If windows.devices.background.dll is missing, cannot be loaded, or was not found, repair Windows first rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
The file belongs to the Windows.Devices.Background WinRT namespace, which supports background operations used by Windows and UWP applications for device synchronization, servicing, settings, and firmware-related tasks. Microsoft services this component as part of Windows, so there is no separate official DLL download.

Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
Time needed: 10–30 minutes, depending on pending updates.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA failed or incomplete update is a common reason for a Windows component to disappear or become incompatible.

- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install every available update.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Try the affected application again.
On Windows 10, open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update, then select Check for updates.
If the error began immediately after an interrupted restart or update, do not copy a DLL from another computer. Continue with DISM and SFC below after Windows Update finishes.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15–45 minutes.
Microsoft recommends running Deployment Image Servicing and Management before System File Checker. DISM repairs the Windows component source, while SFC checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies when a usable repair source is available. Follow the official System File Checker procedure.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait until it completes. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Open the application that reported the DLL error.
A successful result may say that SFC found corrupt files and repaired them, or that it did not find any integrity violations. If the error remains, the result matters:
- If DISM cannot find source files, use the Microsoft DISM repair-source procedure.
- If SFC reports that it could not repair some files, run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC once.
- If corruption returns repeatedly, investigate storage problems, malware, or a failed Windows servicing operation instead of repeatedly copying the DLL.
You can also specify a matching Windows repair source:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with a source matching the installed Windows edition, language, architecture, and build.
If repeatedly hunting through repair logs and rerunning SFC/DISM leaves you unsure what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what it identifies; repair is performed by the full version. It is optional, and Windows repair remains the correct path for this Microsoft component.

Fix 3: Check whether the file exists and is genuine
Time needed: 5–10 minutes.
The normal locations are:
C:WindowsSystem32Windows.Devices.Background.dll
C:WindowsSysWOW64Windows.Devices.Background.dll
On 64-bit Windows, the naming is counterintuitive:
System32contains native 64-bit system files.SysWOW64contains 32-bit system files.
Do not copy the file from SysWOW64 into System32, or the other way around.
To search both locations and any other Windows directory:
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Run:
where /r "%windir%" Windows.Devices.Background.dll
- Right-click any located file and select Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab.
- Inspect the signer. A genuine Windows copy should carry a Microsoft signature.
The exact version varies by Windows build and architecture. Historical inventories list several different Windows versions, so there is no universal version number that every Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation should have.
The companion file Windows.Devices.Background.ps.dll is separate. It is an interface-proxy file and is not a replacement for Windows.Devices.Background.dll.
Fix 4: Repair only the affected application
Time needed: 5–30 minutes.
If Windows works normally and only one Microsoft Store app, UWP app, game, or desktop application reports the error, its deployment may be damaged even when the Windows copy is intact.
Windows 11 apps
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Test the application.
- If Repair does not help, use Reset where appropriate, then test again.
Not every application offers both options. Microsoft documents these steps in its guide to repairing apps and programs.
For traditional desktop software:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs > Programs and Features.
- Right-click the affected program.
- Choose Repair or Change, if available.
- Restart and test it.
For a game, use the launcher’s official Verify files, Repair, or equivalent command. If no repair command exists, uninstall and reinstall it using the publisher’s official installer or the Microsoft Store. Do not place a downloaded DLL beside the game executable.
Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine
Time needed: 5–15 minutes.
Security software may quarantine a Windows file after a false positive, or the file may have been altered by malware.
In Windows Security:
- Open Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
Windows.Devices.Background.dll. - Note the original path, detection name, and action taken.
Do not automatically restore the file. First confirm that:
- it came from
C:WindowsSystem32orC:WindowsSysWOW64; - its Properties dialog shows a Microsoft digital signature;
- the detection is a false positive;
- the computer does not show other signs of infection.
Microsoft explains the behavior of quarantined files in its Protection History guidance. If the file was replaced or modified by malware, repair Windows with DISM and SFC rather than trusting the quarantined copy. Run a full Windows Security scan as well.

Fix 6: Check drivers only when the evidence points there
Time needed: 10–30 minutes.
Windows.Devices.Background.dll is a Windows Runtime component, not the device driver itself. Reinstalling a driver is not a primary fix for this error unless Device Manager or the affected application separately identifies a driver problem.
To check:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Look for a yellow warning icon.
- Expand the relevant device category.
- Right-click the affected device and select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
For a known device, use the hardware manufacturer’s official support channel. Windows Features are also not a normal source for this DLL, so enabling random optional features is unlikely to repair it.

Time needed: 30–90 minutes.
On supported Windows 11 installations, Microsoft provides a repair reinstall that keeps apps, files, and settings.
- Open Start > Settings > System > Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the on-screen instructions.
- Let the computer restart as required.
This is useful when DISM and SFC cannot repair the component or when an update damaged several Windows files. See Microsoft’s instructions for reinstalling the current version of Windows.
Fix 8: Use System Restore or Windows recovery
Time needed: 20 minutes to several hours.
Use System Restore when the problem started after a recent update, driver, application, or system change and a restore point predates the failure.
System Restore rolls back system files and settings, but it does not normally remove personal documents. Open Start, search for Create a restore point, select System Restore, and choose an appropriate restore point.
If that does not work, use the recovery options described by Microsoft, including Reset this PC or installation media, in its Windows recovery guide.
Why downloading the DLL is the wrong fix
Do not download Windows.Devices.Background.dll from a random DLL repository. A loose file may be:
- modified or bundled with unwanted software;
- unsigned;
- the wrong architecture;
- from a different Windows build;
- incompatible with the rest of the component store.
Do not register it with regsvr32. This Windows Runtime component exposes activation-related exports rather than the usual DllRegisterServer interface. Microsoft documents regsvr32 for DLLs that support self-registration, not as a general repair command. See the regsvr32 documentation and DLL self-registration guidance.
The safe sources are Windows Update, Windows recovery, DISM, SFC, the Microsoft Store, and the affected application’s official installer.
Likely causes and the correct response
| What you observe | More likely cause | Correct response |
|---|---|---|
| Several Windows components fail | Corrupted Windows files or component store | Run DISM, then SFC |
| The issue began after an update | Incomplete or damaged update | Finish updates, restart, then repair Windows |
| Only one app fails | Broken application deployment | Repair, verify, or reinstall that application |
| The file is in quarantine | Security software action or malware | Verify signature and path before restoring |
| Entry-point error | Version or architecture mismatch | Remove manual copies and repair the app or Windows |
| Corruption keeps returning | Disk, malware, or servicing damage | Scan the system and investigate storage health |
FAQ
Is this file a driver?
No. It is a Windows Runtime component associated with the Windows.Devices.Background namespace. A related device driver may have a separate problem, but reinstalling drivers alone does not normally restore this DLL.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
No verified evidence indicates that those redistributables provide this Windows component. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, or application repair instead.
Can I copy the file from another computer?
That is not generally safe. Windows files vary by build, edition, language, architecture, and update level. Manual copying can create a second mismatch and bypass the component store.

What does “procedure entry point could not be located” mean?
It usually indicates an incompatible or mismatched binary rather than a simply absent file. Remove manually copied DLLs and repair the affected application or Windows.
Why does the error mention a DLL that exists?
The named file may be present while a dependency, component-store file, signature, or architecture is damaged. That is why DISM and SFC are safer than replacing the named file alone.
