The errors you may see
Windows may display one of these messages:
- “The program can’t start because windows.system.profile.hardwareid.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because windows.system.profile.hardwareid.dll was not found.”
- “There was a problem starting windows.system.profile.hardwareid.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “windows.system.profile.hardwareid.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- “Error loading windows.system.profile.hardwareid.dll.”

The windows.system.profile.hardwareid.dll error usually means that a Windows component is missing, damaged, blocked, or incompatible with the application requesting it. It is not a Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, .NET, or device-driver file.
The 60-second answer
windows.system.profile.hardwareid.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows Runtime component associated with the Windows.System.Profile.HardwareIdentification API. The API provides an app-specific hardware identifier through GetPackageSpecificToken; it is not a general-purpose hardware-detection library.

On 64-bit Windows, the native copy belongs in:
C:WindowsSystem32
A 32-bit copy used by a 32-bit process belongs in:
C:WindowsSysWOW64
The names are confusing: on 64-bit Windows, System32 contains 64-bit system files, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files. Windows manages this redirection automatically. See Microsoft’s file system redirector documentation.
What causes this DLL error
The message does not always mean that the named file itself is absent. Common causes include:
| Cause | What it means | Best response |
|---|---|---|
| Damaged Windows component | The protected file or its component-store source is corrupted | Run DISM, then SFC |
| Antivirus quarantine | Security software removed or blocked a system file | Check Protection History |
| Damaged application | One program has incomplete or corrupted files | Repair or reinstall that program |
| Architecture mismatch | A 32-bit application cannot use the wrong system copy | Restore the file through Windows servicing |
| Missing dependency | The loader could not find another DLL required by this component | Repair Windows and investigate the requesting application |
| Recent system change | An update, driver, or installer caused the failure | Use System Restore or repair Windows |
“The specified module could not be found” can refer to a dependency rather than the DLL named in the error. Windows loads dependent DLLs separately, as Microsoft explains in its DLL search order documentation.
Fix 1: Install pending Windows updates
Windows Update can replace damaged system components and install servicing fixes.
Windows 11
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install everything offered.
- Restart when prompted.
- Check for updates again after restarting.
Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Update & Security.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install the available updates and restart.
Test the affected application after the restart. Use Microsoft’s Windows Update instructions if the update page reports an error.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the primary repair for a missing or corrupted Windows copy of windows.system.profile.hardwareid.dll.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to reach 100 percent.
- Leave the window open, even if progress appears to pause.
DISM repairs the Windows component store, which SFC uses as a source for protected system files.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsRun System File Checker
After DISM completes, enter:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent, then read the final message.

- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them means the repair succeeded.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them means further repair is needed.
Restart Windows and test the program again. Microsoft documents this DISM-then-SFC sequence in its System File Checker guidance.
Repeatedly running SFC without knowing whether the component store is healthy can leave you guessing about what changed. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the underlying Windows issues and show what needs attention; the repair is performed by the full version. It is optional, and Windows DISM/SFC remains the built-in repair path.
Fix 3: Repair or reinstall the affected application
If the error appears only when starting one game or application, the program may have damaged package files or may be incompatible with the current Windows installation.

- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Select Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
If Repair does not help, return to the same page and select Reset if available. Reset may remove the application’s local settings or data.
For a desktop application or game without a Windows repair option:
- Open the program’s own launcher.
- Look for Verify files, Repair, or a similar option.
- Run that operation.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the application again.
If the error remains, uninstall the program from Settings > Apps, restart, and install it again using the developer’s official installer or launcher. Do not copy a DLL from another computer into the application’s folder. Reinstalling the application is the definitive fix when its own installation is damaged.
Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine
Microsoft Defender or another security product may have quarantined a legitimate system file.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Expand an item that refers to the DLL or its Windows location.
Only restore a file when its path and Microsoft signature identify it as a genuine Windows component. Do not disable protection to force an unknown DLL into a system folder. After restoring a demonstrably legitimate file, run DISM and SFC again.
If the file was detected outside the normal Windows directories, treat that copy cautiously. A file with this name in a program folder, temporary directory, or download directory is not automatically genuine.

