Vanilla Windrose has no usable in-game admin command system or server console in the documented Early Access build. You cannot rely on chat commands such as /kick, /ban, teleport, spawning, or a tilde console. Dedicated-server administration is performed through the hosting panel and JSON configuration files. Difficulty is chosen when a world is created and is locked in the normal in-game workflow for an existing save. A separate community mod, Windrose+, can add RCON commands, but its wp.* commands are not vanilla features.
What admin commands exist in Windrose?
Vanilla Windrose has no command console
At Early Access launch, PC Gamer reported that Windrose had no admin commands. RespawnHost described the July 2026 build in the same terms: no in-game commands, no server console, no RCON, and no in-game administrator login. That means a normal, unmodified server does not provide a command list that you can type into chat or a tilde console.

In practical terms, vanilla Windrose does not expose working commands for kicking or banning players, teleporting, spawning items or enemies, forcing a save, or restarting the process. A web page that presents a long list of such commands without identifying a specific mod or tool is probably describing a different game, an old experiment, or a community modification.

Administration is configuration-based rather than live-command-based. You change identity, access, and world options in the server files or in the control panel supplied by your host. Start, stop, restart, scheduled restart, backup, log viewing, and file editing are panel operations; they are not commands entered by players in game.

How dedicated-server administration works
The two JSON files
PC Gamer identifies two important files in a dedicated installation. ServerDescription.json is in the server’s R5 root. WorldDescription.json is inside the save or world directory. They serve different purposes, so edit the correct file for the job.

Names and exact JSON layout can change with an Early Access update or hosting provider. Preserve the existing structure and values when making a change; do not paste a configuration example from an unrelated version over the entire file.
Safe panel-and-file procedure
- Open your hosting panel and stop the Windrose server. RespawnHost specifically warns against editing configuration while the process is running.
- Create a backup of the world and the current JSON files. Keep the backup outside the active save directory if your panel offers a download option.
- Open the file manager or configuration editor. Use
ServerDescription.jsonfor access and identity changes, and the world’sWorldDescription.jsonfor world settings. - Change only the required value, retaining valid JSON syntax, quotation marks, commas, and the existing key names.
- Save the file, start or restart the server as required by the host, and wait for the process to finish loading.
- Join as a player and verify the result. Check the server name and access behavior for an identity change; check the world settings in play for a gameplay change.
Configuration changes take effect after a restart according to RespawnHost’s management guidance. If the server fails to start, stop it again, restore the backup, and inspect the panel logs before attempting a smaller edit.
Changing who can join
For password-protected access, use the password-protection flag and password in ServerDescription.json. The invite code is also an access-control tool. Changing that code is the practical way to invalidate the previous code, so former players using the old invitation can no longer connect with it. This is the vanilla alternative to a live ban command; it affects the invitation rather than targeting an individual account.
The same file contains the public server name and maximum player count. Those values identify the server and limit capacity, but they do not create an administrator role or add chat moderation commands.

How to change Windrose difficulty
Choose difficulty while creating a world
The supported player-facing route is the world-creation screen:
- Start Windrose and choose Create World.
- Open Select Difficulty before creating the save.
- Choose one of the four documented presets: Calm Waters, High Seas, Storm’s Edge, or Captain’s Choice.
- Review the resulting settings. The first three presets pre-fill the sliders; Captain’s Choice exposes direct editing of the available controls.
- Create the world only after the settings match the experience you want.
The Windrose Wiki describes High Seas as the intended baseline. That label is a design reference, not a promise that every group will find it equally difficult.

Can difficulty be changed on an existing save?
Not through the normal in-game workflow. Windrose Wiki states that settings are locked at world creation and that difficulty cannot be changed mid-save. If you need a different preset for an established world, the documented player-facing solution is to create a new world and select the desired difficulty before generation.
A dedicated host may expose file editing for a world description, but that is a controlled server-maintenance operation, not an in-game feature. Do not assume that changing a value in a live save will convert the world safely. Stop the server, back up the world, make one controlled change, restart, and verify; if the host or a version-specific guide does not explicitly support that workflow, use a new world instead.
Setting difficulty before a dedicated world is generated
If a dedicated server has not generated its world yet, configure the world description through the host’s file manager or configuration panel, then restart when the host requires it. Confirm which world directory the panel is using before editing. Once the save exists, the in-game lock still applies, and an unsupported file edit can produce an invalid or unexpectedly balanced world.

