wincredprovider.dll is a Microsoft Windows system component associated with credential providers and Windows authentication. If Windows or an application says wincredprovider.dll is missing, not found, corrupt, or unable to load, repair Windows rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
The correct fix depends on where the error appears. A message during sign-in or startup usually points to Windows component damage, while an error naming a game or application folder may indicate that the application itself is damaged.

Check the file before repairing anything
1. Confirm the path
On 64-bit Windows, the normal system copy is typically:
C:WindowsSystem32wincredprovider.dll
A 32-bit compatibility copy may be under:
C:WindowsSysWOW64wincredprovider.dll
The names are confusing: System32 contains native 64-bit system files on 64-bit Windows, while SysWOW64 contains many 32-bit compatibility files.

Do not assume that every Windows installation has the same file version. The exact path and version depend on the Windows build and architecture.
To check the file:
- Press Windows key + E.
- Select the address bar.
- Enter
C:WindowsSystem32. - Search for
wincredprovider.dll. - Right-click it and choose Properties.
- Check the General, Details, and Digital Signatures tabs.
A legitimate system copy should be in a Windows system directory and should identify Microsoft as its signer in the digital-signature information. A file with the right filename in a Downloads folder, temporary folder, game directory, or unknown application folder needs additional scrutiny.
If Windows Security quarantined the file, open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection history. Do not restore it solely because its filename looks correct. Verify its location and Microsoft signature first. If the file is in the correct system directory but is still detected, repair Windows and run a security scan instead of repeatedly restoring it.

Fix wincredprovider.dll with Windows servicing
2. Install updates and restart
Time needed: 10–30 minutes, depending on pending updates.
An interrupted update or servicing operation can leave a protected Windows component missing or mismatched.
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart when prompted.
- Test the sign-in process or application again.
If Windows reports that updates are pending, complete the restart before running repair commands. A restart can finish component replacement that was waiting for the next boot.
3. Run DISM, then System File Checker
Time needed: 15–45 minutes.
This is the main repair sequence for a missing or damaged copy in System32 or SysWOW64.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open the Start menu.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Run System File Checker as a separate command:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until the scan reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows and test again.
DISM repairs the Windows component store that provides files for system-file repair. SFC then checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies when a valid repair source is available.
A successful result usually says that SFC found corrupt files and successfully repaired them, or that it did not find any integrity violations. If the error remains, run Windows Update again and repeat the sequence after restarting.
Outbyte PC Repair can show what is wrong when manually comparing system problems and repeating SFC/DISM leaves you without a clear diagnosis; its free scan identifies issues, while repair is handled by the full version. It is optional, and Windows servicing remains the supported path for this Microsoft component.
4. Repair the Windows image from another source if DISM fails
Time needed: 30–90 minutes.
DISM may fail when Windows Update cannot provide the required repair files. Microsoft supports using an equivalent Windows installation source with the appropriate /Source option, but the source must match the installed Windows edition and architecture.

Do not point DISM at a random DLL or an unrelated Windows installation.
If the machine is running Windows 11 and the option is available:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts.
This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings where supported. Keep the computer connected to power and back up important files before beginning.

