Tariffs have shaped console planning, but as of October 8, 2026, no published source establishes that a tariff caused the Switch 2’s U.S. price increase. What is documented: Nintendo paused U.S. preorders in April 2025 to assess tariff impacts; a temporary 10% import surcharge was proclaimed in February 2026 with a stated end date of July 24, 2026; and the U.S. price of the Switch 2 is reported to rise from $449.99 to $499.99 effective September 1, 2026, with Nintendo of America citing market conditions. Whether a particular console pays duty depends on the current tariff schedule, its country of origin and the facts of its entry, not on the headlines alone.
What Nintendo said about tariffs in 2025
The clearest tariff-linked statement from Nintendo came in April 2025. Nintendo told Tom’s Hardware that U.S. preorders would not start on the planned date of April 9, 2025. The statement read: “Pre-orders for Nintendo Switch 2 in the U.S. will not start April 9, 2025 in order to assess the potential impact of tariffs and evolving market conditions.” It added: “Nintendo will update timing at a later date. The launch date of June 5, 2025 is unchanged.” (Tom’s Hardware, April 4, 2025)

That statement proves tariff uncertainty affected when Nintendo opened U.S. preorders. It says nothing about the price that buyers later faced.

Is a console subject to tariffs today?
The honest answer is conditional. U.S. duty depends on the tariff classification of the product, the country of origin of the specific unit, and any temporary measures in force on the entry date.
The base rate is a starting point
A 2026 CBP ruling (N359605) describes the general video-game-console provision and reports a Free base rate. That base rate does not establish the total duty on a given shipment. Additional measures, origin, classification and entry details can all change what is owed, so the base rate should not be read as “all consoles enter duty-free.”

How to check the rate for a specific console
- Open the USITC archive list at https://www.usitc.gov/harmonized_tariff_information/hts/archive/list and confirm the newest revision.
- Open the current Harmonized Tariff Schedule at https://hts.usitc.gov/ and locate the general video-game-console provision.
- Check the Chapter 99 entries for any temporary measure in force on the date the goods enter the United States.
- Confirm the country of origin for the specific unit from its origin marking or the seller’s import documentation. The company’s headquarters country does not determine origin.
- Compare the result with the current U.S. retail price from the manufacturer or retailer on the day you check.
What remains unresolved
- Country of origin for Switch 2 units now sold in the U.S. Available sources do not establish it.
- Whether tariffs drove the September 2026 price change. The quoted Nintendo of America explanation points to market conditions, not tariffs.
- The tariff share of any console’s retail price. No source quantifies it, so any figure would be a guess.
- Whether the Board of Trade process will reduce rates on consoles. No decision on that point has been published.
Comparing Switch 2 with PlayStation and Xbox
Available reporting does not support a current price comparison among the Switch 2, PlayStation and Xbox. Forecasts of further tariff-driven increases are also not established, so a purchase decision should rest on the price you can verify today. For any side-by-side comparison, record the following for each console:
- The current U.S. retail price, with the retailer or manufacturer and the date checked.
- The country of origin of the unit being sold.
- The applicable tariff treatment at the time of entry, using the HTS steps above.
Comparing prices without these three facts can make one console look more exposed to tariffs than another when the difference is really in origin or in the retailer’s pricing.
