Netflix also documents a second possibility: data stored by the app or device needs to be refreshed. Test another internet app first, then reload or sign out of Netflix, restart the streaming device, and power-cycle the modem and router in that order.
This guide covers the exact paths for smart TVs and streaming players, how to tell a Netflix-only problem from a wider network failure, when to involve your internet provider or device manufacturer, and how to use an optional Ethernet test.

What “Unable to Connect to Netflix” means
Netflix describes the message as a network-connectivity error: the device is not successfully reaching the Netflix service. Its official guidance says, “It typically points to a network connectivity issue that is preventing your device from reaching the Netflix service.” See the Netflix error guidance for the original wording and device recommendations.

A connection can fail at several points. The television or player may have lost its Wi-Fi association, the modem or router may be offline, or a local network setting may be wrong. If every other internet app works, the network path is probably available and Netflix may instead need to be reloaded, signed out, or refreshed. Netflix also notes that data stored on the device can require a refresh; its related instructions are in the Netflix sign-out and restart guidance.

The message does not by itself prove that your subscription, television, or internet service is permanently broken. Work through the checks below from least disruptive to most disruptive, stopping when Netflix reconnects.
Why does Netflix say unable to connect while other apps work?
When YouTube, a web browser, or another streaming service works on the same device, the television is probably connected to the internet. That narrows the immediate troubleshooting to Netflix’s app session, locally stored data, an app update, or device firmware. It does not prove that Netflix’s service is available at every moment, so note the exact message and time if the problem persists.
Do not start by changing DNS, opening router ports, or factory-resetting the TV. Those advanced changes can create new problems and are not part of Netflix’s first-line sequence. Reload Netflix, sign out and sign back in, and restart the device before making any network configuration change.
Start with a two-minute connection test
Open another internet app
On the same TV, player, or set-top box, open an app that also uses the internet. Netflix specifically recommends this comparison. You can also run the device’s built-in network test if one is available.
- Another app also fails: treat this as a device or home-network connection problem. Continue with the device restart and network restart.
- Other apps work normally: the device is online, so concentrate on reloading Netflix, signing out and back in, and checking for a Netflix app or firmware update.
- The network test reports an error: record the wording and any Wi-Fi or cable status shown. That information helps the internet provider or device manufacturer identify the failing part.
Netflix says device-specific connection instructions belong in the device manual or with the manufacturer. Do not change advanced router settings yet; first complete the simple restart sequence.
Check what is connected before restarting
Confirm that the TV or player is using your intended home Wi-Fi network rather than a guest network, phone hotspot, or an old saved network. If you use Ethernet, check that the cable is plugged into the device and router and that the device reports a wired connection. A loose cable or an incorrect Wi-Fi password can make Netflix appear to be the problem when the device is actually offline.
Core fixes, in the recommended order
1. Reload, exit, or sign out of Netflix
Use the option your device displays. On supported televisions and players, open More Details and choose Reload Netflix, or choose Exit Netflix and launch the app again. Some interfaces show Reload Netflix directly. These commands close the current app session and refresh its connection without changing your account.
If reloading does not help, sign out completely. In Netflix, open Get Help, select Sign out, confirm, and then sign in again. A sign-out removes the current session from that device; it does not cancel the account. If you cannot find the menu, use the device-specific instructions in Netflix’s error article or related troubleshooting article.
Have your Netflix sign-in method available before signing out. Depending on the device, you may need to enter an email address and password, scan a code, or approve the device from another screen. Signing out is useful for a stale session, but it cannot repair an internet connection that also prevents other apps from loading.

2. Restart the streaming device
Turn off the TV, streaming stick, player, or set-top box. If it has a physical power button, press that button once, wait one minute, and turn it back on. Netflix also gives a deeper option: unplug the device from power, leave it unplugged for three minutes, reconnect it, and retry Netflix.
Do not skip the wait by immediately reconnecting the plug. The pause allows the device’s temporary state and network session to clear. After the home screen returns, wait for the device to show that it is connected before opening Netflix.

Removing only the HDMI connection may leave the stick powered, so it may not actually restart.
3. Restart the modem and separate router
If Netflix still cannot connect, restart the home network. First turn off or unplug the TV or player. Unplug the modem and, if you have one, the separate router. Leave both disconnected for 30 seconds. Reconnect the modem first, then reconnect the router, and wait until their indicator lights stabilize. Turn the streaming device back on and test Netflix.
If your internet gateway combines modem and router functions in one box, unplug that single unit for the same 30-second interval and wait for its lights to settle before retrying. Avoid pressing a small reset button marked Reset; that can erase network configuration, whereas unplugging is the restart Netflix is describing.
Allow extra time for the network to return after power is restored. The device may show Wi-Fi before the internet connection is fully usable, so test another app if Netflix opens too quickly and displays the same message.

