD said about the 7800X3D and 9700X
At Computex 2024, Tom’s Hardware interviewed Donny Woligroski, AMD’s Senior Technical Marketing Manager of Consumer Processors. Asked about gaming performance, Woligroski said: “Is it the fastest in gaming? It’s faster than the competition in our tests. X3D is still the king of the hill, but by a much smaller margin than typically between X3D and non-X3D. So a 7800X3D would, yes, be faster than 9700X, but maybe not by as much as you would expect.” (Tom’s Hardware’s Computex interview report.)

The specific comparison was Ryzen 7 7800X3D versus Ryzen 7 9700X. Woligroski’s remarks establish AMD’s expectation that the older X3D chip would lead in gaming; they do not provide a complete set of independently verified results across games, resolutions, or system configurations.
Why a 16% IPC uplift did not settle the gaming comparison
AMD announced Ryzen 9000 as a Zen 5 desktop family in June 2024 and reported an average 16% improvement in instructions per clock (IPC) over prior Zen 4 processors. AMD’s footnote describes testing conducted as of May 2024 and specifies its test systems and applications. That figure is a generational CPU metric—not a direct gaming result for the 7800X3D against the 9700X. (AMD’s Ryzen 9000 announcement and testing notes.)
#1 Best Overall
- Processor provides dependable and fast execution of tasks with maximum efficiency.Graphics Frequency : 2200 MHZ.Number of CPU Cores : 8. Maximum Operating Temperature (Tjmax) : 89°C.
- Ryzen 7 product line processor for better usability and increased efficiency
- 5 nm process technology for reliable performance with maximum productivity
- Octa-core (8 Core) processor core allows multitasking with great reliability and fast processing speed
- 8 MB L2 plus 96 MB L3 cache memory provides excellent hit rate in short access time enabling improved system performance
IPC does not, on its own, determine game performance. The 7800X3D combines Zen 4 with 3D V-Cache, while the launch-era 9700X is a standard, non-X3D Zen 5 processor. Game behavior depends on more than the CPU’s per-clock work: cache design, the game being tested, resolution, graphics card, memory, firmware, and test method can all affect the result. Productivity gains or an average IPC figure therefore cannot be substituted for a controlled gaming comparison.
What earlier X3D comparisons suggested—and what they did not
Tom’s Hardware characterized the 7800X3D as having about a 30% gaming lead over the fastest standard Ryzen 7000 processor in its 2024 coverage. It also cited an earlier-generation result in which the Ryzen 9 7950X trailed the Ryzen 7 5800X3D by about 8% in its testing. These are historical summaries from particular test suites, not universal margins, and neither number measures the 7800X3D against the 9700X. (Tom’s Hardware’s report.)

Why “Ryzen 9000” needs a time and model qualifier
The interview concerned standard Ryzen 9000 processors before the later X3D models were announced. In January 2025, AMD announced the Ryzen 9 9900X3D and Ryzen 9 9950X3D, both using second-generation 3D V-Cache. Those products make it inaccurate to read the 2024 statement as a claim that Ryzen 7000X3D beats every Ryzen 9000 processor. (AMD’s January 2025 announcement.)

So the headline-era claim is best understood narrowly: AMD expected the 7800X3D to beat the standard 9700X in gaming, with a smaller-than-usual X3D advantage. It says nothing by itself about later Ryzen 9000 X3D-versus-X3D comparisons or every model in either family.

What to compare when choosing a gaming CPU
For a real purchase decision, compare the exact processors and the games and system conditions that matter to you. A useful review should identify its game selection, resolution, graphics card, memory, firmware, and methodology; these details help explain whether a reported margin is relevant to your own setup. The 2024 interview did not publish that full comparison for the 7800X3D and 9700X, so it is not enough on its own to determine which processor is the better buy today.
