Windows 11 24H2 Auto HDR Bug: Why Game Colors Look Wrong and How to Fix It

Windows 11 24H2 had a confirmed Auto HDR oversaturation bug, but not every HDR crash or color problem has the same cause. Here’s how to diagnose and fix it.

Yes—Windows 11 24H2 had a real, Microsoft-confirmed Auto HDR bug that made some games look oversaturated. Microsoft documented a fix in Release Preview build 26100.3025 (KB5050094) on January 21, 2025. However, that confirmation does not mean every crash, stutter, black screen, or HDR color problem is caused by one universal Auto HDR defect.

The quickest diagnosis is to compare the same game and scene with Auto HDR enabled and disabled, then update Windows and your graphics driver. If disabling Auto HDR fixes the problem, leave it off for that game or use the game’s native HDR mode. If the problem remains, investigate HDR configuration, color profiles, overlays, display mode, drivers, or the game itself.

When game colors look wrong after an update, Outbyte PC Repair can scan Windows settings and system elements for related configuration problems.

What the Windows 11 24H2 Auto HDR bug actually was

Auto HDR is a Windows feature that expands the apparent brightness and color range of supported SDR games on an HDR-capable display. It is primarily relevant to compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games running in windowed or borderless modes through Windows’ Optimizations for windowed games.

It is not the same as a game’s native HDR mode, HDR10 or Dolby Vision output, NVIDIA RTX HDR, AMD driver-level processing, an HDR monitor preset, Windows HDR Calibration, or Auto Color Management.

Microsoft’s January 21, 2025 Release Preview notes for Windows 11 build 26100.3025, associated with KB5050094, specifically identified and fixed an issue in which some games appeared oversaturated when Auto HDR was used. The note was published for the Release Preview Channel, so it should not be read as proof that every stable Windows installation received the fix on that date.

The documented symptom was oversaturation—not a blanket Microsoft confirmation that Auto HDR causes all game crashes or system instability. Reports of crashes, flicker, stuttering, black screens, failed Alt-Tab behavior, or HDR switching off may involve other parts of the graphics stack.

Why “stability” can mean several different problems

When a game becomes unreliable after enabling HDR, identify the exact failure:

  • Crash on launch or during play: the game, anti-cheat software, overlay, driver, or Windows graphics stack may be involved.
  • Flicker, black screens, or failed Alt-Tab: test fullscreen and borderless presentation, overlays, refresh rates, and the GPU driver.
  • Stutter or changed frame pacing: windowed-game optimizations, variable refresh rate, overlays, or a multi-monitor setup may be contributing.
  • HDR immediately turns off: check the Windows build, display connection, driver, and monitor behavior rather than assuming Auto HDR is responsible.
  • Windows Settings or graphics options crash: this is a Windows graphics-settings problem, not proof that the game’s Auto HDR conversion is defective.
  • Color profile disappears after sleep: this points toward color management and profile restoration.

Microsoft’s DirectX team notes that Auto HDR can have application-specific compatibility problems. Windows may disable Auto HDR for known-problematic applications, and supported versions provide a per-application Don’t use Auto HDR control. Later Windows 11 preview notes separately discussed color profiles, Dolby Vision, HDR behavior, graphics settings, and overlay performance. Those are related diagnostic areas, not necessarily one bug.

Check whether your PC is affected

1. Record the exact Windows build

  1. Press Win + R.
  2. Type winver and press Enter.
  3. Record the Windows version and OS build, such as 24H2 and 26100.x.

Windows 11 24H2 uses the 26100 build series. As of August 18, 2026, Microsoft identifies Windows 11 25H2 as the latest Windows 11 version, while 24H2 Home and Pro remain scheduled for updates through October 13, 2026. Check your installed version rather than assuming that every current Windows 11 PC is still on 24H2. Microsoft’s 24H2 release-health page is the appropriate place to check current issue and support information.

