Valheim is no longer in Early Access. It reached its 1.0 full release, which Iron Gate Studio had announced for September 9, 2026. What remains open is not whether the game has launched, but how long Iron Gate will keep updating it and whether it will add more content after 1.0.
How Valheim got to 1.0
The studio announced its release date in June, and the official news index has since listed a post-launch patch. The sequence below uses only dates from Iron Gate’s own pages.

What “finished” means for Valheim
Two different things are being asked when people ask whether Valheim is finished. Each has a different answer.
- Release status: Valheim has left Early Access and is a full 1.0 release. This part is settled.
- Maintenance: Iron Gate says it will keep going with bug fixes and quality-of-life work. It has not said how long that will last.
- New content: Iron Gate has not committed to adding more content. Its FAQ says it is too soon to say.
Leaving Early Access does not mean the studio has stopped working on the game, and the official material does not say that it has. It also does not promise a content schedule. Readers should treat the 1.0 release as settled and the future as open.
What Iron Gate has said about the future
The studio’s general FAQ gives the most context on how it has approached the roadmap. It says it spent five and a half years in Early Access. The original roadmap, published in 2021, was withdrawn so the team could focus on bug fixes and stability. Iron Gate also chose not to publish a new roadmap, saying it wanted to keep development flexible. Its development timeline lists Deep North work from August 2025 through September 2026. The FAQ does not state the year of the five-and-a-half-year figure.

The most direct statement comes from the 1.0 FAQ, dated July 1, 2026, which was written before launch:
“We will continue to improve the game with bugfixes and quality of life stuff, though for exactly how long the game will continue to receive updates is currently too soon to say.”

The quote covers two things. It commits to bug fixes and quality-of-life work, and it leaves the length of support open. It does not say support has ended, and it does not promise any specific content. The October 6 patch shows that post-release bug fixing has started. It does not reveal any major content plans.
Existing saves and new worlds
If you already have a Valheim save, you do not need to start over to keep playing. The 1.0 FAQ says old saves remain usable. It also says new content can appear in older worlds, in areas you have not yet explored. Iron Gate recommends a new playthrough for the best experience, and it says terrain generation for newly added content works properly in unexplored areas.

- Valheim Boar Loves You quote. A perfect design for fans of the best selling Viking game.
- An amazing and unique design which is also perfect as a gift.
- Lightweight, Classic fit, Double-needle sleeve and bottom hem
In practice, that gives you two choices:
- Continue an existing save if you want to keep your current progress. New content may appear in unexplored areas, but the studio does not promise the same experience as a fresh world.
- Start a new world if you want the most complete experience of the 1.0 release, which is the approach Iron Gate recommends.
Platforms and crossplay
The general FAQ lists Windows, Linux, Mac, Xbox One and Series, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch 2 as supported platforms. It also confirms controller support and supports both solo and co-op play. The page does not carry a date, so check the official FAQ if platform availability matters for a specific purchase.
The 1.0 FAQ says crossplay is supported across platforms, but save syncing is limited. Xbox saves can be accessed on PC when you launch through the Microsoft Store. Iron Gate does not offer general cross-platform save synchronization, so a save made on one platform will not automatically appear on another.