4. Check for a local outage or network fault
When the restart sequence changes nothing, contact your internet service provider (ISP). Ask whether there is a local outage and whether the modem, router, or network settings need repair. Netflix says the ISP can check those conditions and reset the network connection.
Tell the ISP exactly how the device is connected: Wi-Fi or a direct Ethernet cable. Mention whether other apps on the same device work and whether phones or computers can reach the internet on the same home network. Before ending the support call, Netflix recommends running a speed test at fast.com and reporting the result to the ISP. A test result is evidence about the connection at that moment, not a guarantee that Netflix will work at every later time.
If several household devices fail at once, lead with that fact. If only the TV fails while phones and computers remain online, explain that distinction so the ISP does not treat a device-specific fault as a whole-house outage.

5. Update the device or Netflix app
If the error remains after the network has been checked, look for pending updates in the TV or player’s settings and in its app store. Netflix says an outdated device may produce a “Not connected to the Internet” message even when the household network is available. Ask the manufacturer for the latest firmware instructions for your exact model.

Follow the manufacturer’s documented procedure rather than downloading firmware from an unverified site. A reset can remove apps, accounts, and personal settings, so record your Wi-Fi password and sign-in details before using it.
Keep the device connected to reliable power during an update. Do not interrupt a firmware installation because Netflix still shows an error; wait for the manufacturer’s process to finish, then restart the device and test again.
6. Try another compatible device
If the ISP confirms that the network is working and the manufacturer cannot restore the original device, test Netflix on another supported TV, computer, phone, or streaming player. This separates a device-specific compatibility or firmware problem from an account-wide concern. Netflix’s guidance for persistent “Not connected to the Internet” errors includes using another device when update and reset steps fail; see Netflix’s device-connection instructions.
If Netflix works on the comparison device, keep using it temporarily while the original device is repaired or replaced. If Netflix fails on multiple devices using the same network, return to the ISP checks rather than buying new hardware immediately.

Smart TV
- Open Netflix and choose More Details if that control appears.
- Select Reload Netflix. If it is unavailable, choose Exit Netflix, reopen the app, and use Get Help › Sign out if necessary.
- Restart the television using the one-minute power-button method or the three-minute unplug method.
- Restart the modem and router, wait for stable lights, and reconnect the TV.
- Check the TV manufacturer’s firmware menu if the message continues.
Menu names vary by television brand and software version. If a menu is missing, do not assume the feature was removed; consult the model’s manual or manufacturer support.
If the TV reports that Wi-Fi is connected but no app can reach the internet, the Wi-Fi association alone is not proof of internet access. Run the built-in network test or open another internet app before repeating Netflix sign-ins.
Streaming stick, player, or set-top box
- Open another streaming app or the player’s network test.
- In Netflix, open Get Help and choose Sign out, then sign in again.
- Power-cycle the player, including its external power adapter if it has one.
- Power-cycle the modem and separate router, then retry Netflix.
- Install any player or app update offered by the manufacturer.
Some sticks draw power from a TV USB port. For a proper restart, use the player’s documented power method; unplugging only the HDMI cable may leave the device powered and running.
“Netflix is Currently Unavailable” or an update prompt
Netflix says this message generally indicates either that the app needs an update or that the network connection is failing. Apply the same connection test, sign-out, restart, and network-restart sequence above, then check the device’s app store and firmware controls. The official explanation is available at Netflix’s “Netflix is Currently Unavailable” page.

An update prompt does not mean you should install software from a third-party download site. Use the TV or player’s official app store and the manufacturer’s documented firmware channel.
Wi-Fi troubleshooting versus a direct Ethernet test
If the device has an Ethernet port, a cable connection is a useful diagnostic experiment. It will not repair every Netflix error, but it can show whether the wireless link is the part failing. Connect the TV or player directly to the router, select the wired connection in the device’s network settings, and test another app before opening Netflix.
| Test | What it changes | How to interpret the result |
|---|---|---|
| Wi-Fi | Uses the device’s wireless radio and the router’s wireless network. | If Wi-Fi fails while a wired test works, investigate wireless range, interference, or router Wi-Fi settings with the ISP or manufacturer. |
| Direct Ethernet | Uses a cable from the device to the router and bypasses the wireless link. | If wired and Wi-Fi both fail, focus on the modem, router, ISP, device software, or Netflix app session rather than Wi-Fi alone. |
| Neither connection available | The device may lack an Ethernet port or require a supported adapter. | Use the device manual; do not assume any USB-to-Ethernet adapter is compatible. |
When contacting the ISP, state whether your successful or failed test used Wi-Fi or a direct cable. That distinction is one of Netflix’s recommended details for support calls.
An Ethernet cable is an optional diagnostic accessory, not a guaranteed cure. Check that the TV or player actually has an Ethernet port or supports the specific adapter before purchasing anything. A wired test also requires the router to be close enough for the cable, and it does not resolve an ISP outage or an outdated app.