2. Identify the presentation path

Before changing settings, note whether the game is using:

  • SDR with Auto HDR;
  • the game’s own native HDR mode;
  • exclusive fullscreen, borderless fullscreen, or windowed mode;
  • one display or multiple displays with different refresh rates and HDR capabilities.

Also record your GPU brand and driver version, monitor model and firmware, connection type (DisplayPort or HDMI), active ICC color profile, Auto Color Management status, and any overlays or capture tools. Problems that began immediately after a Windows update, driver update, monitor change, or cable change are especially useful clues.

Fastest fix: disable Auto HDR for the affected game

Do not disable all of Windows HDR first if only one title is affected. Use the per-game control:

  1. Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
  2. Select the game’s executable. If it is missing, add the actual game executable rather than only its launcher.
  3. Select Options.
  4. Choose Don’t use Auto HDR.
  5. Select Save.
  6. Close and restart the game completely.

The restart is important: Microsoft’s instructions require restarting the game after changing Auto HDR or windowed-game optimization settings.

To turn Auto HDR off globally, open Settings > System > Display > HDR, switch Auto HDR off, and restart the affected game. The exact labels can vary slightly between Windows builds.

Use a controlled A/B test

A proper comparison is more reliable than judging a screenshot or changing several options at once:

  1. Use the same display, cable, game mode, brightness settings, and in-game scene.
  2. Reproduce the oversaturation, flicker, stutter, or crash with Auto HDR enabled.
  3. Disable Auto HDR only for that game.
  4. Restart the game and repeat the test.
  5. Compare colors, shadow detail, highlight brightness, frame pacing, Alt-Tab behavior, and crash behavior.
  6. Update Windows and the GPU driver, then repeat the comparison.

If the issue disappears only when Auto HDR is disabled, that is strong practical evidence that the feature or its interaction with that title is involved. It does not prove the original 24H2 bug remains present on your build; the cause may be a newer game, driver, display mode, or compatibility issue.

Update Windows before using drastic workarounds

Open Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates, install available updates, and restart. Run winver again afterward to confirm the build changed.

Release Preview fixes are evidence of Microsoft’s development and servicing work, but Release Preview availability is not identical to immediate availability on every production PC. Verify the installed build and cumulative update instead of relying only on KB5050094.

Known Issue Rollback policies are generally intended for managed environments. Do not install a KIR package or change related policies unless Microsoft specifically identifies your issue and supplies instructions for your device.

Update or roll back the graphics driver

Use the manufacturer’s official channel:

Install a current driver first. If the issue began immediately after a driver update and Auto HDR worked previously, testing the previous stable driver can help establish causation. Do not assume a particular driver version is universally affected without matching it to your GPU and game.

If disabling Auto HDR does not fix the colors

Test native HDR separately

If the game has a native HDR mode, disable Auto HDR and test the game’s own HDR implementation. Do not run native HDR and Auto HDR together. Native HDR is not automatically better: some games provide useful paper-white, black-level, peak-luminance, or brightness controls, while others have poor tone mapping.

If native HDR also looks wrong, investigate the game’s calibration, display tone mapping, output range, ICC profile, and GPU settings.

Check Windows and monitor HDR configuration

Windows HDR being available does not guarantee that a display has good HDR tone mapping. Check:

  • the monitor’s HDR picture mode and on-screen controls;
  • whether the display is genuinely HDR-capable and operating in HDR10 as expected;
  • whether Dolby Vision is taking precedence or changing brightness behavior;
  • full versus limited RGB range;
  • 8-bit versus 10-bit output configuration where supported;
  • the GPU driver’s color settings;
  • active ICC profiles and Auto Color Management;
  • monitor firmware, cable, and port compatibility.

Microsoft has documented separate 24H2 preview issues involving color profiles, Dolby Vision, and HDR behavior. A color problem across every game and application is more likely to involve this broader configuration than one title’s Auto HDR conversion.

