It is not confirmed whether Squadron 42 will run well on Steam Deck. The game remains unreleased, and no game-specific Steam Deck compatibility result or Deck performance test is established by the available sources. Cloud Imperium Games has announced a planned Q2 2027 release window, but that is a plan, not a guarantee.
Is Squadron 42 Steam Deck Verified?
No confirmed Steam Deck Verified or Playable rating is established yet. Valve’s review considers controller support, legibility, performance, and system support; a game-specific result is more informative than assuming compatibility because the Deck is a PC. See Valve’s Steam Deck compatibility guidance.

RSI’s support article, attributed to Thrysurr-CIG and updated February 4, 2026, said: “Squadron 42 is currently in development and is not available for download.” That is a development and availability statement, not a Deck compatibility verdict. RSI’s Squadron 42 FAQ
When is Squadron 42 expected to release?
Cloud Imperium Games announced a Q2 2027 release window in a statement dated August 27, 2026, reproduced by the Star Citizen Wiki. The reproduced statement attributed to founder and CEO Chris Roberts says the company chose Q2 after reviewing release windows at the start of 2027, and that a specific date would follow. This is an announced target, not a confirmed launch date.

What are the reported PC requirements, and do they tell us about Deck performance?
An October 11, 2026 secondary report described a Steam page for the game and listed minimum PC requirements of Windows 11, 16 GB of RAM, and a DirectX 11.1-compatible graphics card with 8 GB of VRAM. The Steam page could not be independently opened to verify those details, so treat them as reported PC requirements rather than confirmed official specifications.
Those requirements do not establish whether the game will run under SteamOS and Proton, how it will perform on Deck hardware, or whether its controls and text will suit handheld play. Valve’s general Proton guidance explains how Windows games may work on SteamOS, but it cannot determine compatibility for this unreleased game. No independently verified Deck benchmark or performance test is established.

What should you check before playing or buying a Deck for Squadron 42?
- Check the game’s current Steam Deck rating. Look at the Steam page or the game in your Deck library for a Verified or Playable status once one is available. Valve’s review covers controller support, legibility, performance, and system support.
- Look for game-specific Deck tests. Once the game can be played, check sustained frame-rate stability, graphics settings, loading, battery draw, and performance in demanding scenes. Desktop requirements alone cannot answer those questions.
- Check controls and readability. Confirm that the built-in controls work as needed and that menus and text are legible on the Deck’s handheld screen.
- Confirm operating-system and launcher needs. Check whether SteamOS/Proton is supported and whether an external launcher, account sign-in, or other software requirement affects play. The available sources do not establish Squadron 42’s specific launcher behavior or SteamOS support.
- Recheck near release. Consult the current RSI and Steam information for updated dates, requirements, and compatibility details; these can change.
If you are weighing Deck play against another PC, compare the official compatibility status, sustained performance, controls and readability, software requirements, and the cost of using a different PC. No Deck-specific performance comparison is currently supported by the available information.