Why is Netflix not connected to the internet?
The phrase can describe either a general internet failure or a Netflix-specific session problem. Compare the same device with another internet app, then compare the device with another device on the same network. These two comparisons show whether the fault follows the app, the device, or the home connection.
- One app fails on one device: reload, sign out, restart, and update that app and device.
- All apps fail on one device: check its network selection, restart it, and ask the manufacturer about firmware or compatible adapters.
- Several devices fail: restart the modem/router and contact the ISP about an outage or network settings.
- Netflix fails everywhere but other apps work: document the message and contact Netflix support after completing the local restart and sign-in steps.
When Netflix fails but every other app works
A Netflix-only failure narrows the likely causes but does not identify one automatically. First reload the app, then sign out through Get Help and sign in again. Restart the device even if other apps are responsive; the Netflix app can retain a stale local session while the rest of the device remains online.
Next check for a Netflix app update and a device firmware update. If the app store offers no update, the manufacturer may still have firmware that affects network compatibility. Record the exact message, your device model, and whether the same Netflix account works on another device before contacting support.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When the whole device is offline
If another internet app and the built-in network test both fail, do not repeatedly reinstall Netflix. Confirm that the TV or player is connected to the intended Wi-Fi network or to the Ethernet cable, then perform the device and modem/router restarts in the order above. If the device still cannot reach the internet, the ISP should check the line, outage status, modem, router, and network settings.
If other household devices work but this one does not, the problem may be limited to the TV or player. The manufacturer can explain model-specific network menus, firmware updates, compatible adapters, and any reset procedure. Keep the device’s model number and software version available.

Choosing between continued troubleshooting, support, and replacement
| Situation | Best next contact or action | Information to provide |
|---|---|---|
| Several devices cannot reach the internet | Contact the ISP for outage, modem, router, and network-setting checks. | Which devices fail, whether they use Wi-Fi or Ethernet, and the fast.com result. |
| Only one TV or player fails while other devices work | Contact the device manufacturer. | Model, firmware version, connection type, exact message, and steps already completed. |
| Netflix works on another device but not the original | Continue with manufacturer firmware or reset support; use the other device temporarily. | Comparison device, app behavior, and whether the original device has an Ethernet port. |
| Device is no longer receiving updates | Consider replacing it with a model that has current Netflix support, documented updates, and the connection type you need. | Confirm compatibility, update support, Ethernet availability, and the manufacturer’s support quality before buying. |
Replacement is a last resort, not the first response to this message. Confirm the ISP and firmware possibilities first, because a new player connected to the same faulty network can show the same error.
If you do replace a device, verify Netflix compatibility and update support for the exact model, not just the product family. Decide whether you need built-in Wi-Fi, an Ethernet port, or a supported Ethernet adapter, and review the manufacturer’s support options before purchase.
Before you contact support: a concise record
- Write down the exact Netflix message and any error code.
- Note the device make, model, operating-system or firmware version, and whether it uses Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
- Record whether another internet app works on that device.
- List whether you reloaded or exited Netflix, signed out and back in, restarted the device, and restarted the modem/router.
- Keep the fast.com result and the time it was measured.
This record prevents support from making you repeat the same checks and clarifies whether the problem follows the network or stays with one device.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does Netflix say “unable to connect to Netflix”?
Netflix says the message typically means the device cannot reach the Netflix service over its network. It can also appear when local app or device data needs to be refreshed. Test another internet app, then reload or sign out of Netflix and restart the device.
How do I fix a Netflix network error on my TV?
Open another internet app, choose More Details > Reload Netflix when available, or exit and sign back in through Get Help. Restart the TV, then unplug the modem and router for 30 seconds, reconnect them, wait for stable lights, and retry.
Why does Netflix not connect when other apps work?
The TV is likely online, so reload Netflix, sign out and back in, restart the TV or player, and check for Netflix and firmware updates. If Netflix works on another device, the original device may have a compatibility or firmware issue.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Restart the streaming device first. If that does not help, unplug the device, modem, and separate router; leave the network equipment disconnected for 30 seconds, reconnect the modem first, then the router, and wait for the lights to stabilize.
Will an Ethernet cable fix the error?
It may diagnose a failed Wi-Fi link, but it is not a guaranteed fix. If wired Netflix works while Wi-Fi fails, investigate wireless range or router settings. If both fail, focus on the ISP, router, device software, or app session.
When should I contact my internet provider?
Contact the ISP when several devices cannot reach the internet or the restart sequence does not restore service. Ask about outages, modem or router faults, and network settings. Tell the ISP whether the player uses Wi-Fi or direct Ethernet and provide a fast.com result.
When should I contact the TV or streaming-device manufacturer?
Contact the manufacturer when only one device fails, when its built-in network test fails while other household devices work, or when the device needs firmware, reset, or adapter guidance. Have the model and software version ready.
Could the device be too old for Netflix?
An outdated device may show a “Not connected to the Internet” message even when the network works. Ask the manufacturer for current firmware and reset instructions. If updates and reset support fail, use or replace the device with one that has current Netflix support.
The Bottom Line
“Unable to connect to Netflix” usually points to a network path or stale device data. Test another app, reload or sign out of Netflix, restart the device, and power-cycle the modem and router. Then update firmware, run a wired Ethernet comparison if available, and contact the ISP or device manufacturer based on which devices fail.
