The ASUS A8N-SLI Premium is a Socket 939 motherboard for AMD Athlon 64 and Athlon 64 FX processors, built around NVIDIA’s nForce 4 SLI chipset. Its signature refinement was passive heat-pipe cooling for the chipset; it also combines dual-card SLI support with period-era DDR memory and SATA/PATA storage. It can suit a carefully checked vintage PC restoration, but its specifications describe an early-2000s platform—not a modern daily-driver foundation.

What are the ASUS A8N-SLI Premium specs?

ASUS’s A8N-SLI Premium user manual is the primary source for the board’s specifications:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Area Documented specification
Processor socket and chipset Socket 939; NVIDIA nForce 4 SLI
Memory Four 184-pin DIMM sockets; dual-channel unbuffered DDR, ECC or non-ECC, at 400, 333 or 266 MHz; up to 4 GB
Graphics Two PCI Express x16 slots; in SLI mode, each operates at x8 bandwidth
Storage SATA and PATA/Ultra DMA interfaces, with RAID modes documented in the manual
Expansion PCI Express and conventional PCI slots

These are platform specifications, not a guarantee that any particular used board, memory kit, drive, operating system or add-in card will work. The manual identifies the interfaces and supported memory family; it does not establish compatibility with every modern component or software environment.

Which CPU does the A8N-SLI Premium support?

ASUS specifies Socket 939 support for AMD Athlon 64 FX and Athlon 64 processors. For an upgrade, use ASUS’s CPU support table to check the exact processor model and its minimum BIOS version; socket fit alone does not establish support.

  • Boost Your System’s Performance: Increase available memory for smoother multitasking, improved responsiveness and better performance when running memory-intensive applications.
  • Matched Specifically to Your Machine: OFFTEK selects the correct memory configuration for the computer shown in this listing, removing the uncertainty from choosing a compatible upgrade.
  • We Do the Technical Checking for You: There is no need to compare memory speeds, voltages, form factors or other technical details, as the upgrade has been matched to the machine’s supported requirements.
  • Extend the Life of Your Computer: Increasing the available memory can help your existing machine remain productive for longer, offering a cost-effective alternative to replacing the complete system.
  • Quick and Straightforward Upgrade: Memory is normally simple to install and requires no software installation; shut down and disconnect the machine before fitting and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

For example, ASUS lists Socket 939 Opteron 165 and 175 as validated from BIOS 1010.001, and Opteron 170, 180 and 185 from BIOS 1010. These are entries in ASUS’s compatibility table, not a promise that every Socket 939 processor works on every board revision or installed BIOS.

What RAM works with the A8N-SLI Premium?

Look for 184-pin unbuffered DDR memory, not modern DDR generations or DDR2. The manual specifies ECC or non-ECC modules at DDR-400, DDR-333 or DDR-266, with a maximum total capacity of 4 GB across four DIMM sockets.

For a replacement or expansion search, “184-pin DDR400 memory” or “PC3200 DDR memory for Socket 939” is a useful starting description, not a guarantee of a particular kit. Check module capacity and organization, ECC status, and the seller’s return terms against the board and existing memory before buying.

Does the A8N-SLI Premium support SLI?

Yes. The board has two PCI Express x16 slots and supports two compatible graphics cards in SLI; ASUS documents x8 bandwidth per slot when SLI is enabled. For a single graphics card, ASUS identifies the first slot as the intended slot.

HotHardware’s period review describes the board’s SLI setup as configurable through software or BIOS, rather than requiring the user to move a selector card between graphics slots. That is the reviewer’s account of the board’s contemporary operation; check the board’s manual and installed software when configuring a specific restoration.

What made the Premium model distinctive?

Passive chipset cooling

The Premium’s defining design detail is a passive heat-pipe cooling assembly for the nForce 4 chipset. Tom’s Hardware connected the release delay to ASUS’s fanless-product goal, writing: “The reason for the delay had nothing to do with technical difficulties, but rather was related to the company’s promise to deliver a fanless product to market.” (Tom’s Hardware period test.) The design removes a chipset fan from the intended setup, but that says nothing about the condition of an individual board decades later: inspect the heatsinks, heat pipe and mounting before use.

Other period features

PCSTATS’s period review describes its reviewed board as including IEEE 1394a, dual Gigabit networking, 7.1-channel audio and an additional SATA/RAID controller, alongside the heat-pipe arrangement. Those observations provide period-review context; consult ASUS’s manual for documented board specifications and connector details.

Is the A8N-SLI Premium useful for a Socket 939 retro build?

It can be a candidate when the goal is to restore or assemble a Socket 939 PC, especially one intended to use contemporary components and SLI. The most straightforward component path is compatible DDR memory. A CPU upgrade is more conditional because exact processor support depends on ASUS’s model-and-BIOS table. A SATA SSD may be used as a storage-refresh option, but the manual’s SATA documentation does not establish performance, modern operating-system support or compatibility with a particular drive.

  • Confirm the board’s condition and revision, and inspect the passive chipset assembly before powering it.
  • Check the exact CPU and required BIOS against ASUS’s support table before changing processors.
  • Match DDR memory to the specified 184-pin unbuffered type, capacity and ECC status; verify the configuration rather than relying on a broad product label.
  • Treat SATA storage as an interface-level option. Verify the drive, controller behavior and operating-system needs for the system you are restoring.
  • Assess used-part condition and seller claims at the listing level; the board specifications do not establish current stock, prices or component condition.

These checks matter more than chasing a nominally faster part: the A8N-SLI Premium remains bounded by its Socket 939 processor platform, DDR memory and legacy interfaces.
