Is a detachable PS6 disc drive confirmed?
No. The claim comes from Insider Gaming’s report, which says several sources who were not authorized to discuss Sony’s plans described a detachable drive as part of the next console’s launch strategy. Treat it as a report about Sony’s plans, not an official PS6 specification.
Insider Gaming says one anonymous source characterized Sony as firm on the approach because the PS5 detachable drive met internal targets, while acknowledging the plan could change before launch. That is an attributed account, not a published statistic or a statement from Sony.
What PS6 purchase options does the report describe?
The report outlines three possible configurations. These are reported plans, not products Sony has announced.

The potential flexibility is straightforward: a buyer who does not want a drive at first might be able to add one later. But there is no confirmed PS6 price or compatibility information to compare the upfront or eventual cost.
Can you use a PS5 disc drive on PS6?
No source reviewed confirms that the PS5 drive will work with PS6. Sony’s current detachable accessory, model CFI-ZDD1, is for specified PS5 Digital Edition and PS5 Pro consoles; Sony’s setup guidance identifies the supported PS5 model groups as CFI-2000 and CFI-7000. For the UK listing accessed for this article, Sony lists the CFI-ZDD1 at £69.99; that regional price and availability can change and should not be applied to other markets. Sony says the accessory supports PS5 games and supported PS4 titles on Blu-ray, as well as 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD movie playback. An internet connection is required to pair it with a PS5 during setup. None of those specifications establish what a future PS6 drive would support.

That policy means a detachable PS6 drive, if the report proves accurate, would not by itself show that new PlayStation games will continue to receive disc releases. The drive’s eventual purpose and supported formats remain unannounced.

What to watch for before making a buying decision
- An official Sony hardware announcement: this would establish whether the drive is planned for PS6 and whether it is optional or bundled.
