Reviewers consistently praise its look, atmosphere, and island exploration, but many find the survival loop repetitive and the sailing and combat uneven. Aggregate scores for the game sit in the low 60s on Metacritic and roughly 65 on the Epic Games Store listing, which places it in “mixed or average” territory rather than in either camp.
Search results also surface an unrelated 2026 game that uses the Windbound name. This article covers the 2020 survival adventure developed by 5 Lives Studios and published by Deep Silver, which Metacritic lists on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch with an initial release date of August 28, 2020.

What critics are scoring
In Windbound you play Kara, a shipwreck survivor on the Forbidden Islands. Each island is a source of scarce materials. You gather them, craft tools and weapons, hunt, fend off threats, and build or upgrade a boat that lets you reach the next island. Steam’s store description treats the boat as a central companion and ties resource scarcity directly to how far you can travel. Reviewers describe the result as a blend of survival mechanics, exploration, a personal narrative, and roguelike elements.
Those elements are the source of both the praise and the complaints, so it helps to know what each score actually measures. Metacritic and OpenCritic-style averages combine critic reviews, while Steam’s percentage reflects only player reviews. The figures below are not interchangeable.

The scores, by platform and aggregator
| Source | Platform | Score | Basis | Label or note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Metacritic | PC | 60 Metascore | 7 critic reviews | “Mixed or Average” |
| Metacritic | Nintendo Switch | 63 Metascore | 8 critic reviews | “Mixed or Average” |

All of these snapshots were taken in 2026, and the exact check dates are not given in the sources behind them. Metacritic and Steam figures change as reviews are added, so treat the numbers as a point-in-time reading. The Switch and PC Metacritic scores are based on different review counts and should not be read as proof that one version is the better game.
What reviewers consistently praise
- Visual style and atmosphere. The art direction and mood are the most consistently cited strengths across outlets.
- Island exploration and discovery. Some reviewers found the relaxed pace and the sense of finding something new on each island rewarding.
- Sailing and crafting appeal. The idea of building and steering a boat, and then turning gathered materials into gear, is the hook that keeps several critics engaged.
- Open-ended progression. Nintendo Life’s Switch review singles out the open-ended progression and the pleasing art style as the game’s strongest points.
What reviewers push back on
- Repetition. This is the most frequent reservation. Nintendo Life says repetition holds the game back, and some reviewers found the repeated island searches tedious.
- Combat. Several critics describe combat as shallow or unsatisfying.
- Sailing. NintendoWorldReport praised how the systems work together but said sailing could be exasperating. Others found the boat slow or awkward to handle.
- Uneven pacing. Reviewers who liked the loop still said the survival cycle can stall, while those who did not care for it felt it dragged.
Representative lines from the reviews show the range. IGN’s PC review concludes: “Neither compelling as a survival simulation nor captivating as a story-based experience, Windbound is all at sea.” NintendoWorldReport, reviewing the Switch version, describes exploration feeding crafting and sailing in a calmer rhythm. These are short excerpts attributed to their outlets; the sources do not name the individual writers.

Is Windbound worth playing?
The critical consensus is that Windbound is worth a look if you want a survival game with a strong sense of place, and less so if you need a deep combat system or a tightly paced story. Reviewers who recommend it tend to frame it as a relaxed exploration experience with survival pressure rather than a survival simulation in its own right. Reviewers who did not recommend it cite the same things, but as flaws rather than texture: the loop repeats, and the boat makes travel slower than it needs to be.

Is it good on Switch?
The Switch version carries a 63 Metascore from 8 critic reviews, which is slightly higher than the 60 from 7 reviews on PC, both labeled “Mixed or Average.” The gap is too small, and the review counts too low, to conclude that the Switch version is the stronger release. The reviews that discuss the Switch version raise the same themes as the PC coverage: appealing art and open-ended progression, with repetition and sailing friction holding it back. If you are choosing between platforms, the platform’s control feel and your tolerance for sailing friction matter more than the aggregate difference.
Is it too repetitive?
Critics say yes more often than not, and the reasons are specific. The survival loop asks you to revisit islands to gather materials, and some reviewers felt that the effort did not produce enough new variation. The reviews that did find the loop engaging tended to treat each island as a fresh discovery, while those who found it repetitive treated the same loop as a chore. Whether you find it tiresome depends mostly on whether you enjoy the search itself.
Survival game or exploration game?
Windbound is both, and critics tend to describe the exploration as the part that holds up better. The survival systems supply the pressure and the reasons to move, while the islands, the sailing, and the sense of discovery are where the most positive reviews land. If you want a survival game with strict stakes, critics suggest it will feel lighter than you expect. If you want to wander and find things, the survival layer is the cost of admission.

Player reception
On Steam, player reviews showed 60% positive from 1,029 user reviews in 2026. This figure reflects Steam users only, and it should not be blended with the Metacritic critic scores or taken as a reading of console owners’ opinions. It is a useful signal that players are split, which matches the critics.
