There is no confirmed 2027 retail launch date for either console. Microsoft says it plans to ship Project Helix alpha hardware to developers beginning in 2027. A separate report describes 2027 as a possible next-Xbox launch target, while noting Microsoft had not committed to a firm window. Sony has not announced a PS6 release date.
Is the next Xbox coming in 2027?
Microsoft has named its next-generation first-party console Project Helix. Xbox says it is in development, built around a custom AMD SoC, and designed to play both Xbox console and PC games, with co-design for the next generation of DirectX and FSR. Those are broad design directions, not a final specification sheet or a release announcement. Xbox Wire’s Project Helix announcement says the company plans to ship alpha versions of the hardware to developers beginning in 2027.
That milestone is for developers, not consumers. Alpha hardware can support development and testing ahead of a retail product; it does not establish when shoppers will be able to buy the console.
There is also a reported basis for the 2027 launch claim. Windows Central reported that AMD CEO Lisa Su said development of Microsoft’s next Xbox, which will use an AMD semi-custom SoC, was progressing to support a 2027 launch. The same report said Microsoft had not fully committed internally to a hard 2027 launch window. Treat that as a reported target, not a confirmed consumer release date.

When is the PS6 coming out?
Sony has not announced a PS6 release date. A May 2026 GameSpot report said the date and price remained undetermined and that Sony had not officially unveiled the console. Sony’s investor-relations archive lists strategy and earnings materials dated May 8, 2026, but that listing does not announce PS6 timing. The available evidence therefore does not support saying that the PS6 is scheduled for 2027.
Does Sony’s 2028 disc policy mean the PS6 is coming in 2027?
No. Sony announced that production of physical discs for all new PlayStation games will stop starting in January 2028, while preserving discs for games released before that date. The announcement concerns new game software distribution, not the launch of a console. Sony’s PlayStation.Blog post says that after the change, new games will be available through the PlayStation Store and retailers in digital formats only. It does not give a PS6 release date.

What the 2027 claim means for console buyers
For now, a 2027 Xbox retail launch is possible but unconfirmed; a 2027 PS6 launch is not established by the available announcements or reporting. There are no confirmed comparable retail prices or full specifications for these future consoles in the sources cited here, so a release-date guess cannot support a meaningful prediction about which system will be better or whether to buy a current-generation console.
When either company announces a retail product, the useful comparisons will be the confirmed release date, price, performance and features, backward compatibility, game library, and ecosystem. Until then, keep the developer alpha milestone, reported Xbox target, and Sony’s unannounced PS6 timing separate.
