Xbox Full Screen Experience is the best official way to make a Windows gaming handheld feel more like a console—but it is still a Windows gaming shell, not a new Xbox operating system. It gives supported Windows 11 handhelds a controller-friendly, full-screen home screen, can launch automatically at sign-in, and makes a docked device easier to use from a sofa. You still retain access to the Windows desktop, multiple PC storefronts, mods, utilities, and ordinary PC troubleshooting.
What Xbox Full Screen Experience actually is
Microsoft uses both Xbox mode and Xbox Full Screen Experience for this feature family. It is a Windows gaming mode that displays a selected gaming home app—currently centered on the Xbox app—in a full-screen, gamepad-oriented interface.

That makes it different from simply maximizing the Xbox app. When Xbox mode is configured to start automatically, Windows also limits certain background processes while gaming. Microsoft describes this as a way to reduce overhead, but it does not publish a universal frame-rate or battery-life improvement. Results depend on the handheld, power mode, drivers, game, resolution, and background software.
- A gaming home app acts as the launcher.
- Games and apps are presented full screen where possible.
- Controller navigation replaces much of the usual mouse-and-keyboard interaction.
- Task View lets you switch between open games and applications.
- The Windows desktop remains available for tasks that need it.
Some desktop behavior changes intentionally. Multi-window apps may expose only their most recent window, unsupported full-screen applications may appear against a black background, and some familiar desktop shortcuts may be unavailable or behave differently.

Supported Windows versions and handhelds
Microsoft states that Xbox mode requires Windows 11 version 24H2 or later, a supported market, and a compatible gaming home app. Availability can also depend on the device maker’s configuration, the Microsoft Store Xbox app version, phased rollout status, and whether a device is using an Insider preview build.
To check your Windows version, open Settings → System → About and look under Windows specifications. Install available Windows and Microsoft Store updates before assuming the feature is unavailable.

Microsoft has also discussed expanding the experience to laptops, desktops, and tablets through Windows Insider preview builds. That does not necessarily mean every conventional PC has the same stable feature availability as a supported handheld.
Microsoft and Xbox market the experience across compatible devices including the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Ally family, Lenovo Legion Go S, and MSI Claw models. Individual models can differ in drivers, control software, power behavior, and rollout timing.
How to enable Xbox mode
Set it up on a supported handheld
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Go to Gaming → Xbox mode. Depending on the Windows build, the setting may be labeled Full screen experience.
- Under Choose home app, select the installed supported gaming home app.
- Enable Enter Xbox mode on startup if you want the handheld to boot into the controller-first interface after signing in.
- Restart, or sign out and sign back in, if the mode does not appear immediately.
Selecting None under the home-app setting disables Xbox mode.
Enter or exit it manually
Microsoft documents several ways to switch modes:
- Press Win + F11.
- Press Win + G, or the Xbox button, and use Game Bar settings.
- Press Win + Tab to open Task View and select the Xbox mode entry.
To return to the desktop, use Game Bar settings, Task View, Win + F11, or the Windows desktop option in the task switcher. On a touch-enabled device, swiping up from the bottom can open Task View.

On ROG Xbox Ally models, ASUS documents swiping up, selecting Windows Desktop, and returning to the Xbox interface by opening the Xbox app and choosing its Xbox Full Screen option. ASUS also notes that restoring the startup-style background-process optimization may require a restart.
Using a Windows handheld for TV gaming
Xbox mode does not provide HDMI output, a dock, power delivery, or a controller. A practical living-room setup usually includes:
- A Windows 11 gaming handheld with Xbox mode enabled.
- A USB-C dock or hub with HDMI output.
- A television or monitor.
- A sufficiently powerful USB-C power-delivery charger.
- A wireless Xbox controller or another compatible gamepad.
- Optional wired Ethernet for downloads, Remote Play, or cloud gaming.
Check the handheld’s specifications before buying a dock. Confirm USB-C power-delivery support, HDMI output, Ethernet, port count, and whether the charger can supply enough power for the desired performance mode.
Start at 1080p, not 4K
A handheld may output to a 4K television, but that does not mean its APU can render demanding games smoothly at native 4K. Begin with 1080p output, a sensible resolution scale, a capped frame rate, and a balanced or performance graphics preset. Adjust upward only when the particular game and hardware can sustain it.

TV output can increase GPU demand, heat, and fan noise. Docked play normally uses wall power, but higher-performance modes may require the manufacturer’s charger rather than a low-power USB-C adapter. Xbox mode should not be treated as a battery-life feature.
How games and apps fit into the experience
Xbox, PC Game Pass, and Play Anywhere
Xbox mode is most coherent for users who play Xbox PC games, PC Game Pass titles, or Xbox Play Anywhere games. Supported Play Anywhere titles can synchronize saves, add-ons, and achievements across Xbox consoles, Windows PCs, and supported handhelds.
Xbox mode can also provide entry points for Xbox Remote Play and Xbox Cloud Gaming. These are different from running a game locally:

