The exact file-opening step depends on whether you play on Windows, Android, iPhone or iPad, Oculus Rift, or a console. The guide below covers each route, explains where Windows stores manual packs, and shows how to fix packs that fail to appear or do not change the game.

What a Bedrock resource pack is
A Bedrock resource pack changes the visual or audio assets used by Minecraft: textures, models, sounds, fonts, particles, and other presentation files. The normal distribution format is .mcpack. Microsoft defines an MC pack as “A zipped resource or behavior pack that modifies Minecraft: Bedrock Edition, typically used to transfer resources between users.”
A resource pack is different from a behavior pack. Resource packs replace or add assets; behavior packs alter gameplay logic. Some downloads contain both, and Minecraft may list them separately under the world’s Add-Ons settings. Install only files made for Minecraft: Bedrock Edition. A Java Edition pack, a mod, or a normal ZIP that lacks a valid Bedrock manifest will not import correctly.

Before you install
Check the file and edition
- Confirm that the download ends in
.mcpack. If your browser saved a ZIP, do not assume it is ready for Bedrock; the archive must contain a valid Bedrock pack structure andmanifest.json. - Use a pack made for your Minecraft Bedrock version. A pack created for another release can import but show missing textures, errors, or no visible changes.
- Keep the original download until you have confirmed that the pack works. If an import fails, you may need to download a clean copy.
- Only open files from a source you trust. A pack is an archive that Minecraft reads, so do not run unrelated executable files included beside it.
Protect existing worlds
Microsoft advises saving a copy of the minecraftWorlds folder before installing a new Minecraft build. Make a backup before testing unfamiliar packs as well, especially when a download includes a behavior pack or when you plan to edit an established world. A resource pack normally changes presentation, but a combined add-on can affect world content and should be tested on a copy first.
Install a downloaded .mcpack on Windows 10 or 11
Import the file
- Download the Bedrock-compatible
.mcpackfile. - Open File Explorer and go to the folder where the browser saved it, usually Downloads.
- Double-click the
.mcpackfile. Windows should launch Minecraft and pass the file to the game. - Wait for Minecraft to display an import notification. Do not close the game while the import is in progress.
If Minecraft does not open, right-click the file and choose Open with, then select Minecraft. If Minecraft is not offered, the file association may be missing or the download may have the wrong extension. Turn on View > Show > File name extensions in File Explorer and check that the name ends in exactly .mcpack, not .mcpack.zip or .mcpack.mcpack.
Activate it for a world
- In Minecraft, select Play.
- Choose Create New World to make a test world, or select the pencil icon beside an existing world to edit it.
- Open Settings, scroll to Add-Ons, and choose Resource Packs.
- Open My Packs, select the imported pack, and click Activate.
- Start the world and check the assets the pack is meant to replace.
The activation is attached to that world’s settings. If you want to test a second pack without changing a saved world, create a temporary world and activate the pack there.
Find the Windows pack folders
For the main Windows release, Microsoft documents the Bedrock com.mojang location as:

The finalized folders for manual content in that location include resource_packs, behavior_packs, and skin_packs. To reach the location, paste the path into File Explorer’s address bar. If you cannot see expected folders, enable Hidden items and File name extensions from File Explorer’s View menu. Windows installations can differ by release, so use the documented path for the main Windows Bedrock release rather than assuming that a Java Edition folder is the same place.

Install on Android
- Launch Minecraft once so the game is installed and ready to receive the pack.
- Download the
.mcpackfile. - Open the Android Settings app.
- Choose Storage > Explore.
- Open the folder containing the download, usually Download, and select the pack file.
- Android should hand the file to Minecraft, which displays an import notification.
- In Minecraft, open the world’s Settings > Add-Ons > Resource Packs > My Packs, select the pack, and activate it.
Android file-manager labels vary by device and Android version. The important part is to open the actual .mcpack through the operating system’s file browser, not to extract random files into a new folder. If selecting the file shows an app chooser, choose Minecraft. If Minecraft is not offered, verify the extension and confirm that the Bedrock app is installed.
Install on iPhone or iPad
- Tap the downloaded pack file from its web download, email attachment, or location in the Files app.
- When iOS or iPadOS asks which app should open it, choose Open in Minecraft.
- Wait for Minecraft’s import confirmation.
- Open the target world’s settings and go to Add-Ons > Resource Packs > My Packs.
- Select the imported pack and activate it before entering the world.
iOS and iPadOS may first save the attachment in Files or present a share sheet. If you do not see Minecraft immediately, use the share button and select Minecraft from the available apps. Do not rename the file to a different archive type; Minecraft needs the Bedrock pack file it can recognize.
Install in Oculus Rift mode
- Open Minecraft for Windows 10 in Rift Mode.
- Download the Bedrock-compatible
.mcpackfile. - Navigate to the downloaded file while in the Windows environment.
- Open the file and allow Minecraft to import it.
- After the import notification, activate it from the world’s Resource Packs settings.
The Rift route still uses the Windows Bedrock installation and its file-opening behavior. Importing in Rift Mode does not remove the separate activation step for a world.
Use a pack from Minecraft Marketplace
Minecraft Marketplace is Minecraft’s built-in source for Bedrock add-ons, skins, worlds, textures, and mash-up packs. Marketplace content is generally installed through the game’s own interface rather than by manually opening a downloaded .mcpack. Select the item in Marketplace, complete the in-game acquisition flow if required, and follow the prompts Minecraft presents for downloading or applying it.

