In a January 9, 2026 update, EA described Rene as a social, collaborative, mobile-first life-simulation experience and said it is not The Sims 4’s successor. EA has said Rene would be free to download when ready and fully open to players, but that does not mean all of its future content will be free.
What did EA say would be free?
In its 2023 recap of Behind The Sims Episode 3, EA’s The Sims team wrote: “Project Rene will be Free to Download.” The statement referred to Project Rene, the name EA used for the project at the time—not to a game officially announced as The Sims 5. EA said players would be able to join, play and explore without a subscription, a core-game purchase or energy mechanics once the project was ready and fully open to players. That promise was conditional: EA did not give a date for when Project Rene would be ready and fully open. The cited announcements do not establish a release date or final launch price for particular future content.
Does free to download mean everything will be free?
No. EA’s 2023 announcement said the team planned to offer content and packs for purchase over time, while also noting that some core systems could be included at no charge. So the announcement described a planned free entry point, not an all-inclusive promise that every later addition would cost nothing.

Is Project Rene The Sims 5?
EA’s newer description makes that label misleading. On January 9, 2026, EA said Project Rene had evolved into a social, collaborative, mobile-first life-simulation game and stated that it “is not the successor to The Sims 4”. EA described Rene as separate from any future deep single-player life-simulation experience, and said it remains committed to single-player life simulation and continuing The Sims 4. That update presents Rene as one experience in a broader family of Sims experiences; it does not announce a numbered sequel or establish that EA has canceled future single-player Sims games. EA said playtesting of Sims products and experiences would continue during 2026, but did not provide a Project Rene launch date.

How this differs from The Sims 4 being free
The Sims 4 has a separate free-base-game offer. EA’s October 2022 FAQ said the base game became free for new players on the PC, Mac, PlayStation and Xbox platforms listed there, beginning October 18, 2022. The same FAQ said downloadable content would remain at its manufacturer’s suggested retail price. That offer applies to The Sims 4, not Project Rene. Read EA’s FAQ about the 2022 base-game change.
