Bethesda’s PC requirements for Starfield list an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 Ti as the minimum graphics card and an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 as the recommended one. The GTX 1080 is named in neither list. Because it is a higher-tier card from the same Pascal generation as the 1070 Ti, it is reasonable to expect it to sit at or above the stated minimum. The requirements do not say what resolution, settings or frame rate that minimum delivers, though, and they contain no performance result for the GTX 1080 itself.
What the official requirements list
The table below uses the PC requirements published on Bethesda’s Starfield pages and the Steam store listing. The requirements page does not show a publication date, so treat the values as the current published list rather than a dated benchmark.

Where a GTX 1080 falls against the listed cards
Compared with the minimum: GTX 1070 Ti
The GTX 1080 and GTX 1070 Ti both belong to NVIDIA’s Pascal generation and both carry 8 GB of video memory. The 1080 is the higher-tier model in that line, so on hardware grounds it should not fall below the minimum tier. This is an inference from the product stack, not a tested result. It tells you the card is in the right class, not how it performs in Starfield at any particular setting.
Compared with the recommended tier: RTX 2080
The recommended NVIDIA card is the RTX 2080, which uses NVIDIA’s newer Turing architecture. The GTX 1080 is not listed at that tier, and nothing in the official requirements suggests it meets the recommended configuration. If you want the experience Bethesda describes for the recommended tier, a GTX 1080 should be treated as below that baseline.

Memory is not the separating factor
Because the GTX 1070 Ti, GTX 1080 and RTX 2080 all carry 8 GB of video memory, the card’s VRAM capacity does not explain any difference between the tiers. The gap is in processing power and architecture, so the rest of your system and your settings matter more than the memory figure alone.
What the requirements do not tell you
Bethesda’s requirements list hardware, not outcomes. They do not state the resolution, graphics preset or frame rate that the minimum or recommended hardware is expected to achieve. Nor do they include a GTX 1080 result. Any claim that a GTX 1080 reaches a specific frame rate, such as 60 FPS, would need a benchmark on a comparable system. None is established by the official requirements, so do not treat a “may run” answer as a performance promise.

If you want a realistic target, check a current benchmark that uses a GTX 1080 paired with a CPU and memory setup close to yours, at the resolution you play at. Match the benchmark’s preset to what you intend to use, and note the date, because driver and game updates change results over time.

- Processor: at least an AMD Ryzen 5 2600X or Intel Core i7-6800K. These are older chips, so a GTX 1080 paired with a processor below this level is unlikely to be a balanced setup.
- Memory: 16 GB of RAM is the stated minimum and recommended amount, so 8 GB systems do not meet the published requirements.
- Storage: 125 GB of available space, installed on an SSD. The requirements state “SSD required,” so a hard disk drive does not meet the published minimum regardless of the GPU.
- Operating system: Windows 10 version 21H1 (10.0.19043) or later. Microsoft ended mainstream support for Windows 10 in October 2025, so a Windows 10 machine should be kept on current updates, and a Windows 11 machine is covered by the recommended wording of Windows 10 or 11.
- DirectX: DirectX 12 support, which is standard on current Windows installations with an up-to-date driver.
How to check your own system
- Press Win + R, type winver and press Enter. The About Windows dialog shows your version. Confirm it is 21H1 (build 19043) or newer.
- Press Win + R, type dxdiag and press Enter. On the System tab, note the processor and installed memory. On the Display tab, confirm the card name and display memory.
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc, select the Performance tab, then choose Disk. The type line shows whether the drive is an SSD or an HDD. Use the drive that will hold Starfield.
- Open Settings > System > Storage to see free space on the drive. You need 125 GB available for the game.
If the game installs but runs poorly
- Update the NVIDIA driver from NVIDIA’s driver download page before testing, then restart the PC.
- Verify the game files in Steam by right-clicking Starfield in your Library, choosing Properties > Installed Files, and selecting Verify integrity of game files.
- Lower the output resolution or graphics preset. A GTX 1080 is most likely to need this when targeting the highest settings at 1440p or 4K, since the official requirements do not define those targets.
- Confirm the game is on the SSD. If it is on a hard disk, the published requirement is not met, and performance problems are expected to be part of that mismatch.
- Close background applications that use the GPU or memory, such as capture or recording tools, before judging performance.
If the game fails to start rather than running slowly, the cause is more often a missing requirement, such as the Windows build or DirectX support, than the GPU model itself.