What the difficulty controls actually change
The presets are combinations of individual controls. These are the named multipliers and ranges documented by PC Gamer for the 2026 Early Access settings:

Combat and enemy behavior
Combat Difficulty is a separate Easy, Normal, or Hard choice. The Windrose Wiki describes it as governing boss-encounter difficulty and general enemy aggression. It is therefore broader than simply raising the enemy-damage multiplier.
Enemy Damage Modifier controls how hard enemies hit, while Enemy Health Modifier controls how much health they have. Lowering health can shorten fights without reducing incoming damage; lowering damage makes mistakes less punishing while leaving enemies durable. Adjust both deliberately rather than assuming one slider changes the other.
Ships and boarding
Enemy Ships Damage Modifier changes damage from hostile ships, and Enemy Ships Health Modifier changes their health. Boarding Difficulty is its own multiplier, so a crew can face tough boarding actions even when ship combat has been made less dangerous, or vice versa.
Co-op scaling
The two co-op correction settings are intended to compensate for additional players. The first addresses enemy health and posture; the second addresses ship health. Their defaults are not the same: enemy-stat correction is 1.0, while ship-stat correction is 0.0. If a group changes these values, record the original numbers in the backup so you can compare the multiplayer result and roll back cleanly.

Exploration and quest coordination
Difficulty is not the only world setup choice. Immersive exploration disables map markers for points of interest, making navigation depend more on discovery. Shared quest progress can automatically complete a co-op quest for players who already have that quest active. These options change how a group explores and coordinates objectives even when combat multipliers remain unchanged.

The available material does not assign individual multiplier values to each named preset. Use the in-game preview and slider values for the exact version you are running rather than inferring numbers from the preset name.

What Windrose+ adds
Windrose+ is a community server mod, not an official vanilla command system. Its documentation says that commands are executed through RCON and that console commands are not supported because HookProcessConsoleExec crashes Windrose dedicated servers. Installing the mod and configuring its authentication path are prerequisites; typing a wp.* command into an unmodified server will not work.
The mod uses the wp. prefix. Its documentation also describes authenticated REST/RCON endpoints, including POST /api/rcon. Your host must expose the mod’s RCON connection and credentials before a client can send commands.

These examples must be labelled Windrose+ whenever you document or share them. They are not substitutes for vanilla commands, and availability can change with the mod release and the Early Access game version. Start with wp.help after authentication rather than assuming a command from an old list still exists.

How to handle common administration goals without commands
Kick or ban a player
Vanilla Windrose has no documented /kick, /ban, or administrator-login command. For immediate access control, stop the server and change the invite code in ServerDescription.json; distribute the new code only to current players. Add or change the password and enable password protection when you need another barrier. This approach revokes the old invitation but does not provide per-player moderation records.
Restart, save, or inspect the server
Use the hosting panel for a restart, scheduled restart, backup, and log view. There is no vanilla chat command for these operations. Perform maintenance with the process stopped when editing files, then restart and check the logs before inviting players back.
Teleport or spawn items
No vanilla teleport or item-spawn command is documented for the Early Access build. Do not promise these capabilities to players unless a clearly identified, version-compatible community mod supplies them and the server owner has installed and authenticated that mod.

A command does nothing
- Confirm whether the server is vanilla. If it is, chat and tilde-console commands are not available.
- If the command begins with
wp., confirm Windrose+ is installed, running, and connected through RCON. - Check authentication and the endpoint configuration; the mod’s documented route includes
POST /api/rcon. - Run
wp.helpthrough the authenticated RCON channel to see what that mod build exposes.
A configuration edit did not take effect
- Stop the server before editing and restart it afterward; panel documentation says changes are applied after a restart.
- Verify that you edited the active
R5root or world directory, not an unused backup or a different generated save. - Check JSON syntax and panel logs. Restore the backup if the process will not start.
- Confirm that the setting is not one the in-game workflow locks after world creation.
The new difficulty feels wrong
- Check combat difficulty separately from enemy and ship multipliers; they affect different aspects of encounters.
- Review boarding and co-op correction values instead of changing only mob health.
- Remember that immersive exploration and shared quest progress alter group play even when combat numbers are unchanged.
- For an established save, create a new world when the required preset cannot be reached through a supported workflow.
A safe decision path
- Need a live command? Vanilla does not provide one. Use the hosting panel, or install and authenticate a compatible community mod.
- Need to restrict access? Change the invite code or password settings in
ServerDescription.json, with the server stopped. - Need a different difficulty? Select it during world creation. Treat an existing save as locked unless your host and version explicitly support a controlled file operation.
- Need custom tuning? Choose Captain’s Choice for a new world and adjust combat, health, damage, boarding, co-op, and exploration settings deliberately.
- Need RCON administration? Identify Windrose+ clearly, configure its authentication path, and use its
wp.*commands only through RCON.
The central limitation is straightforward: Windrose’s documented vanilla Early Access administration model is files and panel controls, not an in-game console. Plan backups and restarts around that model, and keep every community command clearly separated from the base game.