The exact labels and commercial terms can change, so read the current item page and confirmation screens. Marketplace installation avoids many manual file-association and manifest problems, but it does not mean every pack is automatically enabled in every saved world. Check that world’s Add-Ons and Resource Packs settings after the content finishes downloading.
Use a Realm to get add-ons onto a console
Consoles generally do not provide the same direct file-opening route as Windows, Android, or iOS. Microsoft’s documented console method uses a Windows 10 or 11 Bedrock computer, a Realm subscription, and a world with the add-on already activated.
- On the Windows Bedrock computer, import the
.mcpackand activate the resource pack in the world’s Add-Ons settings. - Upload that prepared world to your Realm.
- On the console, open the add-on-enhanced world from the Realm.
This transfers the prepared world through the Realm rather than trying to copy a pack file directly onto a console. Keep the Windows copy and a backup of the world so you can restore it if you need to test a different pack.
Choose the right installation route

Troubleshoot a pack that does not appear
Confirm the import actually finished
Opening a file is not the same as activating it. First look for Minecraft’s import notification, then open a world’s Settings > Add-Ons > Resource Packs > My Packs. If the pack is absent from My Packs, the issue occurred during file handling or validation rather than during world activation.

Enable visible file extensions. A browser can append an extra extension when it saves an archive, producing names such as pack.mcpack.zip. Minecraft will not treat that as the normal MC pack format. Rename only an obviously duplicated extension; do not change an ordinary ZIP into an MC pack unless the pack creator supplied a valid Bedrock structure.

Validate manifest.json
A pack must contain a valid manifest.json. Check that its JSON braces and brackets balance, that the file is not empty or corrupted, and that the header UUID and module UUID are different. Invalid JSON or duplicate UUIDs can prevent the pack from appearing in Minecraft.
When editing JSON, preserve quotation marks, commas, and capitalization. A single missing brace can invalidate the entire file. If you did not create the pack, downloading a fresh copy is usually safer than attempting to repair unknown values.
Inspect the archive layout
The manifest and asset folders must be in the locations the Bedrock pack expects. A common packaging error is an extra top-level folder: the archive opens to PackName/manifest.json instead of placing manifest.json at the pack root. Correct the structure only if you understand the pack’s layout, then import the corrected file again.
Troubleshoot a pack that appears but changes nothing
Check the asset path and spelling
An imported pack can be valid while replacing no visible assets. Verify that the textures folder and any other required folders are in the expected locations and spelled exactly as the pack requires. Bedrock paths and filenames are not interchangeable: a folder with a near-match name will not replace the intended asset.
Use the vanilla asset filename
For a replacement to work, the pack normally needs the same filename as the vanilla asset it is replacing. If the pack contains a newly named image but no file path that Minecraft loads, importing it will not alter the corresponding block, item, or interface element.

Test a clean world
Activate the pack in a new test world and inspect an asset you know the pack changes. This separates a world-specific configuration problem from a faulty pack. If the change appears in the test world but not the original, review that original world’s active packs and pack order.
Fix conflicts caused by pack stacking
Bedrock loads packs in a stack. Microsoft describes this behavior as content being loaded on top of vanilla content, with an object that has the same name in both packs overwritten by the latest applied pack. In practical terms, two packs can contain the same texture filename, and the pack loaded later can hide the earlier pack’s version.
- Open the affected world’s Resource Packs list.
- Identify packs that modify the same category or asset.
- Move the pack whose files you want to see above the conflicting pack in the list.
- Reload the world and test the asset again.
Changing order is preferable to deleting a pack when you still need both. Some packs are not designed to coexist, however; if moving them does not resolve the conflict, test each one alone to identify the overlapping files.
Windows file and folder checks
- Use File Explorer’s Hidden items option when locating the documented
com.mojangdirectory. - Use File name extensions so duplicate or incorrect extensions are visible.
- Keep resource packs in
resource_packsand behavior packs inbehavior_packswhen working manually with the documented Bedrock folders. - Do not place a pack in a Java Edition resource-pack directory and expect Bedrock to detect it.
- After copying files manually, restart Minecraft before checking My Packs so the game can rescan its content.
A reliable installation checklist
- Confirm the download is intended for Bedrock and has a valid
.mcpackextension. - Back up the world, especially before adding a combined resource-and-behavior pack or changing a production world.
- Open the file with Minecraft using your platform’s normal file-opening flow.
- Wait for the import notification.
- Open the target world’s Settings > Add-Ons > Resource Packs > My Packs.
- Select the pack and activate it.
- Check pack order if another active pack changes the same assets.
- If it is missing, inspect the extension,
manifest.json, UUIDs, JSON syntax, and archive root. - If it imports without visible changes, verify asset folders, spelling, and vanilla filenames in a clean test world.
What successful installation looks like
A successful installation has three separate signs: Minecraft accepts the file and shows an import notification; the pack appears under the world’s My Packs list; and the pack’s intended assets visibly change after activation. If only the first sign occurs, the pack is imported but inactive. If the first two occur but the world looks unchanged, investigate paths, filenames, and stacking order rather than repeating the import.