- Multi-Platform PC Gaming Controller: Working with Switch, PC, Android, and iOS devices via Bluetooth, wired, and wireless dongle connections.
- Hall Effect Joysticks: Delivering enhanced recentering performance for smoother control and superior anti-drift capability. Plus, with anti-friction rings.
- 2-Way Trigger Lock: With trigger stops, gamers can toggle between short and long pull positions. Additionally, gamers can activate hair trigger mode by pressing M+LT/RT (triggers must be in the long pull position).
- 1000Hz Polling Rate: This ensures that your inputs are registered almost instantaneously, minimizing lag and maximizing your performance during competitive play.
- Mechanical Circular D-pad: Designed for quick reactions and accuracy in every direction, this D-pad elevates your gaming experience with superior responsiveness.
- Remote Play streams a game installed on your Xbox console.
- Cloud Gaming streams supported games from Microsoft’s service and requires an eligible subscription, compatible device and region, and a suitable internet connection.
- Local PC gaming runs the Windows version on the handheld and does not require Game Pass if you own the game through another supported storefront.
Cloud gaming is therefore not an offline extension of Xbox mode. Latency, bandwidth, image quality, regional availability, and subscription requirements still apply. Consult the official Xbox handheld page for current service qualifications.
Steam, Epic, GOG, and other PC stores
The underlying machine remains a Windows PC. ASUS says ROG Xbox Ally devices can access games from Xbox and other PC stores, and other Windows handhelds can likewise use their installed launchers where supported.
However, “access” does not mean every library is automatically merged into one perfect console interface. A game may need to be installed through Steam, Epic, GOG, or another launcher; added through the manufacturer’s launcher; launched from the original storefront; or configured separately for controller input. Some launchers still display authentication prompts, desktop dialogs, or keyboard-focused controls.
Mods, emulators, and unusual PC software
Windows is an advantage when you need mod managers, emulators, retro games, fan patches, independent executables, utilities, Discord, media apps, or manual graphics configuration. These tasks commonly require the desktop, file management, or a mouse and keyboard.
ASUS specifically recommends the desktop for advanced activities such as modding and playing retro or indie titles that are not available through traditional launchers.
Controller navigation and multitasking
Xbox mode is particularly useful when the handheld is connected to a television because it reduces the need to reach for a mouse. Microsoft documents these controller behaviors:
- Long-press the Xbox button to open Task View.
- Use the left stick, shoulder buttons, or arrow keys to move between open items.
- Press A to bring an app to the foreground.
- Press X to close an item.
This is a significant improvement over an ordinary Windows desktop, but it is not a universal console shell. Installers, anti-cheat dialogs, login screens, notifications, launcher windows, and some game settings may still require touch, a mouse, or a keyboard.

Performance: useful optimization, not a guaranteed FPS boost
When startup entry into Xbox mode is enabled, Microsoft says Windows limits background processes while gaming. That can reduce unnecessary resource use, especially on a handheld with limited memory. Microsoft’s developer documentation also warns that launchers running in the background consume limited memory and system resources.
There is no responsible universal claim that Xbox mode adds a fixed number of frames per second. Actual performance depends on:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- APU and GPU power limits.
- TDP or manufacturer performance mode.
- Game resolution and display refresh rate.
- RAM allocation and drivers.
- Background applications and overlays.
- Whether the game is local or streamed.
- TV output resolution and scaling.
Opening the Xbox app manually after booting to the desktop may not produce exactly the same system state as entering Xbox mode at startup, particularly after switching back and forth.
Common problems and first fixes
| Problem | Likely cause | First fix |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox mode is missing | Unsupported Windows build, app version, market, device, or rollout | Confirm Windows 11 24H2 or later, run Windows Update, update Xbox through Microsoft Store, and restart |
| The handheld boots to the desktop | Startup entry is disabled | Open Settings → Gaming → Xbox mode and enable Enter Xbox mode on startup |
| A game is not listed | It uses another launcher or is not indexed automatically | Open the original launcher or add the game through the handheld manufacturer’s software |
| Controller navigation fails | Competing control software, incorrect profile, launcher focus, or keyboard-only input | Update Windows, Xbox, and control software; test in Game Bar; then try the original launcher |
| TV performance is poor | High output resolution, power limit, heat, or unsuitable charger | Use 1080p, lower in-game settings, cap the frame rate, and connect the correct charger |
| Cloud gaming stutters | Wi-Fi congestion, latency, bandwidth, or regional service conditions | Try wired Ethernet or stronger Wi-Fi and verify the service and subscription requirements |
| Returning to the desktop changes performance | Startup-mode background-process optimization is no longer active | Restart into Xbox mode if you need the optimized startup state |
There is no single universal controller fix because Windows handhelds combine Microsoft software with manufacturer control utilities, overlays, remapping profiles, and launchers.

Xbox mode is a strong fit if you already own a Windows handheld, prefer PC Game Pass or Xbox Play Anywhere, want one portable device that can also connect to a TV, use multiple storefronts, or value access to mods and desktop applications.
It is a weaker fit if you expect every PC game to appear in one perfectly integrated library, dislike Windows troubleshooting, depend on mouse-and-keyboard games, expect smooth native 4K from a handheld APU, or want a maintenance-free living-room appliance.

For a fixed-location television, a traditional Xbox console remains simpler: it generally offers more predictable plug-and-play behavior, consistent controller navigation, and performance designed around TV gaming. A Windows handheld wins on portability, PC storefronts, mods, and flexibility.
Accessories that complete the setup
- USB-C dock: Look for HDMI, adequate power delivery, Ethernet, and the ports you need.
- Xbox Wireless Controller: More comfortable than holding the docked handheld for long sessions. See the official controller page.
- Headset: Xbox’s Wireless Headset is one option, but confirm compatibility with your dock and existing audio setup.
- Game Pass: Worth considering only if its PC catalog or cloud features match how you play. Check the official service page for current plans and pricing.
A dock, charger, controller, headset, and Game Pass are separate purchases. Xbox mode itself does not include any of them.
