If Windows says it is missing, damaged, or could not be loaded, restore the Pashto input feature through Windows rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
The file contains the mapping tables Windows uses for the Pashto keyboard layout. Microsoft identifies the layout with keyboard identifier 00000463, and Windows loads keyboard-layout DLLs through its input system when that layout is needed. Where Windows normally stores kbdpash.dll
The normal 64-bit Windows location is:
%windir%System32kbdpash.dll
On 64-bit Windows, the 32-bit system-file view may use:
%windir%SysWOW64kbdpash.dll
These folders are not interchangeable. Windows uses WOW64 redirection to keep 32-bit and 64-bit system components separate, as explained in Microsoft’s file-system redirector documentation.

The exact file version depends on your Windows release, servicing level, and architecture. Do not use a file size or version from another computer as a universal standard.
Fix 1: Reinstall the Pashto keyboard layout
Time needed: 5–10 minutes, plus a restart if requested
This is the most targeted repair when the error appears during sign-in, language switching, typing, or after changing language settings.
Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Time & language.
- Select Language & region.
- Under Preferred languages, select Add a language.
- Search for Pashto.
- Select the appropriate Pashto language entry and choose Next.
- Install the language features. A complete display-language change is not necessarily required just to use a keyboard layout.
- Select the Pashto entry under Preferred languages.
- Choose Language options.
- Under Keyboards, select Add a keyboard.
- Choose the Pashto keyboard layout.
Restart Windows, then test the layout from the language switcher on the taskbar.
Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Time & Language.
- Select Language.
- Choose Add a preferred language.
- Search for and install Pashto.
- Select Pashto and choose Options.
- Under Keyboards, select Add a keyboard.
- Select the Pashto layout.
If Pashto is already installed, remove it before adding it again:
- Open the same language settings page.
- Select Pashto.
- Choose Remove.
- Restart Windows.
- Add Pashto again.
- Restart once more if Windows requests it.
How to tell whether it worked
The error should stop appearing when Windows starts or when you switch input languages. The Pashto layout should also appear in the taskbar language selector.
If Pashto is not needed, removing the unused layout may be the correct fix. A stale keyboard-layout registration can continue requesting kbdpash.dll even after the underlying language feature has been removed incompletely.

Time needed: 10–30 minutes, depending on pending updates
Windows Update can restore language components and provide the source files used by Windows repair tools.
- Open Start > Settings.
- In Windows 11, select Windows Update.
- In Windows 10, select Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart Windows, even if the update process does not insist on it.
- Test Pashto input again.
If Windows reports that updates failed, record the error and continue with DISM and SFC. Do not repeatedly download individual DLL files as a substitute for servicing Windows.

Fix 3: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15–45 minutes
Use these tools when the file is absent from the Windows directory, Windows reports that it is corrupted, or other protected system files are also malfunctioning.

- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
Wait for DISM to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Run DISM before SFC. DISM repairs the Windows component source that SFC may need to replace damaged protected files. Microsoft documents this sequence in its System File Checker guidance.
Restart Windows after both commands complete.
Understanding the result
SFC may report one of these outcomes:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations. Windows did not find protected-file corruption.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them. Restart and test the keyboard layout.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Run DISM again after installing updates, then retry SFC.
If DISM cannot obtain repair files through Windows Update, Microsoft documents using a matching repair source:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
C:RepairSourceWindows is only an example. Use a repair source matching your installed Windows edition, language, architecture, and build. Do not point DISM at an unrelated ISO or invented folder.
Manually tracking component versions and repeating DISM and SFC can be tedious when the underlying corruption is unclear. Time needed: 5 minutes
First determine whether Windows can find the file in its own directories.
Open Command Prompt and run:
where /r "%windir%" kbdpash.dll
A result under %windir%System32 or the appropriate Windows system-file view is more credible than a copy found in a temporary folder, a download directory, or an application directory.
To inspect the file:
- Open File Explorer.
- Browse to the reported location.
- Right-click
kbdpash.dll. - Select Properties.
- Open the Details tab.
- Review the description, product, publisher, and version fields.
- Open Digital Signatures and check for a valid Microsoft signature.
The expected identity is a Microsoft Windows keyboard-layout component for Pashto (Afghanistan). A missing signature, an unexpected location, or a mismatched file identity is a reason to repair Windows rather than trust that copy.