5. Check the SFC log when files cannot be repaired
Time needed: 10–20 minutes.
If SFC reports that it found corrupt files but could not fix some of them:
- Confirm that DISM completed successfully.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Command Prompt as administrator again.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart and test.
For deeper diagnosis, review:
%windir%LogsCBSCBS.log
You can open it by pressing Windows key + R, entering the path, and pressing Enter. The log can be difficult to read, but it may identify protected files that remain damaged.
If repeated DISM and SFC repairs fail, move to System Restore or a Windows repair installation rather than copying a DLL manually.
Repair the application if only one program fails
6. Identify which process is calling the file
Time needed: 5–15 minutes.
The timing and wording of the error are useful:
- During Windows sign-in or immediately after startup: prioritize DISM, SFC, Windows Update, and recovery options.
- When launching one application: inspect that application’s installation, launcher, and security history.
- From an application folder: do not copy the Windows DLL into that folder. Repair the application that produced the message.
- Across several applications: treat it as a Windows component or system-integrity problem.
If the error names an application directory, use its official repair method:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected program.
- Open its menu and choose Advanced options, if shown.
- Select Repair.
For older desktop software:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs > Programs and Features.
- Select the application.
- Choose Repair or Change, if available.
- Follow the installer prompts.
For a game launcher, use its built-in Verify, Repair, or equivalent file-checking command. If repair does not help, uninstall the affected application, restart, and reinstall it from the developer’s official installer. This is the definitive fix when the missing file belongs to that application rather than Windows.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDo not install Visual C++ Redistributable merely because a DLL error appears. wincredprovider.dll is not identified as a Visual C++ runtime file. Install a runtime only when the affected application’s official requirements specifically call for it.
Check security software and system architecture
7. Review quarantine and scan Windows
Time needed: 15–45 minutes.
A false positive, malware removal, or unauthorized system-file replacement can produce the same message.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Open Protection history.
- Review detections involving
wincredprovider.dll. - Note the detected file path and action.
- Run a Quick scan.
- If the result is suspicious or the problem continues, run a deeper scan.
Restore a quarantined file only if its path and Microsoft digital signature are verified. If Windows Security continues detecting it, leave it quarantined and repair Windows.
Also confirm that a mismatched architecture is not being substituted. A 32-bit DLL is not a safe replacement for a 64-bit system component, and the reverse is also true. Windows servicing should restore the correct architecture-specific copy.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
8. Update drivers only when the symptoms indicate a broader system problem
Time needed: 15–60 minutes.
Drivers do not normally supply wincredprovider.dll, so Device Manager is not the first repair for this file. Use it when the DLL error began alongside failed hardware, login-device problems, display instability, or other system-wide symptoms.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if Windows installs an update.
Outbyte Driver Updater can identify stale drivers when manually checking many Device Manager categories is impractical; its free scan shows the detected issues, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional and does not replace Windows component repair.
Do not enable or disable random Windows Features for this error. Credential providers are not repaired by turning on an unrelated feature. Use Windows Features only when the failing application’s own documentation explicitly requires a particular optional Windows component.

regsvr32 wincredprovider.dll
Do not use regsvr32 as a routine response to “DLL missing” or “could not be loaded.” It is appropriate only when the software vendor specifically instructs you to register that particular DLL and confirms that it supports self-registration.
Do not download wincredprovider.dll manually
Random DLL download sites can provide the wrong Windows build, architecture, language, or a modified file containing malware. Copying it into System32, SysWOW64, or a game directory can also hide the underlying component or application problem.
Use these supported sources instead:
- Windows Update
- DISM and SFC
- Windows 11 recovery reinstallation, where available
- System Restore
- An in-place Windows repair installation
- The affected application’s official installer or repair function
Never whitelist an unknown DLL simply because its filename matches the error.
Causes and the correct repair path
| Likely cause | Best next step |
|---|---|
| Corrupted or missing Windows component | Run DISM, then SFC |
| Interrupted update or upgrade | Complete Windows Update, restart, then repeat DISM and SFC |
| Antivirus quarantine | Verify path and signature, scan, then repair Windows |
| Damaged application files | Use application repair, launcher verification, or reinstall |
| Wrong architecture or mismatched binary | Restore the file through Windows servicing |
| Malware or unauthorized replacement | Scan Windows, then repair system files |
| Wider profile or disk corruption | Use System Restore or Windows recovery |
Last-resort recovery options
9. Use System Restore
Time needed: 20–60 minutes.
Use System Restore when the problem began recently and a restore point predates it.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the failure.
- Select Next > Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore rolls back system files and settings without normally affecting personal files, but recently installed applications or updates may be removed. Back up important data first.
10. Perform an in-place repair or clean installation
Time needed: 1–3 hours.
If Windows will not boot, use the Windows Recovery Environment for Startup Repair, System Restore, or other recovery options. If Windows still works but component repair repeatedly fails, an in-place repair installation can replace Windows files while preserving personal data and, where supported, applications.
A clean installation should be the final option when repair installation and recovery methods do not resolve broader corruption. Back up important files, confirm access to needed accounts and installers, and use official Windows installation media.
FAQ
Is wincredprovider.dll safe?
It is a genuine Microsoft Windows component when it is located in the expected Windows system directory and carries a valid Microsoft digital signature. The filename alone does not prove authenticity.
Is it a Visual C++ Redistributable file?
No. Installing Visual C++ Redistributable is not the normal fix for this Windows credential-provider component.
Why does the error say “not designed to run on Windows”?
That wording commonly indicates that the calling program could not load the binary because it is damaged, incompatible, the wrong architecture, or missing a required dependency. Repair Windows or the affected application according to the path named in the error.
Should I copy the file from another computer?
No. Different Windows builds and architectures can require different component copies. Use Windows Update, DISM, and SFC instead.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →What if the error appears only in one game?
Repair or verify that game first, then reinstall it from its official installer if necessary. If the message points to System32 or SysWOW64, repair Windows as well.
Can I disable Windows Features or reinstall DirectX, .NET, or drivers?
Not as a default fix. Those components should be addressed only when the affected application specifically requires them or when separate symptoms point to that dependency.
