If Windows Photo Viewer has disappeared from Open with, the problem usually has one of two causes: the old viewer is no longer registered as a selectable application, or your image files are simply associated with a different program. Windows has not made the legacy viewer its supported default; Microsoft’s supported photo application is Microsoft Photos. You can restore reliable JPG, PNG, GIF and other image opening without touching the registry by assigning each extension in Windows settings.
What “Windows Photo Viewer missing” actually means
Windows users often use “missing” to describe different symptoms. Identifying which one you have prevents unnecessary system changes.

The old viewer is absent from Open with
When you right-click a picture and choose Open with, Windows may show Microsoft Photos, Paint or another installed application but not the familiar Windows Photo Viewer entry. This generally means the legacy program is not registered in the list of applications Windows can launch for that file type. It does not by itself prove that every related file has been deleted.

You may still have a viewer installed while .jpg, .jpeg, .png or .gif files open in another program. In that case the application is available, but its file-type association is not selected. “Missing” in the right-click menu can therefore be an association problem rather than a missing executable.

Microsoft Photos is the supported replacement
Microsoft describes Photos as an app to “view, import, organize, edit, and share” photos and videos. On current Windows 10 and Windows 11 installations, Microsoft Photos is the supported first choice for opening pictures. The classic Photo Viewer has not been the normal supported default workflow on those releases.
Set Microsoft Photos as the default viewer
The safest fix is to choose a default app by file type. Windows stores the choice separately for each extension, so setting .jpg does not automatically change .png or .gif.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Default apps.
- Use the search box to find an extension such as
.jpg, or scroll through the file-type list. - Select the application currently shown for that extension.
- Choose Microsoft Photos, or select another viewer that is already installed.
- Confirm the change when Windows asks which app should open the file type.
- Repeat the process for every extension you use, including
.jpeg,.pngand.gif.
The labels and layout can vary slightly between Windows releases, but the path remains Settings > Apps > Default apps. If you want a different viewer for PNG files than for JPEG files, make those choices independently.

For a one-time choice, right-click an image, select Open with, and choose an installed application. If Windows offers a checkbox or prompt to make that app the default, use it only when you want the choice applied to that extension. A one-time launch does not necessarily change the default for future files.

Check the common image extensions
A clean setup should be tested against the formats you actually receive. Use a small image of each type, right-click it and confirm the selected app, or review each extension under Default apps.

If an extension is not listed in the app’s supported file types, do not assume the program is damaged. Choose an application that explicitly appears when you select that extension, or install a viewer that supports the format.
Repair or reinstall Microsoft Photos when it is missing
Sometimes the problem is not the file association: Microsoft Photos itself may be missing, fail to launch or close immediately. Windows provides app-management and Microsoft Store options, although the exact labels depend on the installed release.
Look for repair and reset controls
- Open Settings and go to Apps.
- Open Installed apps or Apps & features, depending on your Windows version.
- Find Microsoft Photos, open its menu, and select Advanced options when available.
- Try Repair first. This attempts to correct the app without removing its stored data.
- If Photos still fails, use Reset if it is offered. Resetting can remove the app’s local settings, so you may need to choose defaults again afterward.
Do not interrupt an update or reset while it is running. Afterward, return to Settings > Apps > Default apps and assign the extensions again if Windows cleared them.

Reinstall from Microsoft Store
If Photos is not present in the installed-app list, open the Microsoft Store and search for the official Microsoft Photos app. Install it, launch it once, and then repeat the default-app procedure. Store availability and the wording of the install controls can differ by Windows edition, region and release; use the Microsoft-published Photos listing rather than an unofficial package.
Test whether the problem is limited to Photos
Before changing system settings, right-click a picture and try another already-installed viewer. If another app opens the file, the image itself is probably readable and the fault is limited to Photos or its registration. If no viewer can open the file, test a different image; a damaged or incomplete download can mimic an application problem.
Can the classic Windows Photo Viewer be brought back?
Unofficial Windows guides report that PhotoViewer.dll can remain on some installations even when the application-registration entries that make “Windows Photo Viewer” selectable are absent. Those guides restore registry entries and then assign image extensions in Default apps. This is an advanced configuration change, not Microsoft’s normal supported workflow.

- The presence, location or behavior of the DLL and registry entries can differ by Windows edition and release.
- An imported registry file changes system configuration for every account or for a broad part of the system, depending on the keys it contains.
- A malformed or untrusted registry file can create new problems, and a registry change will not repair a damaged image file.
- Even after registration, you still have to assign .jpg, .jpeg, .png, .gif and any other desired extensions individually.
Prepare before attempting an unofficial import
- Create a Windows restore point and confirm that System Protection is enabled for the system drive.
- Open Registry Editor and export the relevant key before changing it, saving the backup somewhere you can access offline.
- Use only instructions that clearly match your Windows edition and architecture. Stop if a downloaded file has no trustworthy origin, asks you to disable security controls, or does not explain which keys it changes.
- After the import, restart if the instructions require it, open Settings > Apps > Default apps, and assign each image extension.
- If anything behaves unexpectedly, undo the change with the exported key or restore point rather than importing additional files at random.
For most people, this effort is unnecessary. If the goal is simply to open pictures, Microsoft Photos or another viewer already installed on the computer avoids an unsupported registry modification.

Choose between Photos, the legacy viewer and another app
There is no single best viewer for every Windows installation. Evaluate the option against the way you handle images rather than choosing solely because its name is familiar.

If you need albums, imports or basic edits, Photos is the practical supported choice. If you prefer a minimal viewer, use an installed application that supports your formats and assign it by extension. Treat the classic viewer as an optional legacy configuration, not a required component of Windows.

Photos opens, but files still launch elsewhere
Revisit Default apps and check the exact extension of the file that is misbehaving. A file named with an uncommon suffix may not be covered by the four common extensions. Assign that suffix separately, then close and reopen File Explorer before testing again.

The default keeps reverting
Check whether you are selecting an installed desktop application or a program that has been removed. Reinstall the chosen app if it no longer appears, then set the association again. Windows updates or application updates can also present a new app-registration choice, so verify the extension after a major update.

Open with shows duplicate or obsolete entries
Duplicate entries usually indicate old registrations rather than a failure to read the image. Select the working installed application from Default apps instead of repeatedly choosing stale entries. Avoid deleting registry values unless you have a specific, backed-up procedure for your Windows release.
Only one account has the problem
Default-app choices can be user-specific. Sign in to the affected Windows account and set the associations there. If every account shows the same behavior, investigate the app installation or system registration rather than changing one user’s preferences repeatedly.
The image itself will not open
Copy the file to another folder and try a different image from the same source. If only one file fails, download or copy it again. If many files fail in several viewers, check that their extensions match their actual formats and that the files were not truncated during transfer.

- Open one
.jpg,.jpeg,.pngand.giffile. - Confirm that each opens in the intended application and that animated files behave as expected.
- Right-click each test file and review Open with to ensure the selected program is the one you want.
- Restart Windows once if you repaired or reinstalled Photos, then repeat the tests.
- Keep a note of any extension you intentionally assigned to a different viewer; future troubleshooting is easier when the choices are deliberate.

Start with Settings > Apps > Default apps and assign every image extension you use to Microsoft Photos or another installed viewer. Repair or reinstall Photos if the app itself is broken. Only consider registry restoration when you specifically need the legacy Windows Photo Viewer, have created a restore point and registry backup, and have verified that the instructions match your Windows release. For ordinary photo opening, the supported Photos app is the safer, simpler solution.