A third-party hash list is not an official Microsoft verification standard, so do not use one to approve an arbitrary download.
Fix 5: Check Windows Security quarantine
Time needed: 5–20 minutes
Antivirus software can remove or quarantine a file after a detection. The filename alone does not prove that the file is malicious or genuine.

- Search for Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving the file or its original Windows path.
- Expand the event and review the detection details.
Restore the file only if all of the following are true:
- The original path was a normal Windows directory.
- The file is digitally signed by Microsoft.
- The detection appears to be a confirmed false positive.
- Your security software is updated.
If the file is unsigned, located in an application or temporary directory, or identified as malicious, do not restore it. Run a full scan, and use an offline scan if malware is suspected. Repair the Windows component through Settings, Windows Update, DISM, and SFC instead.
Fix 6: Do not mix System32 and SysWOW64
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
A manually copied DLL can produce an error even when the filename is correct. A 32-bit file and a 64-bit file are not automatically interchangeable, and the folder names do not mean what their names may suggest.
System32is the native system-directory view on 64-bit Windows.SysWOW64contains the 32-bit system-directory view used by WOW64.
Do not copy a file from one folder to the other. Do not replace kbdpash.dll with a copy from another computer unless you are performing an advanced recovery procedure and have verified the Windows edition, language, architecture, build, signature, permissions, and servicing state.
The safe repair is to remove an unauthorized replacement if appropriate, reinstall the Pashto keyboard feature, and run DISM followed by SFC.
Fix 7: Check the affected Windows user profile
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
If the file exists, is Microsoft-signed, and the error appears only for one Windows account, the problem may be a stale keyboard-layout registration or damaged profile.

- Create or use another Windows user account.
- Sign in to that account.
- Add the Pashto keyboard layout.
- Test language switching and typing.
- Compare the result with the affected account.
If the new profile works, remove and re-add Pashto in the original account. If the error remains limited to that profile, migrate personal data to the working profile instead of replacing system DLLs.
Fix 8: Repair an application only if it is the trigger
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
kbdpash.dll is a Windows input-layout component, so an application reinstall is not normally the first repair. If the message appears only when one program starts, inspect that program’s installation.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select its menu button.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Test the application.
If Repair is unavailable or ineffective, uninstall and reinstall the application from its official vendor source. For a game, use the launcher’s built-in verification or integrity-check feature.
Do not assume that the application owns kbdpash.dll. Check whether it contains a private copy in its installation directory. A private, unsigned copy may have been added incorrectly and should not be treated as the Windows component.

Drivers and regsvr32
kbdpash.dll is not a hardware driver. Reinstalling a keyboard driver in Device Manager is unlikely to restore this layout DLL. If the physical keyboard itself has problems after Windows repair, update drivers through:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Keyboards.
- Right-click the relevant device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
Avoid removing the device unless you understand the effect on your input hardware. Guessing which of several drivers is outdated can take longer than checking each device and Windows Update. Do not run:
regsvr32 kbdpash.dll
Keyboard-layout DLLs are loaded by the Windows input system, not normally registered as COM or ActiveX components. regsvr32 may return an error stating that DllRegisterServer was not found, which does not indicate that the keyboard layout needs a different registration command.

When to escalate
If language reinstall, Windows Update, DISM, and SFC all fail, use a broader Windows recovery path.

On Windows 11, where available:
- Open Settings > System > Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the on-screen instructions.
Microsoft states that this option reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings. System Restore is another option if the issue began after a recent update or software change. For suspected malware, scan before restoring files and use Microsoft’s Windows recovery options.

Is kbdpash.dll safe?
The genuine file is a Microsoft Windows keyboard-layout component for Pashto (Afghanistan). Verify the path, file properties, and Microsoft digital signature before trusting a particular copy.
Should I download kbdpash.dll manually?
No. Random DLL downloads can contain malware, use the wrong Windows build or architecture, and leave permissions or component-store problems unresolved. Restore it through the Pashto language feature, Windows Update, DISM, or SFC.
Why does Windows say “specified module could not be found” when the file exists?