If the game crashes, stutters, flickers, or goes black

Disable overlays temporarily

Turn off overlays one at a time and retest:

  • Xbox Game Bar;
  • Discord overlay;
  • Steam overlay;
  • NVIDIA or AMD overlay;
  • MSI Afterburner/RivaTuner overlay;
  • third-party capture, ReShade, frame-generation, or monitoring tools.

This is particularly important when the symptom is a crash, black screen, failed Alt-Tab, or stutter rather than simple oversaturation.

Compare display modes

Test exclusive fullscreen, borderless fullscreen, and windowed mode separately. Microsoft says Optimizations for windowed games affects compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games in windowed and borderless modes and can interact with Auto HDR and variable refresh rate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reduce the number of variables

For troubleshooting, temporarily disconnect a second monitor or test with only the HDR display connected. Different refresh rates, HDR capabilities, and overlay behavior across multiple displays can complicate frame pacing and presentation. Also test another DisplayPort or HDMI port and, where possible, a known-good cable. These steps do not prove the monitor is defective; they isolate the display path.

Gather evidence instead of editing the registry

Check Reliability Monitor for the time and name of the game crash, and use Event Viewer > Windows Logs > System to look for display-driver resets or errors. A VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE or display-driver reset points toward the driver or graphics stack, not necessarily Auto HDR.

Avoid registry edits as a first-line fix. They are harder to audit, can vary by game, and are less useful than the supported per-game Graphics setting unless a title-specific, well-documented source calls for one.

Calibrate HDR after the software issue is stable

Calibration can improve tone mapping and the balance between SDR and HDR content, but it cannot repair a Windows regression, crashing game, broken driver, or faulty monitor firmware.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Install the Windows HDR Calibration app from the Microsoft Store.
  2. Select the HDR-capable display you want to calibrate.
  3. Adjust the pattern for the darkest visible detail.
  4. Adjust the brightest visible detail.
  5. Set the maximum brightness pattern appropriately.
  6. Adjust the SDR-content brightness slider if SDR desktop content looks too dim or bright.
  7. Retest the game.

Microsoft says the app uses three test patterns recommended by the HDR Gaming Interest Group and lets users customize HDR and SDR appearance. Calibrate only after isolating the software problem; otherwise calibration can obscure the original comparison.

Should you disable HDR entirely?

Situation Recommended action
One SDR game is oversaturated Disable Auto HDR for that game.
The game has good native HDR Disable Auto HDR and use the game’s native HDR mode.
Every game looks wrong Investigate Windows, display, driver, color-profile, and monitor settings.
The game crashes only with Auto HDR Leave Auto HDR off for that title, disable overlays, and update or test-rollback the driver.
HDR looks good and remains stable Keep Auto HDR enabled.
The display is not HDR-capable or has poor HDR behavior Use SDR rather than forcing HDR.

When not to replace your monitor or GPU

Do not buy new hardware as the first response when:

  • the issue began immediately after a Windows update;
  • disabling Auto HDR resolves it;
  • the display works correctly with another PC or console;
  • SDR games look correct when Windows HDR is disabled;
  • only one game is affected;
  • the behavior changes when overlays or color-management settings are disabled.

Hardware becomes a more credible suspect when the problem affects every HDR application, survives a clean software configuration, follows the monitor across systems, or coincides with cable, port, firmware, or physical display faults.

A practical decision tree

  1. Only Auto HDR causes oversaturation: update Windows, then disable Auto HDR per game if necessary.
  2. Only Auto HDR causes crashes or stutter: disable it, turn off overlays, test exclusive fullscreen, and update or roll back the GPU driver.
  3. Colors are wrong everywhere: check HDR10/Dolby Vision mode, RGB range, ICC profiles, Auto Color Management, monitor settings, and driver output.
  4. The problem persists with Auto HDR off: stop treating it as an Auto HDR bug.
  5. Only one game is affected: check the game’s patches, native HDR implementation, anti-cheat behavior, and title-specific compatibility information.
  6. Every HDR application is affected: investigate the Windows build, display firmware, GPU driver, cable, port, and display mode.