Fix 5: Check the file location, architecture, and signature
The expected locations on a 64-bit Windows installation are:
%windir%System32Windows.System.Profile.HardwareId.dll
%windir%SysWOW64Windows.System.Profile.HardwareId.dll
You can inspect both locations with PowerShell.
- Open Start.
- Type PowerShell.
- Right-click Windows PowerShell.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
$paths = @(
"$env:windirSystem32Windows.System.Profile.HardwareId.dll",
"$env:windirSysWOW64Windows.System.Profile.HardwareId.dll"
)

@{Name='Version';Expression={$_.VersionInfo.FileVersion}}

A legitimate system copy should be in a Windows system directory and have a valid Microsoft signature. The file version varies by Windows build, so do not treat an older inventory version as a universal download target.
If the file exists and is signed but the error continues, the problem may be a missing dependency or an application that cannot work with the installed Windows build. The presence of one valid DLL does not prove that every related component is healthy.
Fix 6: Do not use regsvr32 for this file
regsvr32 is not a general DLL repair command. It calls registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, but the recorded exports for this Windows Runtime component include DllGetClassObject, DllGetActivationFactory, and DllCanUnloadNow, not DllRegisterServer.
Running commands such as these is therefore not an appropriate repair:
regsvr32 Windows.System.Profile.HardwareId.dll
regsvr32 /u Windows.System.Profile.HardwareId.dll
They may produce an entry-point error and do not restore a damaged Windows component. Use DISM and SFC instead.

Fix 7: Investigate a recent driver or system change
A driver is not the normal source of this DLL, but a recent driver, update, or system utility can expose an existing Windows problem.
Check Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand categories containing recently changed hardware.
- Right-click a device with a warning icon.
- Select Properties and read the Device status message.
- On the Driver tab, select Roll Back Driver if the option is available and the failure began after an update.
- Otherwise select Update Driver and choose Search automatically for drivers.
Use the hardware manufacturer’s official support page when Windows cannot find a suitable driver. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify which versions need attention; the driver installation is performed by the full version. It is optional, and changing drivers will not replace the need to repair or reinstall the application that triggers this DLL error.
If the problem began immediately after software or driver installation, press Win+R, enter:

Fix 8: Repair Windows when DISM reports missing source files
If DISM returns 0x800f081f, Windows could not find the files needed for repair.
Use matching official Windows installation media as a repair source. The media should match the installed Windows edition and build as closely as possible. Do not use an older or different-edition image merely because it is available.
If normal repair still fails:
- On Windows 11, check Settings > System > Recovery > Fix problems using Windows Update > Reinstall now, if the option is present.
- As a final non-destructive escalation, start Windows Setup from official installation media and select Keep personal files and apps.
Back up important files before either recovery operation. Microsoft provides instructions for repairing Windows with installation media.
Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
A DLL download sites website may provide:
- The wrong Windows build
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- An unsigned or modified file
- A file containing malware
- A copy that still lacks its dependencies
Copying an x86 file into System32, or an x64 file into SysWOW64, can create additional loader errors. Windows Update, the Windows component store, SFC, DISM, and matching official installation media are the safe sources for this component.
FAQ
Is windows.system.profile.hardwareid.dll malware?
The genuine file is a Microsoft Windows system component. A copy should be treated as suspicious if it is outside the expected Windows directories, lacks a valid Microsoft signature, or was supplied by an unknown download.
Do I need to install Visual C++ or DirectX?
Not for this DLL specifically. It is a Windows Runtime component, not a Visual C++ Redistributable or DirectX file. Install another runtime only when the error explicitly names that runtime or the application’s official requirements identify it.
Should I copy the file from another PC?
No. Windows builds, servicing states, architectures, and dependencies may differ. Repair the installed Windows image with DISM and SFC.
Why does only one program report the error?
That usually points toward damaged application files, an incompatible application build, or a missing dependency. Repair or reinstall that application after repairing Windows.
What if the file is present but the error remains?
Check its Microsoft signature, run DISM and SFC, and identify the executable that requests it. The loader may actually be reporting a missing dependency. If the problem followed an update or driver installation, try System Restore.
